He entered the Foreign Service in 1 40, where he became a specialist in Middle East Affairs. His overseas posts include Halifa(, Baghdad, Tangier, New Delhi and Teheran, where he served as Minister,Counselor. In his several assignments in the Department of State in Washington, Mr. Wilkins dealt with Middle East matters. He also served on the Policy Planning Staff and as Inspector 0eneral of the Department. In 1 10 he was appointed Ambassador to Cyprus, where he served until 1 14. Ambassador Wilkins was interviewed by Peter Jessup in 1 88. 45 You were saying that 6 which raises a point which we might get to when we talk about Palestine 6 that a political appointee 7uite often has the ear of the President, or certainly the White House. That brings up the 7uestion of who spoke to the President last8 And in your e(perience on the Palestine business, and the recognition of the independence of Israel, wouldn9t you say that who spoke to the President last- - such as Clark Clifford, and so forth, with President Truman 6 that had a bigger impact than people who didn9t have that access8 WI8BINS: ThereGs a simple answer to that, and itGs yesH I will eEplain if you want me to. ItGs a rather long story. 45 We9re wandering around and I did have the opportunity to read some of your e(cellent work you did with the MacKenzie 6 of the Truman Library. After studying that it raised certain 7uestions. One of which is5 you were asked what could have been done that was different8 And your answer was that we could have been more closely in touch with the British, in the days before independence of Israel. WI8BINS: ,efore they referred it to the U.N. in 1941I 45 Yes. Could you amplify on that8 WI8BINS: Well, I would amplify this way. After the Anglo-American Committee Report. I only returned to the 0epartment in 0ecember 1942, when Secretary ,urns was in charge, and he left shortly thereafter. As I recall, he had not been on good relations with Prime Minister ,evin, in 8ondon. Ibis was all during that very active period, you know, when there were troubles Iran in 1942 J in A4erbaijan J and the ,ritish were facing difficult political and military situations in Greece and Turkey.

These relations evolved under conditions in which both countries understood and valued the need for cooperation, but also were aware of its limits and the dangers of too close a partnership. U.S. security dealings with Saudi Arabia are an extreme, perhaps unique, case of how security ties unfolded under conditions in which sensitivities to those ties were always a central —oftentimes dominating—consideration. This was especially true in the most delicate area of military assistance. Distinct patterns of behavior by the two countries emerged as a result, patterns that continue to this day. This dissertation examines the first twenty years of the U.S.-Saudi military assistance relationship. It seeks to identify the principal factors responsible for how and why the military assistance process evolved as it did, focusing on the objectives and constraints of both U.S.

Forsyth, Advisor This study examines the role of both the United States and Great Britain during a series of crises that plagued Cyprus from the mid 1950s until the 1974 invasion by Turkey that led to the takeover of approximately one-third of the island and its partition. Initially an ancient Greek colony, Cyprus was conquered by the Ottoman Empire in the late 16th century, which allowed the native peoples to take part in the island’s governance. But the idea of Cyprus’ reunification with the Greek mainland, known as enosis, remained a significant tenet to most Greek-Cypriots. The movement to make enosis a reality gained strength following the island’s occupation in 1878 by Great Britain. Cyprus was integrated into the British imperialist agenda until the end of the Second World War when American and Soviet hegemony supplanted European colonialism. Beginning in 1955, Cyprus became a battleground between British officials and terrorists of the pro-enosis EOKA group until 1959 when the independence of Cyprus was negotiated between Britain and the governments of Greece and Turkey. The United States remained largely absent during this period, but during the 1960s and 1970s came to play an increasingly assertive role whenever intercommunal fighting between the Greek and Turkish-Cypriot populations threatened to spill over into Greece and Turkey, and endanger the southeastern flank of NATO.

    JOURNAL OF SPORT HISTORY Jewish History and the Ideology of Modern Sport: Approaches and Interpretations by George Eisen CENTER FOR INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION CENTRAL CONNECTICUT STATE UNIVERSITY Where and how a society defines sport and the body reflects how its members define themselves. Coincidentally, sports in modern industrial and post-industrial societies have come to be parables tinctured with the issues and conflicts of race, ethnicity, and gender. Over the past century and a half, the advent and evolution of modern sport, and of course the Olympic movement, have been closely intertwined with Jewish history. Because they were rooted and molded simultaneously by predictable socio-cultural, psychological, and economic realities, these events also have greatly influenced and impacted each other. They evolved at a crucial junction in history. In the last decades of the nineteenth century, the socio-political emancipation, accelerated pace of industrialization, economic empowerment, rise of political and racial anti-Semitism, and the ascent of political Zionism coincided with the rise of modern sport and the formative years of the Olympic movement. This was also the time of a radical and irretrievable transformation of the Jewish community from a religious to an ethno-culturally based community. The question of how sport and Jewish intellectual thought, ethics, and tradition interacts with each other is an intriguingly complex one. Every religion contains a distinct ideology and value system that, according to Max Weber, exerts powerful influences upon social action. Judaism is no different. Yet, an interpretation of Jewish religious ethics and its influence on modern life is compounded by ethno-cultural dimensions that have developed as a consequence of cultural and social forces beyond the boundaries of the Jewish community.

Horowitz, Chair James Grehan Patricia Schechter Jonathan Seidel Portland State University 2015 Abstract The subject of Jews in sports is often times perceived as an oxymoronic research topic given the ethnic stereotypes that Jews are physically weak, unfit, and more focused on intellectual pursuits. However, Jews have had a long history and in- depth interaction with sports that is important to understand, not only to expand our perception of the Jewish people, but also to realize the important role sports play in social historiography.
