WOMEN’S BASKETBALL FALLS AT KANSAS WESLEYAN

SALINA, Kan. - The Southwestern College women’s basketball team was defeated on the road Wednesday night, falling to the by a score of 68-42 from inside Mabee Arena.

The defenses from both teams were on display in the opening quarter, with the Coyotes holding on to a slim 11-10 lead after ten minutes of action. Southwestern, who has struggled with turnover issues all season, took care of the ball well to start the contest, which helped result in three addi- tional shot attempts than the home team. Each team hit just four shots in the first quarter and turned the ball over four times.

The second quarter is where things broke open in favor of Kansas Wesleyan, winning the next ten minutes with a margin of 26-11 to lead 37-21 at the halftime break. In the second, the Lady Builders again were successful in holding onto the ball but withstood a strong shooting performance (9- 13) from the Coyotes that led to their scoring outburst. Southwestern went into intermission without the benefit of a free-throw attempt compared to Kansas Wesleyan’s 8-10 mark.

The third quarter was kinder to the Lady Builders offensively, shooting just under 50 percent from the floor to go along with a plus-three advantage in rebounding. Four additional miscues allowed KWU to put up six additional shots to again narrowly win the frame and prevent any sort of come- back effort. Southwestern was held to just seven points in the fourth quarter as Kansas Wesleyan earned the 68-42 victory.

Ashton Burdick (SR/Tulsa, Okla.) was the Lady Builders’ high scorer in the game, ending her night with 12 points and eight rebounds. Madyson Garcia (SR/San Antonio, Texas) and Lauren Richter (JR/Enid, Okla.) each finished with eight points, with Garcia finishing a perfect 3-3 from the field.

With the loss, Southwestern drops to 0-9 on the year and 0-7 in conference play. The team will return home on Saturday, January 16th to host the Friends Falcons. Tip is scheduled for 3:00 pm from inside Stewart Field House.
