They relate how repre- 36 sentations of Afro-Cuban religion can occur in contexts where the order 37 of the binary is subverted by their performance. In this piece, I want 38 to use fieldwork done with practitioners of Santería to investigate how 39 vernacular discourses about gender, embodiment, and the past reorder 40 these very categories. In the same vein, I want to reread Lydia Cabrera’s 41 work Yemayá y Ochún: Kariocha, Iyalorichas y Olorichas in a queer man- 42 43 85 SP_OTE_Ch03_085-112.indd 85 7/9/13 5:14 PM 86 Solimar Otero 1 ner that will also open up these categories to broader interpretations.3 2 As Cabrera merges ethnography with fiction and reported speech within 3 a form of play that troubles the authorial voice, her writing is an invita- 4 tion to question how we think about what we know about Afro-Cuban 5 religious culture. -

Cuba: A Reading List “Before Night Falls” by Reinaldo Arenas Mr. Arenas was persecuted in Cuba for his writings and for being gay, and eventually fled to the United States. He committed suicide in New York in 1990, at 47. “Before Night Falls,” his autobiography, was later made into a film starring Javier Bardem. In The New York Times Book Review, Roberto González Echevarría wrote: “Anyone who feels the temptation to be lenient in judging Castro’s government should first read this passionate and beautifully written book.” “Dreaming in Cuban” by Cristina García Ms. García’s first novel tells the story of three generations of women in one family, and how staying in Cuba or fleeing the country affects their lives. Reviewing the book in The Times, Michiko Kakutani said that Ms. García had “produced a work that possesses both the intimacy of a Chekhov story and the hallucinatory magic of a novel by Gabriel García Márquez.” “Paradiso” by José Lezama Lima This novel by Mr. Lima, a major Cuban poet, is about a boy’s coming of age and his search for his dead father. Afrocentric Education: What does it mean to Toronto’s Black parents? by Patrick Radebe M.Ed., University of Toronto, 2005 B.A. (Hons.), University of Toronto, 2000 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE AND POSTDOCTORAL STUDIES (Educational Studies) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) October 2017 Patrick Radebe, 2017 Abstract The miseducation of Black students attending Toronto metropolitan secondary schools, as evinced by poor grades and high dropout rates among the highest in Canada, begs the question of whether responsibility for this phenomenon lies with a public school system informed by a Eurocentric ethos. Drawing on Afrocentric Theory, this critical qualitative study examines Black parents’ perceptions of the Toronto Africentric Alternative School and Afrocentric education. Snowball sampling and ethnographic interviews, i.e., semi-structured interviews, were used to generate data. A total of 12 Black parents, three men and nine women, were interviewed over a 5-month period and data analyzed. It was found that while a majority of the respondents supported the Toronto Africentric Alternative School and Afrocentric education, some were ambivalent and others viewed the school and the education it provides as divisive and unnecessary. The research findings show that the majority of the participants were enamored with Afrocentricity, believing it to be a positive influence on Black lives. While they supported TAAS and AE, the minority, on the other hand, opposed the school and its educational model. The findings also revealed a Black community, divided between a majority seeking to preserve whatever remained of (their) African identity and a determined minority that viewed assimilation to be in the best interests of Black students. -

Through her sixteenth-century conquests in the western hemisphere, Spain imposed history on the New World, and in effect she created the New World. Of course it is well to remember that there were two Old Worlds, indigenous and European, two different forms of hegemony, two displaced orders which would combine to produce a colonial mestizo culture, a mixed-blood culture born of the forcible cross between indi genous Aztec and Spanish civilizations . Mestizaje (miscegenation) is the central fact in the New World, a fact which calls up an inevitable chain: the Spanish conquest of the Americas recalls the Spanish reconquest of the Iberian peninsula and the resulting expUlsion of the Moors and the Jews. -

B. Brodey and Todd Ramón Ochoa) This dissertation is a critical analysis and annotated translation, from Spanish into English, of the book Reglas de Congo: Palo Monte Mayombe, by the Cuban anthropologist, artist, and writer Lydia Cabrera (1899-1991). Cabrera’s text is a hybrid ethnographic book of religion, slave narratives (oral history), and folklore (songs, poetry) that she devoted to a group of Afro-Cubans known as “los Congos de Cuba,” descendants of the Africans who were brought to the Caribbean island of Cuba during the trans-Atlantic Ocean African slave trade from the former Kongo Kingdom, which occupied the present-day southwestern part of Congo-Kinshasa, Congo-Brazzaville, Cabinda, and northern Angola. The Kongo Kingdom had formal contact with Christianity through the Kingdom of Portugal as early as the 1490s. -

COHEN ORISHA JOURNEYS: THE ROLE OF TRAVEL IN THE BIRTH OF YORÙBÁ-ATLANTIC RELIGIONS 1 Introduction 2 In recent years the array of Orisha 3 traditions associated withtheYorùbá- speaking peoples of West Africa has largely broken free of the category of “Afri- can traditional religion” and begun to gain recognition as a nascent world religion in its own right. While Orisha religions are today both trans-national and pan-eth- nic, they are nonetheless the historical precipitate of the actions and interactions of particular individuals. At their human epicenter are the hundreds of thousands of Yorùbá-speaking people who left their country during the first half of the 19th cen- tury in one of the most brutal processes of insertion into the world economy under- gone by any people anywhere; the Atlantic slave trade. While the journey of the Middle Passage is well known, other journeys under- taken freely by Africans during the period of the slave trade – in a variety of direc- tions, for a multiplicity of reasons, often at great expense, and sometimes at great personal risk – are less so. These voyages culminated in a veritable transmigration involving thousands of Yorùbá-speaking people and several points on both sides of 1 Paper presented at the 1999 meeting of the Société Internationale de la Sociologie des Religions. This article was originally prepared in 1999. Since then, an impressive amount of literature has been published on the subject, which only serves to strengthen our case. A great deal of new of theoretical work on the African Diaspora in terms of trans-national networks and mutual exchanges has not so much challenged our arguments as diminished their novelty. -

Theory in Action, Vol. 13, No. 3, July (© 2020) DOI:10.3798/tia.1937-0237.2039 Music and Literature in Alejo Carpentier’s Novel Baroque Concerto Rodica Grigore1 Even after his original theory concerning the marvellous real became famous, once his novel El reino de este mundo (The Kingdom of This World) was published in 1949, the Cuban writer Alejo Carpentier continued to be preoccupied with certain aspects concerning different problems of magical realist discourse, relating it to the aesthetic domain of music and painting. The novelist tries thus to prove that the Latin American identity is perfectly expressed by those works of art and by those exquisite artists capable to catch the true nature of “The New World”. Therefore, in his novel Concierto barroco (Baroque Concerto, 1974) he imagines a miraculous musical encounter bringing together composers and interpreters from different epochs and cultural spaces, in order to utter the ultimate truth about the individuality of a continent rather unknown to “The Old World” of Europe, but perfectly able to compete with its old values and artistic achievements. Exit Exam for Spanish Majors
“TUTORIAL FOR GRADUATING MAJORS” SPANISH 3500 This course prepares majors for the completion of their requirements in the B.A. in Spanish through advising by a designated professor. The course concludes with the Written Exit Exam, a 2-hour long comprehensive exam written in Spanish. 1 credit. Pass/Fail. The exam is made up of 3 parts: 1) Literature (40 minutes);2) Culture/Civilization (40 minutes); 3) Advanced Grammar/Phonetics (40 minutes). In literature and in civilization, the candidate receives 10 topics, to choose 6 of them, and to write a paragraph for each. In Advanced Grammar/Phonetics some choices also occur, according to specific instructions. Approximately one month prior to the Written Exit Exam (scheduled during final exams week), an oral mid-term exam occurs. Both the mid-term and the final exams are based on “The Topics Lists” (see attached), and the guidance given by the “designated professor”. A jury made up of three professors examines the candidate in both cases. If the candidate fails one of the 3 parts of the written exam, that part may be retaken within 7- 10 days of the initial exam IN the same semester. PART ONE: LITERATURA I. Haiti Unbound a Spiralist Challenge to the Postcolonial Canon H
HAITI UNBOUND A SPIRALIST CHALLENGE TO THE POSTCOLONIAL CANON H Both politically and in the fields of art and literature, Haiti has long been relegated to the margins of the so-called ‘New World’. Marked by exceptionalism, the voices of some of its AITI most important writers have consequently been muted by the geopolitical realities of the nation’s fraught history. In Haiti Unbound, Kaiama L. Glover offers a close look at the works of three such writers: the Haitian Spiralists Frankétienne, Jean-Claude Fignolé, and René Philoctète. While Spiralism has been acknowledged by scholars and regional writer- intellectuals alike as a crucial contribution to the French-speaking Caribbean literary tradition, the Spiralist ethic-aesthetic has not yet been given the sustained attention of a full-length U study. Glover’s book represents the first effort in any language to consider the works of the three Spiralist authors both individually and collectively, and so fills an astonishingly empty NBO place in the assessment of postcolonial Caribbean aesthetics. Touching on the role and destiny of Haiti in the Americas, Haiti Unbound engages with long- standing issues of imperialism and resistance culture in the transatlantic world. Glover’s timely project emphatically articulates Haiti’s regional and global centrality, combining vital ‘big picture’ reflections on the field of postcolonial studies with elegant analyses of the U philosophical perspective and creative practice of a distinctively Haitian literary phenomenon. Most importantly, perhaps, the book advocates for the inclusion of three largely unrecognized ND voices in the disturbingly fixed roster of writer-intellectuals who have thus far interested theorists of postcolonial (francophone) literature.
