Kinney and Professor Jane Hwang Degenhardt The critical discussion of metatheatre has historically connected a series of reflexive dramatic strategies – like soliloquy, chorus, dumb show, the-play-within-the-play, prologue, and epilogue – and assumed that because these tropes all involve the play’s apparent awareness of its own theatrical nature they all have similar dramaturgical functions. This dissertation, by contrast, shows that the efficacy derived from metatheatrical moments that overtly reference theatrical production is better understood in the context of restaged non-theatrical cultural performances. Restaged moments of both theatrical and non-theatrical social ritual produce layers of performance that allow the play to create representational space capable of circumventing traditional power structures. The Reflexive Scaffold argues that this relationship between metatheatricality and restaged moments of culture is central to interrogating the complexities of dramatic genre on the English Renaissance stage. This project asserts that a great deal of early modern English drama begins to experiment with staged moments of cultural performance: social, cultural, and religious events, which have distinct ramifications and efficacy both for the audience and in the world of the play. However, while these restaged social rituals become focal points within a given narrative, their function is determined by the genre of the play in which they appear. A play or a feast inserted into a comic narrative creates a very different sort of efficacy within the world of the play from that which is created when the same moment appears in a tragic narrative. These various types of performance give us a glimpse into the ways that early modern English dramatists understood the relationship between their works and the audiences who viewed them. I argue that the presentation and reinterpretation of early modern social ritual is utilized by many of the major playwrights of the English Renaissance, including Shakespeare, Christopher Marlowe, Thomas Kyd, John Marston, Thomas Middleton, and Philip Massinger to redefine genre. Bottom A very good piece of work, I assure you and a merry. -Shakespeare, A Midsummer Night’s Dream Act I, Scene ii, Lines 9-11 Both Francis Beaumont’s The Knight of the Burning Pestle and Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream use the comic presentation of a play as a central element in their overall dramatic plots. Beaumont’s play stages an intruding audience that frames and shapes the play’s narrative and places one of its own members in a starring role, while Shakespeare’s ‘Rude Mechanicals’ serve as a low comic subplot through the preparation of their own play that they in turn present to the protagonists of the central romantic plot and which acts as a coda for the play as a whole. But what are the formal functions that these seemingly similar, but also clearly distinct, dramatic techniques fulfill? And, perhaps more importantly, how are we, as readers of early modern English drama, meant to understand and discuss those techniques? The standard answer to such questions in the current critical conversation has been to begin by labeling such techniques as ‘metatheatrical.’ The problem with this easy label is that, since the term’s coining by Lionel Abel in 1960, it has become a catch-all for reflexive dramaturgy with regard to both genre and technique. The term has become so ubiquitous that it can be applied to almost any play, early modern or otherwise. The existing critical discussion of ‘metatheatre’ connects a series of reflexive dramatic strategies – like soliloquy, chorus, dumb show, the play-within-the-play, prologue, and epilogue – and assumes that because 1 ! these tropes all involve the play’s apparent awareness of its own theatrical nature they all have similar dramaturgical

    Spring 1997 85 Melodrama and Metatheatre: Theatricality in the Nineteenth Century Theatre Katherine Newey Metatheatricality has always been an important feature of the English theatre.1 In the case of melodrama on the nineteenth century popular stage, the genre as a whole is strongly marked by a metatheatrical awareness, and the self- referential nature of melodrama is one of its key modes of communication. The highly coded conventions of melodrama performance, with its over-determined practices of characterisation, acting, and staging, constitute a self-referential sign system which exploits the playfulness and artfulness of the theatre to a high degree. Such artfulness assumes that the spectator understands and accepts these codes and conventions, not simply as theatrical ploys, but as an approach to theatrical representation which is deliberately self-conscious and self-reflexive. Clearly, these theatrical practices extend the significance of metatheatricality beyond just those plays which fit easily into the obvious metatheatrical categories such as the play within the play, the framed play, or the play about the theatrical profession.2 It is the argument of this essay that what is melodramatic is also metatheatrical; that metatheatricality in melodrama is a result of the extremity of expression in character and structure which is established by nineteenth century melodrama. Metatheatrical plays of the popular stage challenge the usual distinctions made between high and popular culture, both in the nineteenth century and now. Metatheatrical theatre has generally been seen as a part of high culture, not popular culture. Discussions of metatheatricality in nineteenth century popular theatre either express surprise at its 'modernity,'3 or dismiss its existence at all.4 The self-consciousness and self-reflexivity of theatre which refers to itself, to its making or performing, or to its dramatic and theatrical illusions, is regarded as essentially literary: complex, and aesthetically informed.

    Athens Journal of Philology - Volume 2, Issue 1 – Pages 9-20 Metatheatre in Aeschylus’ Oresteia By Robert Lewis Smith Lionel Abel coined the word ‗metatheatre‘ in his 1963 book, Metatheatre: A New View of Dramatic Form, claiming he had discovered a new type of theatre, and cited Shakespeare‘s Hamlet as the first metatheatrical play. Over the intervening decades, various scholars have pushed the incidence of the earliest metatheatrical play back beyond Hamlet. Richard Hornby, in his 1986 book, Drama, Metadrama, and Perception, found instances of metatheatrical elements in many plays before Shakespeare and likewise found it in the theatre of other cultures. Despite that, he did not accept classical drama as being ‗fully‘ metatheatrical. However, Hornby provided the fullest taxonomy of metatheatrical characteristics: ceremony within the play, literary and real-life reference, role playing within the role, play within the play, and self- reference. Since then, Old Comedy has been accepted as fully metatheatrical, primarily because of the inclusion of the parabasis. For many, Greek tragedies have not been accepted as fully metatheatrical. An earlier paper by the author advanced the claim that Euripides‘ Medea was a metatheatrical play. Now a point-by- point comparison with Hornby‘s metatheatre taxonomy and Aeschylus‘ Oresteia posits that the Oresteia is also a fully metatheatrical play. The conclusion is that each day‘s plays by the tragic playwrights at Athens‘s City Dionysia, particularly with the inclusion of the satyr play, makes those plays fully metatheatrical. Hence, we should accept that metatheatricalism is a characteristic of all drama, not just of plays from a particular period.

Current interpretations of the theater’s economic dimensions stress the correlation between acting and vagrant labor. I build on these approaches to argue that the theater’s connection to questions of labor was far more dynamic than is often thought. In particular, I argue that a full understanding of the relationship between the theater and labor requires that we take into account the theater’s guild origins. If theatricality was often associated with features of vagrant labor, especially cony-catching and rogue duplicity, the theater also drew significantly from medieval guild practices that valued labor as a social good and a creative force.

    1 2019 Seminar Abstracts: The King’s Men and Their Playwrights Meghan C. Andrews, Lycoming College James J. Marino, Cleveland State University “Astonishing Presence”: Writing for a Boy Actress of the King’s Men, c. 1610-1616 Roberta Barker, Dalhousie University Although scholarship has acknowledged the influence of leading actors such as Richard Burbage on the plays created for the King’s Men, less attention has been paid to the ways in which the gifts and limitations of individual boy actors may have affected the company’s playwrights. Thanks to the work of scholars such as David Kathman and Martin Wiggins, however, it is now more feasible than ever to identify the periods during which specific boys served their apprenticeships with the company and the plays in which they likely performed. Building on that scholarship, my paper will focus on the repertoire of Richard Robinson (c.1597-1648) during his reign as one of the King’s Men’s leading actors of female roles. Surviving evidence shows that Robinson played the Lady in Middleton’s Second Maiden’s Tragedy in 1611 and that he appeared in Jonson’s Catiline (1611) and Fletcher’s Bonduca (c.1612-14). Using a methodology first envisioned in 1699, when one of the interlocutors in James Wright’s Historia Histrionica dreamt of reconstructing the acting of pre-Civil War London by “gues[sing] at the action of the Men, by the Parts which we now read in the Old Plays” (3), I work from this evidence to suggest that Robinson excelled in the roles of nobly born, defiant tragic heroines: women of “astonishing presence,” as Helvetius says of the Lady in The Second Maiden’s Tragedy (2.1.74).

    Shifting Paradigms in Culture: "A Study of Three Plays by Jean Genet: The Maids, The Balcony, The Blacks" Department of English and Modern European Languages Jamia Millia Islamia New Delhi 2005 Payal Khanna The purpose of this dissertation is two fold. Firstly, it looks at the ways in which Genet's plays question the accepted social positions and point towards the need for a radical social change. Secondly, this dissertation also looks at Genet's understanding of theatre to underline the social contradictions through this medium. The thesis studies through a carefully worked out methodology the dynamic relationship between theatre and its viewers. This dissertation analyses the works of Genet to locate what have been identified in the argument as points of subversion. In this world of growing multiculturalism where terms like globalization have become a part of our daily life Genet's works are a case in point. Genet's plays are placed in a matrix that is positioned outside the margins of society from where they question the normative standards that govern social function. They create an alternative construct to interpret critically the normalizing tendency of society that actually glosses over the social contradictions. The thesis studies the features of both the constructs-that of society and the space outside it, and the relation that Genet's plays evolves between them. The propensity of a society that is divided both on the basis of class and gender is towards privileging groups that are powerful. Therefore the entire social rubric is structured in a way that takes into consideration the needs of such groups only.

The tribunes, Sicinius and Junius Brutus, were urban hustlers who confidently sported fashionable walking sticks, d la 1890s, when it seemed apparent that Marcius had lost his bid for power against them. In the final scene the envelope containing the terms for peace between Rome and the Volsces was refused and silently returned to the briefcase in which it was delivered. War would continue, as would the irrational forces that shape such conflicts, with or without proud and unresponsive leaders like Marcius. Peace is finally out of Marcius's hands, carried instead by the unseen and unspoken forces that have controlled people and events throughout history. Thad Taylor and Jay Uhley to perform the fifteen most noteworthy of the apocryphal plays is continuing, but they are being offered at a slower pace than had originally been intended. After a promising beginning (Sir Thomas More in 1984, then seven plays between July 1985 and March 19871), the Globe was confronted by the restrictions imposed by the new Actors' Equity Association rules. The Los Angeles Theatre Plan of October 1988 removed the equity waiver (a release permitting low-budget houses to function without paying directors, actors, and crews) under which small theatres such as the Globe had been operating.

Many of these attributions are external, such as the explicit references on the title pages of The London Prodigal (1605), A Yorkshire Tragedy (1608), 1 Sir John Oldcastle (1619), The Troublesome Raigne of King John (1622), The Birth of Merlin (1662), and (more ambiguously) the initials on the title pages of Locrine (1595), Thomas Lord Cromwell (1602), and The Puritan (1607). Others, including Edward III, Arden of Faversham, Sir Thomas More, and many more, have been attributed much later on the basis of internal evidence. The first collection of disputed plays under Shakespeare’s name is usually understood to be the second impression of the Third Folio in 1664, which “added seven Playes, never before Printed in Folio.”1 Yet there is some evidence of an interest in dubitanda before the Restoration. The case of the Pavier quar- tos, which included Oldcastle and Yorkshire Tragedy among authentic plays and variant quartos in 1619, has been amply discussed elsewhere as an early attempt to create a canon of texts that readers would have understood as “Shakespeare’s,” despite later critical division of these plays into categories of “authentic” and “spu- rious,” which was then supplanted by the canon presented in the 1623 Folio.2 I would like to attend, however, to a much more rarely examined early collection of plays—Mucedorus, Fair Em, and The Merry Devil of Edmonton, all included in C.

    Early Theatre 13.1 (2010) David Carnegie Running over the Stage: Webster and the Running Footman Although the frequent stage direction ‘passing over the stage’ has provoked much discussion as to its precise meaning,1 ‘running over the stage’ has attracted much less attention. Indeed, the famous Elizabethan theatrical clown Will Kemp achieved more fame by morris dancing than by running, though in his case heightened by being from London to Norwich.2 In early modern English drama there are, nevertheless, many kinds of running called for in stage directions. Alan Dessen and Leslie Thomson’s Dictionary of Stage Directions in English Drama, 1580–1642 lists roughly 260 examples under the headwords ‘running’, ‘hastily, in haste’, and others, divided into four categories.3 1. ‘enter/exit running/in haste’; this is the largest group, and includes examples such as ‘Enter in haste … a footman’ (Middleton, A Mad World My Masters 2.1.6.2–6.3), ‘Enter Bullithrumble, the shepherd, running in haste’ (? Greene, Selimus sc. 10; line 1877), ‘Enter Segasto running, and Amadine after him, being pursued with a bear’ (Anon., Mucedorus B1r), and presumably ‘Enter Juliet somewhat fast, and embraceth Romeo’ (Shake- speare, Romeo and Juliet 2.5.15.1). 2. ‘runs in/away/out/off ’; a typical example is ‘Lion roars. Thisbe … runs off’ (Shakespeare, A Midsummer Night’s Dream 5.1.253.1). 3. ‘runs at someone or is run through with a sword’; examples include ‘He draws his rapier, offers to run at Piero; but Maria holds his arm and stays him’ (Marston, Antonio’s Revenge 1.2 [Q 1.4].375–6), and ‘Flamineo runs Marcello through’ (Webster, The White Devil 5.2.14).
