Proposing a third term that operates beyond the dichotomy of high culture and mass culture and yet offers a fresh approach to both, these essays address a multitude of different topics that can all be classified as unpopular culture. From David Foster Wallace and Ernest Hemingway to Zane Grey, from Christian rock and country to clack cetal, from Steven Seagal to Genesis (Breyer) P-Orridge, from K-pop to The Real Housewives, from natural disasters to 9/11, from thesis hatements to professional sports, these essays find the unpopular across media and genres, and they analyze the politics and the aesthetics of an unpopular culture (and the unpopular in culture) that has not been duly recognized as such by the theories and methods of cultural studies. In a slum hut by the international airport, Abdul’s parents came to a decision with an uncharacteristic economy of words. The father, a sick man, would wait inside the trash-strewn, tin-roofed shack where the family of eleven resided.

  • The Red Album 4 the Editor's Letter
Volume 04 — Issue 02 Neighbourhood Life + Global Style Neighbourhood Seeing red Life Rosy cheeks Style Fireworks Music Ruby rockers Culture Brick city + The Fashion Special The red album 4 The editor's letter AVAILABLE AT BELLEROSE Publisher and editor-in-chief I don’t really like red as a colour. I find it aggressive, sometimes Nicholas Lewis even distasteful. It is loud and primitive and leaves nothing to the imagination. Be it in fashion, interiors or even urban architecture, red Editor is often nothing more than a faux pas, a wrong-footed attempt to make Randa Wazen a statement which often ends with squints and eyesores for all. Red is a colour that works well on paper, but somewhat falls short in practice. Design Red. It does sound nice on paper. As nice as the red-tinted stories, facetofacedesign features and interviews we have lined up for you in this edition. + pleaseletmedesign To begin with, there’s the piece we did on anger management, the Writers profile of snake-breeding hybrid hero Sebastien Rien as well as the Vincent Dechamps editorial nod given to slasher movies. There’s the feature on Brussels' Rozan Jongstra notorious devil den Le Bar Rouge, and the series capturing boxers Nicholas Lewis seconds after stepping off the ring. There’s also the explosive fashion Philippe Pourhashemi story, and the visual document on Flanders' standard-setting red brick Stijn Verlinden houses. Randa Wazen On the music front, we spoke with Eagles of Death Metal frontman Photographers/Illustrators Jesse Hughes, skyped London's Autokratz and Paris' My Sister Klaus 354 Photographers as well as gave a disposable camera to Belgium's Vermin Twins.

  • “The Stories Behind the Songs”
“The Stories Behind The Songs” John Henderson The Stories Behind The Songs A compilation of “inside stories” behind classic country hits and the artists associated with them John Debbie & John By John Henderson (Arrangement by Debbie Henderson) A fascinating and entertaining look at the life and recording efforts of some of country music’s most talented singers and songwriters 1 Author’s Note My background in country music started before I even reached grade school. I was four years old when my uncle, Jack Henderson, the program director of 50,000 watt KCUL-AM in Fort Worth/Dallas, came to visit my family in 1959. He brought me around one hundred and fifty 45 RPM records from his station (duplicate copies that they no longer needed) and a small record player that played only 45s (not albums). I played those records day and night, completely wore them out. From that point, I wanted to be a disc jockey. But instead of going for the usual “comedic” approach most DJs took, I tried to be more informative by dropping in tidbits of a song’s background, something that always fascinated me. Originally with my “Classic Country Music Stories” site on Facebook (which is still going strong), and now with this book, I can tell the whole story, something that time restraints on radio wouldn’t allow. I began deejaying as a career at the age of sixteen in 1971, most notably at Nashville’s WENO-AM and WKDA- AM, Lakeland, Florida’s WPCV-FM (past winner of the “Radio Station of the Year” award from the Country Music Association), and Springfield, Missouri’s KTTS AM & FM and KWTO-AM, but with syndication and automation which overwhelmed radio some twenty-five years ago, my final DJ position ended in 1992.

ABSTRACT Days Up and Down They Come: Townes Van Zandt and the Search for the Meaning of Life and Death Hunter H. Hewell Director: Prof. Robert Darden Texas has had a long standing tradition of excellent songwriting, and has been known to produce outstanding songwriters in each generation. Perhaps no time was filled with more prolific Texas songwriters than the late 1970’s in which artists such as Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings dominated the country music scene. However, no songwriter from that era is as highly regarded in folklore and legend as the portentous Townes Van Zandt. Despite a long struggle with alcohol and drugs, Van Zandt's songwriting abilities have been unrivaled in music. Each of his songs have a literary quality that allows them to tap into otherworldly truths. Through study of his life and music, I have attempted to find out what Van Zandt has to say about what it means to live and die, topics on which he frequently writes. The music of Van Zandt gives an interesting look on the meaning of life, death, and sorrow given from the perspective of a true artist and poet.
