The Lakes Women’s Club Annual History Breakfast Saturday February 9, 2019 Keynote Address Thank you Nori Muster and Members of The Lakes Women’s Club My name is Joe Nucci and I am the Historic Preservation Officer for the city of Tempe. What is historic preservation? Preservation today has its roots in the environmental legislation of the 1960s. Demolition of Penn Station, one of the architectural jewels of New York City, in 1963 galvanized the preservation movement into action. Pennsylvania Station is named for the Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR), its builder and original tenant, and shares its name with several stations in other cities. The current facility is the substantially remodeled underground remnant of a much grander structure designed by McKim, Mead, and White and completed in 1910. The original Pennsylvania Station was considered a masterpiece of the Beaux- Arts style and one of the architectural jewels of New York City. Demolition of the original head house and train shed began in 1963. The Pennsylvania Plaza complex, including the fourth and current Madison Square Garden, was completed in 1968. Today, Historic Preservation is part of most formal land use planning activities at the Federal, State, and Local levels. Historic Preservation is place making through identification, evaluation, and conservation of components of the built environment that convey historic significance for the enjoyment and education of the community now and in the future.
