DIET/HABITAT USE/VIVERRID/SAKAERAT ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH STATION The purposes of this study were to investigate the diet and habitat use of viverrids at Sakaerat Environmental Research Station, Nakhon Ratchasima province. Data on viverrids were obtained by live trapping, sign observations, camera trapping and scat collection along the roads and fire breaks from January to December 2008. Common palm civet (Paradoxurus hermaphroditus ), large Indian civet ( Viverra zibetha ) and small Indian civet ( Viverricula indica ) were encountered during study. Data from sign surveys were used to interpret habitat use. Scat was analyzed for food items and used to calculate seasonal diet. Viverrids used dry evergreen forest, random use in dry dipterocarp forest and avoidanced plantation and bamboo forest. Small mammals and fruits were the major diet of viverrids, especially yellow rajah rat ( Maxomys surifer ). The diets of viverrids varied among seasons, depended on abundance and availability of food items. The ecological niche is the position or role of an organism in its environment, defined by such factors as foods, predators, habitat, and temperature requirements (Brooker et al ., 2008). Each species occupies an ecological niche which is the set of resources it requires as well as its influence on the environment and other species. Niche parameters of different species may overlap and organisms may compete with other species for the resources they have in common. If two species are very similar, their niches will overlap resulting in competition (Wessells and Hopson, 1998). Species may reduced competition between each other by reduced the resource partitioning, behaviorial change, activity time changes, and morphological adaptations. Good examples of these phenomena can be found in carnivore communities (de Almeida Jácomo et al ., 2004). Carnivore communities often exhibit niche overlap because of the scarcity of major prey species, thus many carnivore families such as Ursidae (bears), Mephitidae (skunks), Herpestidae (mongooses), and Viverridae (civets, binturong, linsangs, and genets) are adapted for feeding on a variety

The global increase in urbanization has resulted in exclusion of many carnivore species from human- altered landscapes due to a variety of anthropogenic impacts. However, despite the negative impacts of urbanization on carnivores, certain species such as large-spotted genets (Genetta tigrina) exhibit an ability to persist within urban areas. Despite their extensive distribution range, large-spotted genets are poorly studied in comparison to other African carnivores, with a handful of studies conducted on genetics, activity patterns and diet. Furthermore, no studies have focused on their ecology in an urban environment. There have been increasing reports of large-spotted genets within urban areas throughout KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The mosaic of patches of native vegetation within this urban landscape provides habitats for a variety of wildlife species. The main aim of the study was to investigate the ecology of large-spotted genets within an urban landscape and to determine what factors facilitate their ability to persist in an urban environment. Residential interviews were conducted to ascertain information pertaining to behavioural observations, land use as well as wildlife conflict and public perceptions of genets. Chi-square (2) goodness-of-fit tests were used to determine significant differences in the frequency of responses.

    South Africa and Namibia, 20 July - 12 August 2017. VLADIMIR DINETS This trip was an introduction to Africa for my wife and daughter; the latter was two and a half years old at the time and enjoyed it a lot. We had three weeks to kill while a container with our stuff was traveling from New Jersey to our new home in Okinawa. We started from Cape Town, drove east to Hermanus and then north to Oranjemund, flew to Windhoek, briefly explored a few locations up to Etosha, returned to Windhoek and spent one day and two nights in Johannesburg. In 2017, Cape Town area, Namaqualand and Namibia were experiencing a major drought. Full moon was on August 7; that made finding small mammals difficult during the Namibian part of the trip. I had six Sherman traps and caught only twelve rodents of two species (two pygmy mice in the far south and Namaqua rock rats almost everywhere else). Bats seemed absent with few exceptions. I saw almost a hundred species, all but four of which I had seen before (see my 2008 trip report), and removed a few species from my “better view much desired” list. South Africa Simon’s Town is a convenient base for exploring the area; M4 south from it is a good place to look for chacma baboons, while humpback whales are often feeding offshore (we saw one, and heard a few while scuba diving). Watch for South African fur seals, too. Four-striped grass mice (locally called “field mice”) were abundant in wooded parts of penguin colonies.

    The 2008 IUCN red listings of the world’s small carnivores Jan SCHIPPER¹*, Michael HOFFMANN¹, J. W. DUCKWORTH² and James CONROY³ Abstract The global conservation status of all the world’s mammals was assessed for the 2008 IUCN Red List. Of the 165 species of small carni- vores recognised during the process, two are Extinct (EX), one is Critically Endangered (CR), ten are Endangered (EN), 22 Vulnerable (VU), ten Near Threatened (NT), 15 Data Deficient (DD) and 105 Least Concern. Thus, 22% of the species for which a category was assigned other than DD were assessed as threatened (i.e. CR, EN or VU), as against 25% for mammals as a whole. Among otters, seven (58%) of the 12 species for which a category was assigned were identified as threatened. This reflects their attachment to rivers and other waterbodies, and heavy trade-driven hunting.
