ORIGINAL PAPER Abstract Based on an ethnographic study conducted from 2002‐2005 in Canada, this paper argues that the practice of Aikido within a specific community of practitioners does not simply exist as a medium for acquiring martial knowledge, but is also a viable conduit for acculturating or essentializing aspects of Japanese culture and identity. This is made possible in light of the highly embodied and corporeal dimension of Aikido practice, which requires one to develop the necessary dispositions and strategies for the construction of an Aikido habitus. Consequently, the path towards becoming an Aikidoka enables one to potentially embody, in similar but also unique ways, the cultural and moral worldviews that the art seeks to represent within intercultural and transnational spaces.     1 Contemporary women's roles through Hmong, Vietnamese, and American Eyes; Critical essay, Long, Lisa A. , Frontiers -A Journal of Women's Studies, January 1, 2008, 2008 University of Nebraska Press, Pg. 1(36) Vol. 29 No. 1 ISSN: 0160-9009 For many Americans, Southeast Asia and its inhabitants--particularly the Vietnamese and transnational ethnic groups such as the Hmong--become visible only through the lens of the Vietnam War. At the same time, contemporary Vietnamese tend to see that war as only one of the many imperialist conflicts in which they have been engaged for the past millennium. (1) And the Hmong, with traditional roots in agriculture and no national ties to speak of, hold an even longer view, seeing this war and subsequent migrations as part of an ancient four-thousand-year- old history of conflict and flight through the highlands of modern China, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand--and now to the United States. Not surprisingly, gender roles in Southeast Asia and the United States have been profoundly shaped in both cultures by these traditions of invasion, resistance, and, often, flight. A complex, diasporic confluence of political history, militarism, immigration, and feminism emerged in the wake of the Vietnam War. To tease out these delicate global intersections, which continue to shape contemporary women's lives, in this paper I explore representations of Viet and Hmong women in Vietnamese publications and public spaces and compare them to representations of women in the writings of Vietnamese American and Hmong American women. All main indexes on Vietnam's stock market increased on March 7. On HSX, the VN Index rose 0.25 points (0.03 per cent), the VN30-Index 1.29 points (0.20 per cent), the VNMid-Index 6.6 points (0.75 per cent), and the VNSml-Index 4.44 points (0.55 per cent). On HNX, the HNX-Index gained 0.15 points (0.17 per cent), the HNX30-Index 1.29 points (0.2 per cent), the UPCoM-Index 0.17 points (0.31 per cent), and the VNALL-Index 2.54 points (0.25 per cent). HSX saw a 131 point increase followed by a 112 point decrease while HNX saw a 124 point increase followed by a 113 point decrease. Liquidity on HSX reached VND3.3 trillion ($144.7 million), 6 per cent higher than yesterday, and on HNX was VND452 billion ($198.2 million), 4 per cent higher. The VN Index opened at 716.29 points and increased early on to its peak of the day of 716.9 points before hitting its bottom of the day of 714.4 points mid-session. It then recovered to finish the morning at 716.8 points. In the afternoon it fluctuated around the 716-point mark before finishing the day at 716.54 points. No food and beverage shares increased, with MSN and SBT closing at their opening price and BHN falling 3.4 per cent, SAB 0.9 per cent, KDC 0.8 per cent, and VNM 0.7 per cent.

E 2007 The National University of Singapore doi:10.1017/S0022463407000264 The emperor's new clothes: Re-fashioning ritual in the HueÃÂ Festival Oscar Salemink This essay focuses on the political dimensions of the Festival Hu¿, which is claimed to be significant as a celebration of the nation. Although socialist state rituals have lost their relevance in the ÕiMÛi era, the revival and re-invention of ritualised tradition create fertile ground for new ritualised events that legitimate and lend significance to the current regime. I argue that despite the unfamiliarity of many spectators with the symbolic contents of these new forms, they are effective because of their aesthetic resemblance to, and association with, familiar rituals. In the spring of 2000, 2002, 2004 and 2006, the city of Hu¿ in Vietnam organised biennial performing arts festivals under the name of `Festival Hu¿'. The concept of a modern, public-oriented, international performing arts festival following the model of those held at Avignon and Edinburgh is new to Vietnam. The Hu¿ Festivals are major cultural events and generally meet with great public acclaim and appreciation among the Vietnamese. The first such event was the result of close Franco-Vietnamese cooperation; in 2002 the Festival was greatly expanded to include artists and troupes not only from Vietnam and France, but from four ASEAN neighbours -Indonesia, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia) and three East Asian countries -China, Japan, South Korea). The Hu¿ Festivals represented the first attempts to host troupes from Vietnam and other countries performing for a mixed audience of local people and Vietnamese and foreign visitors.
