    Special Bulletin Remembering Mahatma Gandhi Dear Members and Well Wishers Let me convey, on behalf of the Council of the Asiatic Society, our greetings and good wishes to everybody on the eve of the ensuing festivals in different parts of the country. I take this opportunity to share with you the fact that as per the existing convention Ordinary Monthly Meeting of the members is not held for two months, namely October and November. Eventually, the Monthly Bulletin of the Society is also not published and circulated. But this year being the beginning of 150 years of Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the whole nation is up on its toes to celebrate the occasion in the most befitting manner. The Government of India has taken major initiatives to commemorate this eventful moment through its different ministries. As a consequence, the Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India, has followed it up with directives to various departments and institutions-attached, subordinate, all autonomous bodies including the Asiatic Society, under its control for taking up numerous academic programmes. The Asiatic Society being the oldest premier institution of learning in whole of this continent, which has already been declared as an Institution of National Importance since 1984 by an Act of the Parliament, Govt. of India, has committed itself to organise a number of programmes throughout the year. These programmes Include (i) holding of a National Seminar with leading academicians who have been engaged in the cultivation broadly on the life and activities (including the basic philosophical tenets) of Mahatma Gandhi, (ii) reprinting of a book entitled Studies in Gandhism (1940) written and published by late Professor Nirmal Kumar Bose (1901-1972), and (iii) organizing a series of monthly lectures for coming one year.

The entire KAOCA committee thanks the patrons who helped make this event a huge success. The event started at 4 pm with snacks, which included Masala Puri and Shira. The Entertainment program started at 5 pm and had a variety of programs including a couple of skits. The dinner followed at 8:15 pm and the menu included Valval, Ambe Upkari, Veg Kurma and Chicken Curry. The evening ended on a high note after the DJ music. It is time now for us – the 2010 KAOCA committee to move on and reflect back on the nostalgic journey which started late in 2009. On a personal note, when Sulatha and I were approached to head the committee for 2010, I was not very sure. However, my wife the charmer she is, talked me into it. “Yes we can” was her slogan and that triggered enough adrenaline rush in me to stand up and take the mantle. That is one side of the story. The other is the fabulous committee that made all of this happen.

    AHR Forum Transcending Identity: Gandhi, Nonviolence, and the Pursuit of a “Different” Freedom in Modern India MITHI MUKHERJEE IN THE PAST TWO DECADES, subaltern historians and postcolonial scholars have Downloaded from brought to our attention the need to question the generally assumed universality of Western categories in framing the histories of the rest of the world.1 The exclusive deployment of Western concepts to explain historical development in India and other non-Western countries, they say, not only has marginalized indigenous systems http://ahr.oxfordjournals.org/ of knowledge and practices, but has also resulted in the histories of these countries being presented in negative terms as a deviation from the universal trajectories of capital, democracy, and liberalism, which are themselves grounded in particular his- torical experiences of the West. Thus, as Dipesh Chakrabarty, among others, has argued, most scholars trained in this intellectual tradition have characterized India as “not modern” or “not bourgeois” or “not liberal.” The new intellectual sensitivity toward non-Western systems of thought has resulted in a significant number of works by guest on November 13, 2016 that deploy the critical category of difference. Yet none of the four major schools of historiography on modern India—Marxist, Cambridge, nationalist, and subaltern—has extended this notion of difference to the discourse of freedom associated with the Gandhian nonviolent resistance movement against British colonialism.
