Cory Anderson1 OSU Presidential Fellow and Doctoral Candidate in Rural Sociology School of Environment and Natural Resources The Ohio State University Abstract: I define the plain Anabaptists by answering two essential questions: “Who are the plain Anabaptists” and “What are the plain Anabaptists?” In asking “Who are the plain Anabaptists?” I investigate several dimensions of identity. First, I trace the history of seven religious traditions within Anabaptism: the Swiss Brethren/Mennonites, the Low German/Russian Mennonites, the Hutterites, the Amish, the Brethren, the Apostolic Christian Churches, and the Bruderhof. Second, I explore three categories of people in each group—mainline, conservative, and Old Order—describing the last two as “plain.” Third, I explore scales and indices on which plainness is measured, as well as other measures of who the plain Anabaptist people are. In asking “What are the plain Anabaptists?” I define several ways social scientists conceptualize and describe the plain Anabaptists. I organize the sundry definitions and frames under three categories: the plain Anabaptists as a religious group, as an ethnicity, and as a social system. CLAY, M.S., June 2012, Journalism A Plain Circle: Imagining Amish and Mennonite Community Through the National Edition of The Budget) Director of Thesis: Bill Reader This thesis describes the ways in which one community newspaper attempts to connect a broad, diverse population bound by a common ideal, in this case religious faith. The subject of the research is the national edition of The Budget , a weekly newspaper mailed to Amish and Mennonite readers all over the world. Writers for the national edition are largely free to write about whatever they like. They pass along local information about the weather, church visits, people who have fallen ill, marriages, and other aspects of community life. This qualitative study of The Budget explores the portrayals of Anabaptist life in those dispatches and how those portrayals unite readers. Using textual analysis, it explores common themes, ideals, and values expressed in letters, and how those expressions help create an “imagined community” among Budget readers.

    Separation and Nonconformity Colloquy January 2013 Faith Builders Educational Programs Guys Mills, Pennsylvania Nonconformity in Anabaptist History A chronicler of the Hutterian Brethren has left us with the oldest known written account of the first adult baptism of the 16th century Anabaptist movement. After explaining how that after prayer Georg Blaurock “stood up and asked Conrad Grebel in the name of God to baptize him with true Christian baptism on his faith and recognition of the truth,” and telling how subsequently the others were baptized by George, the chronicler stated, “This was the beginning of separation from the world and its evil ways” (Hutterian Brethren 45). While this account was written some decades after the fact, it is noteworthy that the chronicler stated the significance of this watershed event in terms of separation from the world. Early Anabaptists grasped the concept of separation from the world readily. For them the world was not only unholy and unrighteous practices counter to the teaching of Scripture and the will of God, but also that union of state and church, now known as Christendom, which opposed and oppressed them. In their so-called “doctrine of two worlds” or “two-kingdom theology,” the state, with its sub-Christian duties and non-Christian conduct, was closely identified with the sphere of Satan (Stutzman 35, 36). Scripture depicts two, and only two, spiritual worlds which are in opposition one to the other and to which all mankind pertain. Separation and nonconformity have to do with how believers in the Lord Jesus Christ—those who have been freed from Satan’s world and brought into the kingdom of God (Eph.

(HE GREAT WAR had changed irrevocably the order of Tthings and delivered an uncertain future not only for Canada and the world but also for the Mennonite people. Canada s 58,800 Mennonites3 represented less than one per cent of that country's population, but about 1 1 per cent of the total Mennonite population around the world in 1921 (see Table 1). Canadian Mennonites nevertheless became the focus of an intense struggle for survival, both nationally and internationally, during the inter-war period.
