Kalendár Výročí 2018
Úvod Kultúra je od nepamäti súčasťou človeka. Pramení z tvorivého ducha jednotlivca, ktorý prostredníctvom svojho diela zušľachťuje seba a okolie. Vďaka kultúrnemu dedičstvu si spoločnosť uvedomuje, vytvára a obnovuje svoju identitu. Kalendár výročí nám pripomína aj výnimočne vysoký vek slovenských osobností: Gizela Veclová – 95 rokov, Danica Móžiová-Nováková – 90 rokov, Naďa Földváriová, Dagmar Rohová-Boksová, Zdenka Bernátová a Božena Ormisová – 85 rokov, Boris Banáry, Ľudovít Štassel – 95 rokov, Ladislav Dóša, Ján Kende a Pavol Zelenay – 90 rokov, Ladislav Déczi a Ivan Palovič – 80. rokov. Zo zahraničných umelcov oslávi 90 rokov Ennio Morricone, 85 rokov Montserrat Caballé a 80 rokov Jevgenij Nesterenko a ďalší. Významné výročia majú aj umelci, ktorí preslávili Slovensko vo svete: Lucia Popp, Marta Beňačková, Sergej Kopčák, Peter Lipa. Vďaka Kalendáru výročí 2018 nezabudneme ani na výnimočných ľudí, ktorí v tichu archívov a knižníc vytvárali pevné podložie pre prácu vedcov, pedagógov, umelcov: Mária Jana Terrayová, Vladimír Dvořák, Jozef Šátek. -

A Repertoire Guide to Composers Whose Anniversaries Fell in 2016
COMPOSER ANNIVERSARIES IN 2016 John Collins, Worthing Editor’s note: a shortened version of this article was published in British Clavichord Society Newsletter 64, February 2016. Copyright remains with the author, who is happy for excerpts to be used provided that the source is duly acknowledged. For permission to use the document in its entirety, please contact the author directly. There are several composers whose anniversaries can be commemorated in 2016, albeit some of the dates are not known for certain. Some of the composers listed here will need no introduction but there are also several less well-known names whose compositions are well worth exploring. I have omitted composers whose surviving pieces are clearly intended for organ only. No claim is made for completeness (some composers with only a very small number of surviving pieces have not been included), and there is no guarantee that every edition mentioned here is in print. There may well also be editions by other publishers, and it could be worth searching online booksellers for copies. Publishers’ catalogue numbers are given here where possible; websites are listed here. An increasing number of pieces, ranging from complete original publications or manuscripts (which present the usual problems of multiple clefs as well as original printers’ errors) to modern versions of complete or individual works, are to be found on various free- download sites, most notably IMSLP; however, the accuracy of some modern typesettings is highly questionable, and all should be treated with caution. Antonio de Cabezón (1510–66) was organist to the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V and one of the most important Spanish composers of the sixteenth century. -

We rely on sales and donations to continue publishing high-quality academic works. Daniel Chodowiecki’s allegorical copper plate of 1781 shows unauthorised reprinters and original publishers, respectively as highwaymen and their victims while the Goddess of Justice is asleep. The full title reads: ‘Works of Darkness. A Contribution to the History of the Book Trade in Germany. Presented Allegorically for the Benefit of and as a Warning to All Honest Booksellers.’ The identities of most of the characters have been identified: the bandit chief is the Austrian publisher Johann Thomas von Trattner (1717-1798) who made a fortune by reprinting books from other German- speaking territories. His victims are the publishers Friedrich Nicolai (in the centre), and Philipp Erasmus Reich (fleeing into the background). The small bat-like monster hovering overhead (a position normally reserved for angels in religious paintings!) is modelled on Gerhard van Swieten (1700-1772), an influential adviser and doctor of Maria Theresa of Austria who eased censorship regulations but encouraged the reprinting of foreign books in Austria. Nicolai’s right arm extends the bat monster’s line of gaze and points to the head of the Goddess Justitia, sleeping as if drugged by the poppy blossoms above her head. -

Studies in the History of the Cadence Caleb Michael Mutch Submitted In
Studies in the History of the Cadence Caleb Michael Mutch Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2015 1 © 2015 Caleb Michael Mutch All rights reserved 2 ABSTRACT Studies in the History of the Cadence Caleb Michael Mutch This dissertation traces the development of the concept of the cadence in the history of music theory. It proposes a division of the history of cadential theorizing into three periods, and elucidates these periods with four studies of particularly significant doctrines of musical closure. The first of these periods is the pre-history of the cadence, which lasted from the dawn of medieval music theory through the fifteenth century. During this time theorists such as John of Affligem (ca. 1100), whose writings are the subject of the first study, developed an analogy between music and the classical doctrine of punctuation to begin to describe how pieces and their constituent parts can conclude. The second period begins at the turn of the sixteenth century, with the innovative theory expounded by the authors of the Cologne school, which forms the subject of the second study. These authors identified the phenomenon of musical closure as an independent concept worthy of theoretical investigation, and established the first robustly polyphonic cadential doctrine to account for it. For the following three centuries theorists frequently made new contributions to the theorizing of the cadence in their writings, as exemplified by the remarkable taxonomy of cadences in the work of Johann Wolfgang Caspar Printz (1641-1717), the subject of the third study. -

KALENDÁR VÝROČÍ 2013 H U D B A Zostavila Mgr. -

BMC 27 - BAROQUE IN PRAGUE One may be forgiven for regarding Prague as being “outside” the normal range of Baroque musical centres, for its few composers are little known. The Czech region of Bohemia however was “just across the mountains” from southern Germany and so close that Prince Leopold of Anhalt-Cöthen, among his other travels, twice visited the Bohemian Spa town of Carlsbad, which had a reputation as the meeting place of the European aristocracy. Bach and some of the Court musicians (together with instruments, including an ingenious folding-harpsichord) accompanied him – a stimulating experience indeed for the young Bach. It is highly likely that it was on one of these visits that Bach met Bohemian Count Frantisek von Sporck for whom he would many years later, put together the Four Shorter Masses. The 1700s was a period of tremendous artistic activity in Bohemia and its capital, Prague. The wealth and power of ecclesiastical and aristocratic circles gave rise to the construction of magnificent seats of residence for religious orders, churches, palaces and castles for the nobility, with the accompanying need for statues, paintings, florid ornamentation and various products of artistic craftsmanship. The wide scale on which artistic projects were undertaken during a relatively short time-scale produced a homogeneous style in art and architecture. In the sphere of music, Černohorsky's school of counterpoint in Prague, which flourished in the busy atmosphere of the church choirs (1721-1731), set the tone for Czech composition in the latter 1700s. One noteworthy feature of 18th C. Bohemian music is that its development falls some twenty years behind Italy and Germany in terms of “musical fashion”. -
