A message from the Head of Ashton on Mersey Teaching School

It is both a privilege and a pleasure to be appointed to the role of Head of Teaching School. I am eager to embark upon the challenges the role presents and to lead the successful

changes we endeavour to make with the support of our partners. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support, as relationships are at the heart of our success. There are exciting times ahead in the Teaching School as we continue to Mimprovers K Baddeley standards and education outcomes for all of our pupils.

What is a Teaching School?

Teaching schools give outstanding schools the opportunity to work with others to provide training and professional development for teachers, support staff and headteachers, as well as contributing to the raising of standards through

school-to-school support. They are part of the government’s plan to give schools a central role in raising standards by developing a self-improving and sustainable school-led system. Teaching s chools work together within a teaching school alliance; a group of schools and other partners that is supported by the leadership of a teaching school.

Teaching schools are at the heart of improving the quality of education nationally.

Teaching schools provide school-to-school support As our Trust continues to grow it is important that where bespoke provision is sourced to improve we have effective communication between all school performance, through time-limited schools. The Dean Trust Specialist Network Partnerships

The Dean Trust Leads and the Teaching School have been instrumental in the set-up of the Dean Trust Specialist Network Partnership groups. The secondary schools met for the first time in Autumn 2015.

Each group has a nominated representative from each school who will meet on a termly basis for the following subjects: English, Maths, Science, Humanities, MFL, ICT, Business Studies, Technology, Social Sciences and SEN. Mr L McConaghie, Head of Broadoak School, will lead the Key Stage 3 and Teaching & Learning groups. Mr A Moloney , Head of Ashton on Mersey School, will lead Key Stage 4 and the Personal Development Behaviour & Welfare groups.

These meetings will ensure that the Trust utilises the tremendous amount of expertise we have across all of our schools. We must face challenges together, working collectively as a Trust, so that solutions will emerge by learning and sharing experiences with each other. This strategy will develop the Trust and each subject area by sharing best practice, ideas and networking.

Teaching & Learning (CPD)

Ashton on Mersey Teaching School is a Designated OLEVI Centre which means we are a lead school in the delivery and quality assurance of high quality professional programmes which will develop and improve teachers to deliver at least consistently good lessons.

We also work collaboratively with other Trafford Teaching Schools - Elmridge Primary

School , , Altrincham Grammar School for Girls and Trafford TSA so that our programmes provide a broader perspective for participants. Mr N Parry Director of Teaching & Learning In the last full academic year, 2014-15, Ashton on Mersey Teaching School has run 19 training programmes with over 220 teachers and teaching assistants taking part to gain valuable knowledge and experiences to take back into their classrooms. The teaching school has been assisting Lord Derby Academy to run their first ‘Outstanding Teaching Assistant Programme’, providing support to their local schools in and around the Knowsley area. They are now preparing for their second programme.

Outstanding Leaders Partnership

The Outstanding Leaders Partnership, led by Ashton on Mersey Teaching School and managed by Best Practice Network is licensed by the National College to provide NPQH, NPQSL and NPQML throughout the North West region.

The leadership curriculum offers the opportunity to study for a range of qualifications that provide national recognition of your leadership development and professional achievement. Closing date to apply for Senior Leaders and Middle Leaders (NPQSL & NPQML) was 29h January 2016. Maths Hub

As the Math Hub 2 lead school, Ashton on Mersey Teaching School has projects covering four broad areas: Raising Attainment, Improving the Workforce, Embedding Shanghai Practice and Increasing Post 16 participation. These projects include writing schemes of work that develop procedural fluency and deep conceptual understanding through a mastery approach, training ITT primary maths specialists, strengthening maths teaching and leadership, supporting teachers and pupils in further maths and modelling aspects of Chinese practice. Grammar School. This 4 half-day programme (over a 6 week period) will now become an established teaching school programme. The Summer term programme starts on 29th April 2016 following the launch of the first official programme at Lord Derby Academy supported by Ashton on M ersey Teaching School. Well done to the Maths Hub team for the successful pilots and bringing a new teaching school offer to our menu of programmes.

SCITT & School Direct

Ashton on Mersey Teaching School was accredited as an Initial Teacher Training provider in February 2014. In our first year as a SCITT (School Centred Initial Teacher

Training) we awarded QTS to 47 Primary with PE specialists and 8 Secondary PE teachers.

Currently within our SCITT we have:

Their time is split between the facilitated training sessions in our Teaching School and

with their placement schools to enable them to implement their learning and gain experience.

All of our PE trainees will be attending the Youth Sport Trust Conference in Coventry on the 3rd March which will focus on how PE and School Sport can help address the most significant issues facing schools and young people today.

We are building our network of 45 partner primary and 8 secondary schools who work in partnership to support the SCITT in areas such as placement schools, offering teachers as facilitators for the classroom based sessions, and helping with recruitment as a member of the interview panel. We have 9 primary and 15 secondary facilitators who provide a wealth of knowledge and expertise, enriching our ITT offer.
