Lewis Department of Geography, Rhodes University, Grahamstown 6140, South Africa Tel: +27 46 6222416, Fax: +27 46 6361199 e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT Four major climato-environmental phases have been identified in the Eastern Cape, Plettenberg Bay-Knysna region and Little Karoo between somewhat before ~ 40 000 cal. a BP and the present: the Birnam Interstadial from before 40 000 cal. a BP until ~ 24 000 cal. a BP; the Bottelnek Stadial (apparently equating with the Last Glacial Maximum) from ~24 000 cal. a BP until before ~ 18 350 cal. a BP; the Aliwal North (apparently equating with the Late Glacial) from before ~ 18 350 cal. a BP until ~ 11 000 cal. a BP; the Dinorben (apparently equating with the Holocene) from ~ 11 000 cal. a BP until the present. Introduction 1.1. Purpose of this paper and use of proxy data The purpose of this paper is to summarise the evidence for, and describe the characteristics of, the major climato-environmental phases that have occurred in the Eastern Cape and adjacent Plettenberg Bay-Knysna region and Little Karoo during the last ~ 40 000 a (Fig. 1). The age of these phases has been established mainly by radiocarbon dating. Events predating ~ 40 000 cal. a BP are effectively beyond the range of radiocarbon dating and are not considered in this paper. -

Two eThembeni staff members inspected the borrow pits on 8 and 9 September 2008 and completed controlled-exclusive surface surveys of each. We identified no heritage resources within any of the proposed development areas. The landscape within which the borrow pits are located is one of extensive agriculture and conservation, dominated overwhelmingly by game and hunting farms. Scattered villages, towns and farmsteads are present and infrastructure is generally basic and limited to services that provide for local needs. All the borrow pits will be rehabilitated according to the standards of the Department of Minerals and Energy, to ensure that visual impacts on the landscape are minimized in the long term. We recommend that the development proceed with no further heritage mitigation and have submitted this report to the South African Heritage Resources Agency in fulfilment of the requirements of the Heritage Resources Act 1999. Scatec Solar works along three principle areas for all employees to focus on; delivering competitive renewable energy, contributing to local value creation and being a trusted business partner. Scatec Solar is committed to value creation and economic development in the communities close to the solar plants. Scatec Solar has identified the need for enterprise development in the above-mentioned towns. INTRODUCTION When the government of the Republic of South Africa in the early sixties decided to initiate a comprehensive water development scheme of its largest single water resource, the Orange River, this gave rise to a wide range of basic and applied scientific sur veys of that area. The reasons for these surveys were threefold: (1) The huge capital investment on such a water scheme can only be justified economically on a long term basis. Basic to this is that the waterworks be protected, over a long period of time, against inefficiency caused by for example silting. Therefore, management reports of the catchment area should.be produced. (2) In order to enable effective long term planning of the management and use of the natural resources in the area it is necessary to know the state of the local ecosystems before a major change is instituted. -

Phase 1 Palaeontological Impact Assessment of 2 Quarries and 6 Borrow Pits, between Willowvale and Dwesa, EC Province. Report prepared for: CCS Environmental Consultants. Dr Lloyd Rossouw PO Box 38806 Langenhovenpark 9330 Executive Summary A Phase 1 Palaeontological Impact Assessment was carried out at a two quarries and six borrow pit sites between Willowvale and Dwesa in the Eastern Cape. Quarry 1 and 2 are exclusively doleritic and therefore not palaeontologically significant. Borrow Pit 1 and 3 are located in Adelaide Subgroup strata, while an intrusive dolerite outcrop (dyke) and Adelaide Subgroup metasediments are represented at Borrow Pit 2. Borrow Pits 4, 5 and 6 are located in older Ecca Group strata. No fossils or trace fossils were located near or in the vicinity of the borrow pits during the baseline survey. The survey of exposed strata has indicated no evidence for potential palaeontological impact. There is no indication for the accumulation and preservation of intact fossil material within the Quaternary sediments (topsoils) covering the underlying sedimentary rocks. 2 Introduction At the request of Control Civil Services, a Palaeontological Impact Assessment was carried out along designated areas between Willowvale and Dwesa in the Eastern Cape with the aim to investigate six borrow pit localities and two quarries that will be utilized to maintain and rehabilitate the gravel road infrastructure in the region. The survey is required as a prerequisite for new development in terms of the National Environmental Management Act and is also called for in terms of the National Heritage Resources Act 25 of 1999. In terms of Section 38 of the National Heritage Resources Act 25 of 1999 the survey is required as a prerequisite for any development which will change the character of a site exceeding 5 000 m2 in extent.
