In summer 2018 it was recorded for the first time in Spain, from several sites in Catalonia (NE Iberian Peninsula). Here we give details on these first records and provide data on its biology, particularly of nesting and floral resources, mating behaviour and interactions with other species. Delaney2 & T’ai H. Roulston1 A potential driver of pollinator declines that has been hypothesized but seldom documented is the introduction of exotic pollinator species. International trade often involves movement of many insect pollinators, especially bees, beyond their natural range. For agricultural purposes or by inadvertent cargo shipment, bee species successfully establishing in new ranges could compete with native bees for food and nesting resources. In the Mid‑Atlantic United States, two Asian species of mason bee (Osmia taurus and O. cornifrons) have become recently established. Using pan‑trap records from the Mid‑Atlantic US, we examined catch abundance of two exotic and six native Osmia species over the span of ffteen years (2003–2017) to estimate abundance changes. All native species showed substantial annual declines, resulting in cumulative catch losses ranging 76–91% since 2003. Exotic species fared much better, with O. cornifrons stable and O. taurus increasing by 800% since 2003. We characterize the areas of niche overlap that may lead to competition between native and exotic species of Osmia, and we discuss how disease spillover and enemy release in this system may result in the patterns we document. International trade creates opportunities for plant and animal species to be intentionally or inadvertently intro- duced into novel ecosystems where they may interact with native species. One outcome of species introductions is the potential for competitive interactions with native species, especially those that are most closely related to the introduced species. -

E-mail: [email protected] Received: November 14, 2017; Revised received: December 20, 2017; Accepted: February 20, 2018 Abstract: A new species Megachile pseudodisjuncta of the bee is being reported from Genus Megachile and Subgenus Callomegachile. It bears a close resemblance to M. disjuncta from which it has been distinguished on the basis of certain morphological characters and genitalia. Megachilid bees bear utmost significance because they are very good pollinators of both cultivated and wild fauna. Consequently, their taxonomic identification and conserva- tion are very crucial. The detailed taxonomically important morphological characters of both the species were stud- ied and photographed. Male sternum and genitalia were studied microscopically and photographed. The material examined and floral associations have also been presented in the paper. A systematic analysis of the Melastomataceae, a pantropical family of about 4200- 4500 species in c. 166 genera, and their traditional allies, the Memecylaceae, with c. 430 species in six genera, suggests a phylogeny in which there are two major lineages in the Melastomataceae and a clearly distinct Memecylaceae. Melastomataceae have close affinities with Crypteroniaceae and Lythraceae, while Memecylaceae seem closer to Myrtaceae, all of which were considered as possible outgroups, but sister group relationships in this plexus could not be resolved. Based on an analysis of all morph- ological and anatomical characters useful for higher level grouping in the Melastoma- taceae and Memecylaceae a cladistic analysis of the evolutionary relationships of the tribes of the Melastomataceae was performed, employing part of the ingroup as outgroup. Using 7 of the 21 characters scored for all genera, the maximum parsimony program PAUP in an exhaustive search found four 8-step trees with a consistency index of 0.86. Because of the limited number of characters used and the uncertain monophyly of some of the tribes, however, all presented phylogenetic hypotheses are weak. A synapomorphy of the Memecylaceae is the presence of a dorsal terpenoid-producing connective gland, a synapomorphy of the Melastomataceae is the perfectly acrodro- mous leaf venation. Within the Melastomataceae, a basal monophyletic group consists of the Kibessioideae (Prernandra) characterized by fiber tracheids, radially and axially included phloem, and median-parietal placentation (placentas along the mid-veins of the locule walls). -

ABSTRACT Memecylon talbotianum Brand., an endemic plant of Western Ghats, was found in the Western Ghats regions of Karnataka. The plants were collected at Banajalaya of Sagara taluk and at Hidlumane falls of Hosanagara taluk, Shimoga district. The plant has been studied, identified, and its taxonomic position was assigned, the herbarium was prepared and preserved in the Department of Applied Botany, Kuvempu University. Simultaneously, the leaves of the plants were analyzed for their elemental components and nutritional values. Among the macronutrients, calcium was highest both in Banajalaya of Sagara and Hidlumane falls of Hosanagara, whereas phosphorous was minimum at Banajalaya of Sagar and sodium was minimum at Hidlumane falls of Hosanagara samples. The micronutrient value of iron was highest at both Hidlumane falls of Hosanagara and Banajalaya of Sagara samples and copper was lowest at Banajalaya of Sagara and zinc was lowest at Hidlumane falls of Hosanagara sample, respectively. The moisture was highest both at Banajalaya of Sagara and Hidlumane falls of Hosanagara samples, whereas ash value was low at Banajalaya of Sagara and crude fat was low at Hidlumane falls of Hosanagara sample among the different components of the nutritive values. -

Three years of pan trap collections from 16 sites yielded a rich assemblage of bees from vacant lots and urban farms, with 98 species documented. We collected a greater bee abundance from vacant lots, and the two forms of greenspace supported significantly different bee communities. Plant–pollinator networks constructed from floral visitation observations revealed that, while the average number of bees utilizing available resources, niche breadth, and niche overlap were similar, the composition of floral resources and common foragers varied by habitat type. Finally, we found that the proportion of impervious surface and number of greenspace patches in the surrounding landscape strongly influenced bee assemblages. At a local scale (100 m radius), patch isolation appeared to limit colonization of vacant lots and urban farms. However, at a larger landscape scale (1000 m radius), increasing urbanization resulted in a greater concentration of bees utilizing vacant lots and urban farms, illustrating that maintaining greenspaces provides important habitat, even within highly developed landscapes. -
