Marketing Cornell Hospitality Quarterly 51(4) 459 –469 Hospitality Marketing: © The Author(s) 2010 Reprints and permission: sagepub.com/journalsPermissions.nav A Retrospective Analysis (1960-2010) DOI: 10.1177/1938965510376353 and Predictions (2010-2020) http://cqx.sagepub.com By Chekitan S. Dev, John D. Buschman, and John T. Bowen Abstract Looking at the evolution of marketing as recorded in the pages of the Cornell Hospitality Quarterly, one sees a continual increase in the complexity of the marketing issues for the hospitality industry. Each decade’s articles have been marked by an emphasis on a particular aspect of marketing, generally representing the leading edge of marketing research and thinking. The 1960s, for instance, was the decade of promotion, with numerous articles explaining how to respond to increased competition with an intentional marketing program. The 1970s saw the development of new lodging products and the beginnings of market research, with a greater focus on the customer and on continual product development. The explosion of brands and product tiers in the 1980s ushered in an era of brand management, and the decade also saw the initial lodging industry applications of revenue management, adapted from the airline industry. Following the brutal shakeout of the early 1990s, the lodging industry turned to customer satisfaction and loyalty as key elements of operations, with numerous articles examining ways to measure and manage customer satisfaction. The eruption of the internet dominated the first decade of the twenty-first century, as hospitality companies and guests alike sought to understand how to use this amazing tool. Going forward, the 2010s will continue the changes wrought by electronic media, most particularly the eclipse of printed media and the rise of social media.

When he was 5 years old, his mother passed away; his father died six months later, leaving Marion, along with his older brother James and younger brother Leon without parents. They spent a brief period at the nearby Leath Orphan Home. This move was precipitated by Howard just prior to his death, who could see that his health was failing fast, and wanted to make sure that his sons had a place to stay. The boys stayed in the home until 1913, when they came under the care of their aunt Kate. While attending school, Marion held a number of odd jobs beginning in 1914, earning 5 cents a day picking cotton after school. Later years saw him acquire employment in and around Memphis as a cotton picker and office boy, as well as positions with the William R.

  • Historic Resource Survey of Route 66 in Arizona
An Historic Resource Survey of ROUTE 66 IN ARIZONA An Historic Resource Survey of ROUTE 66 IN ARIZONA Prepared for: ARIZONA STATE HISTORIC PRESERVATION OFFICE 1300 W. Washington St. Phoenix, AZ 85007 By: MOTLEY DESIGN GROUP, LLC 1114 Grand Avenue Phoenix, AZ 85007 (602) 254‐5599 www.motleydesigngroup.com MDG Project # 11‐004 May, 2012 Introduction In recent years U.S. Route 66 has become a popular historical‐tourism destination for countless Americans and international travelers. This highway, which “runs from Chicago to L.A.,” has been singled out in the popular imagination as an icon representing American road culture and as a symbol of the freedom afforded by the automobile. In response to this high degree of public interest, in 1999 an act of Congress resulted in the Route 66 Corridor Preservation Program, administered by the National Park Service. Among other activities, the program provides grants to the affected states for the identification and prioritization of Route 66 related resources. In 2010, the Arizona State Historic Preservation Office was awarded such a grant, intended to fund a comprehensive survey of potential Route 66 resources in Arizona, from the California state line to the New Mexico state line. Motley Design Group, teamed with SWCA Environmental Consultants, was retained to perform the survey. The bulk of the field survey was completed in four trips occurring between April, 2011 and August, 2011. This report is a summary of the team’s findings.
