The Vikings return two starters and 7 letterwinners from last year’s 28-win squad, a school record, that reached the national semifinals. Headlined by NSIC preseason player to watch Emily Schulte and 2012 second team All-NSIC guard Shaunteva Ashley, Augustana will look to be an even more up-tempo team than in the past while relying heavily on the pair of guards. Ashley is leading returning scorer for the Vikings this season, and looks to up her 10.5 points per game average from last year. Schulte finished the 2012-13 season with the third-most three-pointers made on the team with 46. Augustana opens the season up against Jamestown College on Nov. 16 at the Elmen Center.

BEMIDJI STATE - The women’s basketball team opens the 2013-14 season Nov. 12 hosting Mayville State University beginning at 7 p.m., then hits the road for Colorado to play University of Colorado-Coloraod Springs Nov. 15 and Western State University (Colo.) Nov. 16 at the UCCS Classic. BSU returns 10 student-athletes, which includes four starters from a season ago. The Bea- vers finished with 11 wins to increase their win total for the third consecutive season. BSU will be led by three seniors this season, Jessie Althoff (8.0 ppg, 4.0 rpg), Morgan Lee (13.8 ppg, 64 3-pointers) and Kate Warmack (11.3 ppg, 6.8 rpg, 52.8 FG%). The Beavers welcome eight newcomers to the mix this season. BSU participated in two exhibitions versus NCAA Division I competition before beginning the regular season. Lee and Warmack each scored 14 points in a 100-57 loss at South Dakota State University Oct. 27, while Althoff led the team in scoring with 16 in a 78-66 loss at University of North Dakota Nov. 5. Head coach Mike Curfman is in his ninth season and owns an overall record of 82-136 at Bemidji State.

CONCORDIA-ST. PAUL - Anika Whiting (F, 6’2”, Jr., Ashland, Wis. / Ashland HS) led the Golden Bears to a 2-1 finish in the CCA Tip-Off Classic in Anaheim, Calif. this weekend against strong competition. She averaged 14.0 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.0 blocks per game on 35.1% shooting and a perfect 15-15 from the free throw line. Whiting got her season off to a solid start as she scored 15+ points in two of the three games including her first double-double of the season against California State-East Bay on Friday with 15 points and 11 boards. Concordia (2-1) flew out to Anaheim, Calif. this weekend to take part in the CCA Tip-Off Classic. The Golden Bears got their regular season schedule under way on Friday afternoon with a 73-61 win over Cal State-East Bay. CU built a 20 point second half lead after a tight first half as they claimed their first win of the year. On Saturday, Concordia improved to 2-0 with a 68-62 win over Pittsburg State. The Golden Bears ran out to an early 15 point lead against PSU and held on for a six point win after a late run got the Gorillas back in it. #5 Emporia State handed Concordia their first loss of the season with a 72-51 win on Sunday. The Lady Hornets held CU to just 31.1% shooting and out-rebounded the Golden Bears 52-30.

UNIVERSITY OF MARY - #42 Brittney Dietz (F, So., 5-10, Beach, N.D., Beach) was sensational in her season debut for U-Mary. A reigning member of NSIC All-Freshmen Team, Dietz started her sophomore campaign right where she left off scoring a career-high 26 points. Dietz also corralled a career-high 10 rebounds for her first career double-double as she lead U-Mary to a 90-73 win its season-opener over South Dakota Mines. Dietz was 7-for-10 from the field and 3-for-4 from deep, in addition to recording two assists and one steal. With the score tied early in the game Dietz scored six points on a 9-0 Marauders run to put the Hardrockers in an early hole they were ultimately unable to dig themselves out of.

MINNESOTA, CROOKSTON - The University of Minnesota Crookston women’s basketball team has a busy first week ahead of them as they officially commence the 2013-14 season with a pair of games at home. The Golden Eagles will open up the regular-season Tues., Nov. 12 at 6 p.m. against Valley City State University. Friday, the Golden Eagle women’s basketball team will open up a triple header at Lysaker Gymnasium as they host William Penn University at 3 p.m.

MINNESOTA DULUTH - Seniors Hannah Rutten (C) and Megan Lueck (F) led the way for UMD as they downed Bethel University in an exhibition Saturday. Rutten finished with 18 points and and eight rebounds to lead UMD in both categories. Lueck had 16 points and was four-for-six from beyond the arch. The Bulldogs open their season at Missouri S&T on Nov. 15.

MINNESOTA STATE - The No. 23 Minnesota State women’s basketball began the season with a tough test as it battled hard against fellow top-25 opponent, No. 8 Central Missouri, on Saturday evening. The Mavericks fell by a final score of 96-88. The Mavericks got off to a bit of a slow start in the first half trailing for the majority by double-digits. MSU trailed by a score of 42-28 with 5:54 remaining in the first half before sparking a 17-6 run to close the gap to 48-45 at halftime. Junior guard Aubrey Davis (Bloomington, Minn.) led the way for the Mavericks in the first half with 11 points, while senior Karlee Gengenbacher (Quincy, Ill.) contributed 8 points. MSU held the edge in shooting, going 48% from the floor in the first half, while connecting on 4-8 from behind the arc. The Mavericks will return to the floor at home to face Buena Vista on Tuesday night at Taylor Center. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.

Zabel had 23 points, just one away from a career-high, and had 11 rebounds for the first double-double of her collegiate career. Zabel also added a game-high seven assists, just one away from a career- high, and two steals. Zabel was a perfect 11-of-11 from the free-throw line.

MINOT STATE - #40 Carly Boag (F, 6-2, Sr., Tamworth, Australia / Abbotsleigh) started the season off with her first double-double of the season, scoring a game-high 21 points while adding 11 rebounds in just 27 minutes as the Beavers blew out South Dakota Mines 75-49 Friday. Boag was 6 for 12 from the floor and hit 9 of 13 free throws in the win. She added five steals, three assists and two blocks to her scoring line. Minot State locked down South Dakota Mines to the tune of 25.5 percent shooting from the floor in a 75-49 season-opening win. Minot State trailed by seven points early in the first half, but gave up just seven field goals in each half. The Beavers welcomed back #50 Christina Boag (F, 6-2, F, Tamworth, Australia / Abbotsleigh) and #22 Katie Hardy (F, 6-0, Jr., Fairview, N.D. / Fairview), two mainstays who red shirted in 2012-13 due to injuries and both responded in their first games back since the end of the 2011-12 season. Boag scored 13 points and added four rebounds and four steals in just 18 minutes and Hardy finished with eight points and seven rebounds. #40 Carly Boag (F, 6-2, Sr., Tam- worth, Australia / Abbotsleigh) started the season off with her first double-double of the season, scoring a game-high 21 points while adding 11 rebounds, five steals, three assists and two blocks. The Beavers will be back at the Minot State Dome Wednesday and Sunday, taking on the Jamestown and Presentation College.

NORTHERN STATE - The Northern women open its regular season with a pair of road contests. The Wolves open Nov. 15 at South Dakota Tech at 7 p.m. and then will play Black Hills State at 6 p.m. Nov. 16. The Wolves are coached by Curt Fredrickson who enters his 35th season at Northern.

SIOUX FALLS - The USF women’s basketball team will open up the 2013-14 season with a home game against the College of St. Mary on Friday, November 15 at 7 p.m. The Flames qualified for the NAIA Division II Postseason Tournament during the 2012-13 season with a 25-9 record while competing in the MCAC and the NAIA. The Cougars will look to rely on a unique combination of experience and youth as they return 69% of their minutes from the 2012-13 season. USF also returns Laura Johnson (Sr., 6-0, Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls HS) who earned All-NSIC First Team honors during the 2012-13 season.

SMSU - SMSU will begin the 2013-14 regular season on Nov. 11 at home versus Crown College. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at the R/A Facility.

ST. CLOUD STATE - The St. Cloud State women’s basketball team traveled to St. Paul, Minn. on Wednesday evening to take on the (#5 ranked division III) University of St. Thomas in a 7:30 p.m. exhibition game. The Tommies jumped out to a quick ten-point lead to start the contest and never trailed, ultimately downing St. Cloud State 66-56. Jessica Benson (Grand Meadow) led all players in the game, scoring 20 points for the Huskies. Sam Price (Eau Claire, Wis.) knocked down three, three-point shots in the second half to finish with 13 points on the night. St. Cloud State University will start their official season schedule on Sunday, Nov. 17 as they host Valley City State University at 2 p.m. in Halenbeck Hall.

UPPER IOWA - The Peacocks will open the regular season on Monday, Nov. 11, in Kenosha, Wis. Upper Iowa will take on the Rangers of the University of Wisconsin-Parkside at 6 p.m. UIU will then return to Fayette for home games on Nov. 15 and 17 against Wartburg (7 p.m.) and Lewis (3 p.m.). The Peacocks will look to build on their 7-win season a year ago. Upper Iowa is led by All-NSIC First Team performer Whitney Kieffer and last year’s NSIC Freshman of the Year Carly Pagel. Head Coach Carol Russell enters her forth season at the helm of the Peacock program.

WAYNE STATE - Jordan Spencer (F, 5-11, Jr., Millard West HS) opened the season with 26 points in just 20 minutes of playing time to help the Wildcats cruise in a 105-41 win over Peru State College Saturday evening at Rice Auditorium. WINONA STATE - Abby Busch (F, Sr., Fairfax, Minn. (G-F-W) opened her senior season in style, recording the fifth double-double of her career. Busch scored 21 points while grabbing 12 rebounds to lead WSU to a 62-51 win over Saint Mary’s Sunday. Busch did most of her damage at the free throw line, going 13-of-15 from the charity stripe. She also handed out two assists, blocked a shot and recorded a steal. Fellow seniors Kelsey Andrist and Kate Hartman helped lead the Warrior charge, scoring 18 and 13 points respectively.
