Some of his orthodox countrymen, not satis· fied with meeting his arguments with arguments, went to the length of spreading calumnies against him regarding his cha· racter and integrity. These calumnies found their way into the works of som~ of his Indian biographers. Miss S, D. Collet has, however, very ably defended the charact~ of the Raja against these calumniet! in her work, "The Life and Letters of Raja Rammohun Roy." But recently documents in the archives of the Governments of Bengal and India as well as of the Calcutta High Court were laid under contribution to support some of these calumnies. These activities reached their climax when on the eve of the centenary celebration of the death of Raja Rammohun Roy on the 27th September, 1933, short extracts were published from the Bill of Complaint of a auit brought against him in the Supreme Court by his nephew Govindaprasad Roy to prove his alleged iniquities. -

Rajagopalachari 1 An Illustrious Life Great statesman and thinker, Rajagopalachari was born in Thorapalli in the then Salem district and was educated in Central College, Bangalore and Presidency College, Madras. Chakravarthi Rajagopalachari (10 December 1878 - 25 December 1972), informally called Rajaji or C.R., was an eminent lawyer, independence activist, politician, writer, statesman and leader of the Indian National Congress who served as the last Governor General of India. He served as the Chief Minister or Premier of the Madras Presidency, Governor of West Bengal, Minister for Home Affairs of the Indian Union and Chief Minister of Madras state. He was the founder of the Swatantra Party and the first recipient of India’s highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna. Rajaji vehemently opposed the usage of nuclear weapons and was a proponent of world peace and disarmament. He was also nicknamed the Mango of Salem. In 1900 he started a prosperous legal practise. He entered politics and was a member and later President of Salem municipality. He joined the Indian National Congress and participated in the agitations against the Rowlatt Act, the Non-cooperation Movement, the Vaikom Satyagraha and the Civil Disobedience Movement. In 1930, he led the Vedaranyam Salt Satyagraha in response to the Dandi March and courted imprisonment. In 1937, Rajaji was elected Chief Minister or Premier An Illustrious Life 3 of Madras Presidency and served till 1940, when he resigned due to Britain’s declaration of war against Germany. He advocated cooperation over Britain’s war effort and opposed the Quit India Movement. He favoured talks with Jinnah and the Muslim League and proposed what later came to be known as the “C. -

And yet it is a truly- important work destined to have a great educational effect. It is a history of India's peaceful- struggle for liberation under Gandhi's guidance. All that happened there came about in our time — under our very eyes. What makes the book into a most effective work of art is simply the choice and arrangement of the facts reported. It is the skill pf the born historian, in whose hands the various threads are held together and woven into a pattern from which a complete picture emerges. How is it that a young man is able to create such a mature work? The author gives us the explanation in an introduction: He considers it his bounden duty to serve a cause with all his ower and without flinching from any sacrifice, a cause v aich was clearly embodied in Gandhi's unique personality: to overcome, by means of the awakening of moral forces, the danger of self-destruction by which humanity is threatened through breath-taking technical developments. The threatening downfall is characterized by such terms as "depersonalization" regimentation “total war"; salvation by the words “personal responsibility together with non-violence and service to mankind in the spirit of Gandhi I believe the author to be perfectly right in his claim that each individual must come to a clear decision for himself in this important matter: There is no “middle ground ". -

Kautilya’s Arthashastra (324-296 BC) was a treatise on politics, statecraft and economics but also described the functioning of Indian society in detail. Megasthenes was the Greek ambassador to the court of Chandragupta Maurya from 324 BC to 300 BC. He also wrote a book on the structure and customs of Indian society. Al Biruni’s accounts of India are famous. He was a 1 Persian scholar who visited India and wrote a book about it in 1030 AD. Al Biruni wrote of Indian social and cultural life, with sections on religion, sciences, customs and manners of the Hindus. In the 17th century Bernier came from France to India and wrote a book on the life and times of the Mughal emperors Shah Jahan and Aurangzeb, their life and times. -

Reader may get glimpses of that period from the Preface of the first edition by Pyarelal Nayar and from the Foreward by C. Rajagopalachari. Due to the debate regarding constitutional provisions about reservation after six decades of independence students of Gandhian Thought have been searching the book which has been out of print since long. A publisher in Tamilnadu has asked for permission to translate the book in Tamil and for its publication. We welcomed the proposal and agreed to publish the Tamil version. Obviously the original book in English too will be in demand on publication of the Tamil version. Hence this reprint. We are sure, this publication will help our readers as a beacon light to reach out to the inner reaches of their conscience to find the right path in this world of conflicting claims. It uncovers a historical pattern of Bengali intellectual life that marked the period from the 1870stothe1920s, whereby an imperial imagination was transformed into an international one, as a generation of intellectuals born between 1885 and 1905 reinvented the political category of “youth”. Hermeneutics, as a philosophically informed study of how meaning is created through conversation, and grounded in this essay in the thought of Hans Georg Gadamer, helps to reveal this pattern. -

Gandhi was a great deal more than a nonviolent activist and political leader: he was a spiritual thinker, social reformer, critic of modernity and industrial civilization, interpreter of Indian civilization, a staunch supporter of Indian syncretism, a major figure in Indian journalism, and a forerunner, not only in India, of the many of the great social and ecological movements of our times. After the first three weeks, we will only partly follow the chronological framework within which the biographies of Gandhi have been constructed, and around which a great deal of the scholarship still revolves, and more so when we need to understand how Gandhi’s thoughts on a particular subject evolved over time. -

Gayatri Bhattacharyya INTERROGATING THE CIVILIZATIONAL APPROACH OF N. K. BOSE Nirmal Kumar Bose figures prominently in any discourse on the development of anthropology and sociology in India, serious or popular (Mukherjee, 1977 and 1979; Uberoi, et al., 2007; Nagla, 2008). Ramkrishna Mukherjee admires that Bose did not confine his attention to only one or two aspects of society or to any ‘fashionable’ approach, although he was gently influenced by the American ‘diffusionists’ and Malinowski (1979 : 69). Bose encouraged the younger generation of the 1950s to undertake a meticulous collection of field data, “albeit in micro situations and on the basis of a simplistic methodology”. He did not appear, to Mukherjee, a rigorous and systematic analyst so that “ultimately most of his studies leaned towards enlightened scientific journalism” (1979 : 69). In contrast to the above appraisal of Bose by Mukherjee, Surajit Sinha sought to bring into relief the extraordinary range of intellectual interests of Professor Bose and also how he brought an “original and penetrating mind” to the areas of enquiry of his choice. Bose transgressed the boundaries of specific disciplines and “the conventional divide between theoretical thinking and the application of knowledge”, between social sciences and humanities. He was in search of roots of the perennial “strength of Indian Civilisation” and the factors that constrained its creativity in modern times (Sinha, 1986 : Foreword). The approach adopted by Bose is termed “civilizational” approach (UGC NET syllabus 2000; Chaudhury, 2007; Nagla 2008; Bhattacharya, 2011). Surajit Sinha is viewed to have continued the tradition of Bose (Chaudhuri, 2007, Nagla, 2008). Chaudhury relies in his analysis a great deal on André Béteille who writes, “Fairly early in his career Bose recognised the enormous scale in both space and time of Hindu civilization to go beyond the approaches followed by the anthropologists in their studies of tribal communities.
