Pour l’occa- sion, nous présenterons plusieurs de ses films mar- quants, dont bien sûr ceux qu’elle a tournés avec Jean-Luc Godard, qui fut un temps son compagnon, dans les années 1960, comme Pierrot le fou, Le petit soldat, Alphaville, Une femme est une femme, pour n’en nom mer que quelques-uns. Le cycle sera émaillé d’autres titres qui ont marqué sa filmo gra- phie, comme La religieuse de Rivette ou L’œuvre au noir de Delvaux, dans lesquels on pourra appré cier la profondeur de son travail de comédienne. Nous com mençons cet hommage avec la pro jec tion de son dernier acte cinématographique : Victoria (2008), qu’elle avait choisi de réaliser au Québec et dans lequel elle jouait. La productrice Hejer Charf, le direc teur de la photographie Philippe Lavalette et le mon teur Mathieu Arsenault viendront témoigner de leurs sou ve nirs d’Anna Karina. D’abord associé à la con tre-culture et au cinéma de gau che fran çais des années 1970 (L’an 01, écrit avec Gébé, alors rédacteur en chef de Charlie Hebdo), il a obtenu la noto riété à tra­­vers une série de films que l’on a eu tôt fait de qualifier de post-Nouvelle Vague, au même titre que les réali sations de Jean Eustache ou Philippe Garrel. Obser vateur des mœurs qu’il étudie à la loupe (La drôlesse, La femme qui pleure), il est aussi un cinéaste au souf fle baroque qui s’exprime dans des films éton nants aux tona­­lités diverses, dont La pirate (avec Jane Birkin), La puritaine (avec Sandrine Bonnaire), ou tout der niè rement Rodin (avec Vincent Lindon). Il est aussi reconnu comme direc teur d’acteurs exceptionnel, LA FILLE PRODIGUE en par ti culier dans ses films où des enfants, des ado les- cents ou de jeunes adultes tiennent le haut de l’affiche (Le petit criminel, Le jeune Werther, Carrément à Jacques Doillon l’ouest, le remarquable Ponette). The increase in prostitution, literally speaking, is partial proof of this statement because it calls into question the body, but one can prostitute oneself just as equally with the mind, the spirit. I think it is a collective phenomenon, and perhaps one which is not altogether new. But what is new is that people find it normal.” – Godard (qtd. in Roud 34) Film criticism’s grasp is often limited by the enumeration of the characteristics of a director’s work, which wrongfully implies that each characteristic is a fairly autonomous and separate concern. One of the oft cited preoccupations in Godard’s cinema is prostitution as a social metaphor. However, his use of prostitution as a trope for the state of existence in modern society is closely related to another of these supposedly separate concerns: language.

When John F.Kennedy Jr. crashed into the sea just before the 30th anniversaries of the Apollo 11 landing and Woodstock blasting off, images of John-John flowed into a media stream of consciousness that was already obsessing on Stanley Kubrick (whose early movies revealed the shadows behind Camelot). The focus on Kubrick was occasioned by the release of his last picture, the sex-and-death extravaganza, Eyes Wide Shut. Apart from its content, EWS draws attention to the unlikelihood that 21st-century commercial moviemaking will accommodate radically 1960s- and 1970s-type individualism like Kubrick's, or the kind of trance picture his eerily premonitory farewell to the world has turned out to be. Lea Pool In the dawning era, controlled by brand-name franchises, cutie-pie mini-stars and hot Web sites, Quebec cinema is undergoing its own distinct transformation, one ripe with contradictions. Last winter, producer Roger Frappier yanked his releases out of the Genie pool and admonished "English" Canadians for ignoring Quebec films; however, like numerous other French-Canadian moviemakers, he decided to shoot potentially exportable English-language features. The new Quebec film award might be named the Jutra, for the revered late director, but the current movie scene is really defined by crowd-pleasers like Louis Saia (Les Boys I and II) and Christian Duguay (TV's Joan of Arc), rather than burgeoning artistes.
