*Laws of Kiddush/Havdalla (Y.K.N.H.Z.) Because Yom Tov and Motzei Shabbos coincide, there is a unique format for kiddush. We begin with the regular opening paragraph of kiddush, 1) make the bracha on , 2) make the bracha of Yom Tov kiddush, 3) make the bracha on the havdalla candle, 4) make the havdalla bracha, (“Hamavdil,” but not the opening paragraph of “Hinei), 5) the bracha of Shechiyanu. This is called Y.K.N.H.Z., Yayin, Kiddush, Ner, Havdalla, Zman.

** The halacha declares that it is forbidden to prepare from the first day of Yom Tov to the next day, and therefore food for the second day needs to be prepared on that day itself. The problem arises when the second day is Shabbos, and cooking can't be done.

Hence, a rabbinical system was instituted called Eruv Tavshilin. The way it works is: Two cooked items are prepared before Yom Tov, a roll and, for example, a hard boiled eggs. After they are designated a bracha and a short text are said. You will typically find these at the beginning of the Machzor. After this is completed, the food items are put aside, and should be eaten on Shabbos. (If they aren’t eaten, it does NOT invalidate the process.)The idea behind this system is, that since we cooked something before Yom Tov to be eaten on Shabbos, the cooking done on the first day of Chag is just a continuation from what was started beforehand.

I know that this is not a well-known or popular law, but it is an important halacha to ensure the proper observance of Yom Tov. If a person forgets, under certain circumstances, they can rely on the fact that their did one for them. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out, 310 279 2645.
