REVIEW OF APPLIED ECONOMICS RAE Vol. 8, No. 1, (January-June 2012) THE DETERMINANTS OF ANNUAL EARNINGS FOR PGA PLAYERS UNDER THE NEW PGA’S FEDEX CUP SYSTEM Jonathan K Ohn*, William Bealing** and Dan Waeger*** Abstract: There have been numerous studies that examined the earnings determination of Major League Baseball (MLB) and National Football League (NFL) professional athletes, but relatively little attention has been paid to the earnings determination of professional golfers. The important difference between the two is: the earnings of MLB and NFL athletes are determined by past and expected future performance, while the earnings of professional golfers depend strictly on their current performance. In this paper, we reexamine the structure and determination of the PGA golfers’ tour earnings in the new era, which started with the introduction of the FedEx Cup Championship in 2007. We use two determination models – the first with a set of traditional skill variables, and the second with the skill variables along with two additional variables which reflect the monetary and psychological effect of a player’s timely performance at the majors, and the measure of a player’s consistency and persistency throughout the regular season. Overall, the second model appears to be a superior model, explaining the earnings determination of PGA players better. JEL classifications: J3; J7; M5 Keywords: Determination of Professional Golfers’ Earnings; Performance Variables; Earnings- Efficiency 1. INTRODUCTION Much attention has been paid to the study on the performance and earnings structure of professional sports players, especially in Major League Baseball (MLB) and National Football Leagues (NFL). However, relatively little attempt has been made to study the earnings structure of professional golfers.

British Golfer, Lee Westwood wins the exciting night golf contest ‘Hero Challenge’ at the British Masters 2017 Newcastle, UK, September 27, 2017: English Golfer and the host of British Masters 2017, Lee Westwood clinched the winner’s title in the thrilling one-hole knockout contest – The Hero Challenge – ahead of the British Masters 2017. The Hero Challenge was staged under lights at a specially constructed Par-3 on the 18th hole at the stunning Close House golf course. Making a great debut at the Hero Challenge amidst a packed house of over 4000 fans, Westwood defeated Spanish Golfer, Sergio Garcia in a shoot-out in the final, after eliminating Britain’s Ross Fisher and Austria’s Bernd Wiesberger in a similar fashion in earlier rounds. Mr. Pawan Munjal, Chairman, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Hero MotoCorp Ltd, presented the winner’s trophy to Westwood. A key partner of the European Tour, Hero MotoCorp introduced the innovative ‘Hero Challenge’ at the British Masters in 2016. Encouraged by the massive success and support garnered in the first edition, Hero MotoCorp has extended the partnership with European Tour by another three years. This season, the Hero Challenge received a phenomenal response at the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open 2017, before making a splendid comeback at the prestigious British Masters. The third Hero Challenge, and the fourth overall, will be held in Dubai at the DP World Tour Championships in November. Commenting on the occasion, Westwood said, “It’s a great way to kick off the tournament. It’s different and I really enjoyed it.

West Virginia Open History Compiled by Bob Baker 1933: Johnny Javins, the pro at Edgewood Country Club in Charleston, defeated pro I. C. ""Rocky''' Schorr of Bluefield Country Club in an 18-hole playoff at Kanawha Country Club in South Charleston to win the first West Virginia Open. Javins shot a 76 in the playoff while Schorr had an 82. They agreed to split first and second place money but Javins got the trophy donated by George C. Weimer of St. Albans. Javins and Schorr had tied after 72 holes of medal play with 302 scores. Schorr held a five-stroke lead over the field and an 11-stroke edge over Javins after two rounds but faltered on the second 36-hole day. Schorr's troubles started when he took a nine on the par-four third hole, needing five strokes to get out of a trap. Javins began his comeback with a 69 in the third round to pick up all 11 strokes on Schorr. The West Virginia Professional Golfers Association was formed in a meeting a month before the tournament, with Schorr the first president. • When You Think of Great Golf Destinations in the United States, San Diego Isn’T on the List, but It Should Be As the City Has It All
or a couple of years I’ve wanted to visit ‘America’s Finest City’ (according to Wikipedia), not because of the genius of Will Ferrell and his character Ron Burgundy in the movie Anchorman. That helped, but the urge came more from a conversation I had with Geoff Ogilvy, who said, “For a combination of golf and lifestyle, something for all the family to do, there’s nowhere like San Diego.” Ogilvy should know, he made it his home, and it’s also the birthplace of Hall of Famer Phil Mickelson. So much about San Diego feels like Sydney. It’s got a great climate, beautiful harbour and beaches plus a world-famous zoo. Tick, tick and tick, and the gum trees were transplanted from the Australian bush. I was there the week after Mickelson won the Open Championship and he was back in town sharing the Claret Jug with family and friends. Despite visiting the Callaway Performance Centre plus two of the golf clubs he plays at, we kept just missing “the Champion Golfer of the Year” by a day or two, but that’s as bad as our luck got, the rest was brilliant. WHEN YOU THINK OF GREAT GOLF DESTINATIONS IN THE UNITED STATES, SAN DIEGO ISN’T ON THE LIST, BUT IT SHOULD BE AS THE CITY HAS IT ALL. THE WEATHER IS NEAR-PERFECT, ITS TOPOGRAPHY IS IDEAL AND THERE’S AN ABUNDANCE OF QUALITY COURSES.
