Stuart Ayres Minister for Trade, Tourism and Major Events Minister for Sport Saturday, 24 October 2015 NSW OPEN GOLF SECURED FOR WESTERN SYDNEY Minister for Trade, Tourism and Major Events and Minister for Sport Stuart Ayres has announced the NSW Open Golf will call Western Sydney home for the next four years. This unique tournament will be played at the Stonecutters Ridge Golf Club in Colebee and will be a great precursor to the Australian Open of Golf in Sydney. “The NSW Open Golf will provide a great boost to the Western Sydney economy, with the 2015 event alone expected to contribute nearly $1.4 million in visitor expenditure,” Mr Ayres said. “Support from the NSW Government will allow the event to expand into Asia, developing strategic partnerships with Chinese golf associations and tournaments throughout the region.” The NSW Government is supporting the NSW Open through its tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW. Chairman Golf NSW Chris Allen said: “The NSW Golf Open has a rich heritage having first been played in 1931 with names like Greg Norman, Peter Thomson, Ian Baker-Finch, Jack Newton and Kel Nagle etched into the history books as past champions.” “Together with defending champion Anthony Brown and Australian triple crown winner Peter Lonard, the event promises to be one of the best for many years. “It is also important to thank Brian Thorburn, CEO Australia PGA and Stephen Pitt, CEO Golf Australia for their support of this event.” This announcement follows the agreement earlier this month that will see the Australian Open of Golf remain in Sydney for the next eight years. The 2015 NSW Open will run from 12-15 November, and is expected to attract amateur and professional golfers from countries including China, India, South Korea, Japan, Indonesia, the UK, Germany, Fiji and New Zealand. .

Trenham 1960 to 1969 1960 Al Besselink won the Section Championship and Skee Riegel won the Philadelphia Open. 1961 Gary Player won the Masters Tournament playing out of the Langhorne Country Club. 1962 Forty-four year old Henry Williams, Jr. won the Jamaica Open and Aronimink GC hosted the PGA Championship. 1963 The PGA Tour returned to the Section and played for the largest purse in the history of the PGA Tour. 1964 Art Wall won at San Diego, Al Besselink won the Azalea Open and Mike Souchak won at Houston and Memphis. 1965 Al Besselink won two Caracas Opens and Art Wall won his 4th Section Championship and the Maracaibo Open. 1966 Bert Yancey won at Wilmington, Memphis and Portland. 1967 Bob Ross won the Section Championship, the Pennsylvania Open and the DeBaufre Trophy. 1968 The Section rented office space. Leo Fraser elected PGA president. Bert Yancey 3rd in the Masters & U.S. Open 1969 Al Besselink won the Section Championship and the Prior Golf Festival. 1960 When the New Year began the Philadelphia Section had a new member on the PGA Tour. Jon Gustin was playing out of the Philadelphia Country Club. The Country Club’s professional Loma Frakes and two of the mem- bers backed him on the tour financially for four years. His ball striking abil- ity was legendary. He was one of the few players that Ben Hogan would pause to watch hit balls on the practice tee. While serving in the marines Gustin was in President Eisenhower’s Color Guard at the White House.

Indooroopilly Heritage Tournaments TOURNAMENTS Exhibition matches were organised by golf administrators to popularise the game in Australia during the 1930s through to the 1960s. Companies such as Slazengers also used matches to promote their golf equip- ment and showcase their contracted golf stars. Some of the major exhibitions played at Indooroopilly were - 1931 - exhibition match between American star, Walter Hagen and Joe Kirkwood. Hagen won eleven ma- jors in his career and an enthusiastic gallery of about 1,500 turned out to watch. Junior member, Budge Gill, caddied for Kirkwood. The gallery watch the Hagen and Kirkwood match. Indooroopilly Heritage Tournaments 1934 - exhibition between Joe Kirkwood and Gene Sarazan against club professional, Tom Southcombe and young star, Budge Gill. Sarazan won the US Masters at Augusta the following year. A young Budge Gill in trouble against Kirkwood and Sarazan. Indooroopilly Heritage Tournaments 1950 - exhibition between South African professional, Bobby Locke and Club Champion, Des Perkins against club professional, Ossie Walker and Budge Gill. Bobby Locke won four British Opens between 1949 and 1957. He is regarded as one of the finest putters the world of golf has ever known. Indooroopilly Heritage Tournaments Early 1950s - Ossie Walker played an exhibition match with American, Babe Didrickson, the greatest woman athlete of the time. She shot 71 from the back tees and consistently out-drove Ossie. 1958 – Exhibition between Gary Player and Norman von Nida versus Queensland Amateur Champion, Jack Coogan and Club Champion, Peter Davies. Gary Player won the first of his nine major titles the following year. 1963 - series of matches between ladies teams from Great Britain, Canada, New Zealand and Queensland as part of a round-robin exhibition organised by QLGU.
