Article & photos by Carolynn Boehmer (Gateway Indian Art Club) The Gateway Indian Art Club of St. Louis was founded in the early 1980’s by Todd Boehmer, Virgil Laux and Ben Thompson, three men who have been long time collectors and members of the Greater St Louis Archaeology Society. Although they started their collections with primarily stone tools, they had a great appreciation for the beauty of Indian Art which included pieces of bead work, quill work, pottery designs, basket designs, rugs and jewelry. They felt that an organization that focused on these pieces would benefit collectors and dealers in the St Louis area by connecting with others who recognized the artistry in each piece.

So join us for the St. Louis Indian Western Art Show & Sale on Saturday, November 4th from 10:00am to 5:00pm & Sunday, November 5th from 10:00am to 3:00pm. Admission is $5 & early admission is $25 at 9am Saturday. The show will take place at the Heart of St. Charles Banquet Center, 1410 South 5th Street (NE corner of I-70 & 5th St.), St. Charles, Missouri 63301.

The St. Louis area has a rich Indian heritage and there were many Indian Mounds within what is now the city of St. Louis when it was first being settled. We have a fabulous treasure nearby at Cahokia Mounds in Cahokia, IL and something we can be proud of. Additionally, the St Louis Art Museum houses the outstanding collection of St. Louisian, Donald Danforth, a long time collector of Indian artifacts.

The Gateway Indian Art Club of St. Louis has sponsored a major show every fall for more than 25 years which brings collectors and dealers to our area that shows the fine workmanship within the Indian Culture. Our show brings together collectors from all over the United States and is open to the public. It is our hope that when people see the beautiful items, it will form an interest in younger generations to perpetuate a strong interest in this unique culture and will carry into the future.

The answer is the ping-pong ball! new material worked to some extent, but it was still too unstable. It frequently caused small explo- sions when the billiard balls collided and the bil- liard balls would sometimes shatter because they had become too brittle. So back to the laboratory he went. In 1868 he found a solution to these problems. He found that when Camphor, which is a by-product of the Laurel tree, was added to the raw Cellulose it caused the problems to disappear. He filed for a patent in 1869, and he named his new product, Celluloid. This product was the first thermoplastic: a substance molded under heat and pressure that would retain One-Piece Thirties its shape when the heat and pressure were removed. He also won the $10,000 Hors D-oeuvres-Like prize. Buttons were not on the list of the many products that used Celluloid in their manufacturing processes in those early years. Combs, pins, umbrella han- dles, eyeglass frames, dentures, piano keys, photographic film, and billiard balls all preceded buttons. The use of Celluloid in button manufacturing did not start to appear until one or two decades later. The earliest buttons that used Celluloid used it as a Buffed clear sheet to protect lithographs and for background and trim. Ivoiroid Today, those earliest buttons that used Celluloid are called Bubble Glow Victorian Celluloid buttons. The first patent for the Celluloid tighttop button wasn't made until the year 1917. The tight-top Celluloid buttons were the most abundant type of Celluloid buttons made and thus, most Celluloid buttons are classified as Modern vs. Antique buttons. Celluloid buttons reached their peak in the late 1930's, but by the 1940's were being phased out and replaced by other plastic type material buttons. Carved Wafer Extruded 23
