As is still happening in the States, local radio stations are presenting Beatle discs almost non-stop. Final line-up of the touring pack- age for Australia is not fixed, but it is confirmed that Sounds Incorpor- ated, new signing by Brian Epstein, will make the trip. NEW LONG PLAYER From allcorners comes news of fresh sales records by the Beatles. In the States, "Meet the Beatles," the ALBUM,hassoldnearlyhalf -a - million more than the SINGLE "I Want To Hold Your Hand." A new album will be released in the next week orso.And "Can't Buy Me Love,"thelatestsingle,hassold 2,700,000 copies already. On Monday this week, BBC TV's "Panorama" was given over to Brian Epstein and his "stable." The brilli- ant young show -business boss was interviewed andfilmclipsofhis artistsand groups were included. Another slice of history was written . Also confirmed is a big television date for the Beatles themselves - a big " spectacular" to be directed by Jack Good, the producer who handled the earliest of big -beat presentations from the days of "Six -Five Special." Rediffusion TV put out the show on May 6, a Wednesday, and Cilia Black, Sounds Incorporated, plus American star Jerry Lee Lewis, are fixed for the bill.     CHAPTER TWELVE: OUTSIDERS’ MUSIC: PROGRESSIVE COUNTRY, REGGAE, SALSA, PUNK, FUNK, AND RAP, 1970s Chapter Outline I. The Outlaws: Progressive Country Music A. During the late 1960s and early 1970s, mainstream country music was dominated by: 1. the slick Nashville sound, 2. hardcore country (Merle Haggard), and 3. blends of country and pop promoted on AM radio. B. A new generation of country artists was embracing music and attitudes that grew out of the 1960s counterculture; this movement was called progressive country. 1. Inspired by honky-tonk and rockabilly mix of Bakersfield country music, singer-songwriters (Bob Dylan), and country rock (Gram Parsons) 2. Progressive country performers wrote songs that were more intellectual and liberal in outlook than their contemporaries’ songs. 3. Artists were more concerned with testing the limits of the country music tradition than with scoring hits. 4. The movement’s key artists included CHAPTER TWELVE: OUTSIDERS’ MUSIC: PROGRESSIVE COUNTRY, REGGAE, SALSA, PUNK, FUNK, AND RAP, 1970s a) Willie Nelson, b) Kris Kristopherson, c) Tom T. Hall, and d) Townes Van Zandt. 5. These artists were not polished singers by conventional standards, but they wrote distinctive, individualist songs and had compelling voices. 6. After Jack left, I inherited Crater's column and wrote it, with occasional contributions from Don and Jack Tynan, until I found that the well was running dry. Don and I wrote it some more and then Crater sort of passed from the scene, much like last year's favorite soloist. One other thing: I think Bill Crow will be delighted to learn that the picture of Billie Holiday he so admired on the cover of the Decca Billie Holiday memo• rial album was taken by Tony Scott. (Paul Laurence Dunbar)1 When Dunbar, the most celebrated African American poet of the Reconstruction era, published his terse commentary on the trauma of racism ‘We Wear the Mask’, he distilled an abiding facet of the relationship of black to white: whether slave or free, African Americans had been forced to perform a veneer of mirth veiling an inner self torn asunder. Indebted to and necessitated by artful deception and the tactics of trickery, this igurative disguise – manifest in expressive culture as well as the ‘myriad subtleties’ of vernacular language – is the mask of racial alterity. What Dunbar is implying is that black voices of both acquiescence and resistance were mediated by this process of masquerade. he meanings and histories of black music, in consequence, are complex and polysemous. Many explanations have been proposed to explain this tendency. This study critically examines these theories through historical and musicological analyses and concludes that the prevalence of the downbeat is a mixture of Jamaican folk and African-American popular music influences in its earliest incarnation, but was later deliberately emphasized in an attempt to create a unique new musical style.
