Dr. Eslinger’s Word of Mouth

KOALAs & 2020 With all of the devastation in , my thoughts went to the poor wildlife that are in danger there. I decided to read up a bit on two amazing creatures and thought I would share. Often called the bear, these cuddly guys are not bears, they are , (or pouched ). In general are not In this Issue dangerous, and rescued koalas can even like to be held and . They average in size about 24 to 33” long and weigh up to 31 lbs Corner p.1 in the southern part of Australia. They are slightly smaller in the subtropical area to the North. Case of the month p.2 Female koalas give to single babies, after a gestation period of only 24 to 36 days. The CBCT of case p.3 Joey’s are about 2 centimeters long at birth, they are blind and furless with their ears not yet Random Acts of Kindness p.4 developed. The Joey lives in its mother’s for about 6 to 7 months, although you can sometimes see them peeking their little heads out around 5 months of age. After venturing

out of the pouch, the little Joey will ride on its mother’s back until its about a year old. They

will leave home between 1 and 3 years old and can live about 15 years in the wild.

What’s Fun in February The koala feeds very selectively on the leaves of certain eucalyptus trees. Their “home range” is usually about a dozen trees, although they usually do have a favorite. They actually don’t 7-Nat’l Wear Red Day drink much water, most of their moisture is provided from the eucalyptus leaves. They do eat 9-Nat’l Pizza Day a lot for their size – about two and a half to three pounds of leaves a day. They even store 14-Valentines Day snacks of leaves in pouches in their cheeks. Because their diet is relatively poor in nutrients, 17-Random Acts of Kindenss this provides the koala very little spare energy. This is why they spend long hours sleeping, 22-Eslinger Baby Due Date between 18-20 hours. 25-Paczki Day

28-Nat’l Tooth Fairy Day , meaning “big foot” in Latin, is the family that the

belongs to. Aside from the obvious features of kangaroos, they have

excellent hearing, eyesight and are good swimmers! A female kangaroo

is known as a “flyer” or “doe” and a male is a “buck” or “boomer”. (I prefer

to call them flyers and boomers) The is the largest and can

grow to over six feet tall and weigh up to 200 pounds. These guys can reach top speeds of over

40 mph. They can jump over 9’ high and 24’ long. You don’t want to make them mad!

These giants are very social and like to live in “mobs” of at least 3 or 4, and as many as 100.

Kangaroos enjoy eating grass, leaves, flowers and moss. They do need a water source to

survive, and during droughts, they are known to dig holes 3 feet deep in search of water. “The level of our success Kangaroos are tiny, like koalas, when born but only live in the pouch for 10 months. They

is limited only by our survive in the wild for 8-12 years. Both the koala & kangaroo are truly cute & amazing . imagination and no act of What’skindness, a kangaroos however small, is ever wasted” - Aesop

Case of the Month -

Searching for Two Needles in a Hay Stack

Sometimes, I wonder if there is a canal in some incredibly challenging teeth like the example below. We know that there is a canal in each root present, and sometimes, there are multiple canals. This patient arrived because her dentist attempted to perform the root canal but could only find one of the canals. Being the astute clinician, he knew there were at least 3 canals present but there was severe calcification present, which made it difficult to find the “holes” to ideally treat the tooth. The patient was informed that we will give it our best shot. After accessing the tooth, there were two white dots where the buccal canals should be located. It was a little like searching for two needles in a haystack. These white dots were aggressively attacked going through the severe calcification. Luckily, these were the canals, and we were able to get a good result for this patient.

The idea of random acts of kindness was started in 1982 when Anne Herbert wrote the words "practice "Remember there's no such thing as a small random acts of kindness and senseless acts of beauty" act of kindness. Every act creates a ripple on a place mat in a restaurant in Sausality, California. with no logical end." -Scott Adams A book about random acts of kindness was published in February 1993 and set off a chain reaction.

"Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see." -Mark Twain
