  • Bert Button Comments on Radio – 1985
BERT BUTTON COMMENTS ON RADIO – 1985 Willie Fennell: actor of radio, films, theatre. In the post war years over 60% of radio features were imported from America and the United Kingdom. A Parliamentary Standing Committee on Broadcasting was concerned about Australian artists only participating in about 30% of locally recorded programs. It was about that time that the “Colgate Palmolive Show” was formed, which included Jack Davey, Bob Dyer, Roy Rene, Joy Nicholls, Kitty Bluett, Hal Lashwood, Dick Bentley, George Foster and Willie Fennell. Willie’s main claim to popularity was the expression “Ow are yer mate” and it could be claimed that his being typed this way did not do justice to the real ability he possessed. Perhaps the first public indication of this was when he starred in “Life with Dexter” and since then he has successfully participated in a number of TV and theatrical productions. Willie was always a fairly quiet unassuming person; not easily cultivated as a friend, but an individual who would always leave his mark in the field of entertainment. Whilst he recollects with pleasure his participation in several top rating radio shows such as “Calling The Stars” (his first appearance in radio), “Ada and Elsie”, and “The Cashmere Bouquet Show”, I’ve always felt that Willie Fennell obtained more satisfaction from his association with theatrical and film productions, although he also obviously enjoyed facing up to large audiences in club shows. Now in his sixties, Willie Fennell has been associated with several commercial and ABC TV programs such as “No. 96” and “Young Doctors”, and also stars in theatrical productions and the occasional film.

  • On Falson, One of Australia's Foremost Jazz Music
OBITUARY: RON FALSON, 1928-2008 by Ross Heathcote* ______________________________________________________________ [This obituary was published in the Sydney Morning Herald on August 20, 2008.] on Falson, one of Australia's foremost jazz musicians, was a regular in the nightclubs that boomed in Sydney after World War II, particularly Joe R Taylor's Celebrity Club, where he and Don Burrows formed the "frontline" of a celebrated house band. In those halcyon days of live music, he blew his trumpet throughout the country and internationally, sometimes backing such performers as Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr and Johnnie Ray. He often played in the old Sydney Stadium at Rushcutters Bay, the venue for concerts by Lionel Hampton, Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Kenton, Mel Torme, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald and Buddy Rich, among others. When not playing, Falson indulged another talent, photographing singers and musicians. Falson played until the end. He collapsed with a heart attack just after his last trumpet solo while performing at Tailors on Central, in Surry Hills, and never recovered. He was 80. Ron Falson was one of six boys born in Clovelly to Frank Falson, a master coppersmith, and his wife, Irene. He went to Clovelly Public School and to Sydney Technical High School. Frank gave his son a trumpet when the boy was 14 and Ron Falson (left) with Don Burrows (clarinet) at the Celebrity Club in the early 1950s… PHOTO © RON FALSON ARCHIVE __________________________________________________________ *Ross Heathcote is the late Ron Falson’s son-in-law. 1 listening to jazz, particularly the Dixieland style of Bob Crosby and the Bobcats, Bix Beiderbecke, Muggsy Spanier and Bunny Berigan.

[ only] Unit 3 The globalising world (1945–the present) Popular culture Popular culture includes a wide range of activities that a large number of people in a society engage in. Since World War II, Australia has developed strong industries in four key areas of popular culture: music, film, television and sport. Television and rock’n’roll music both arrived in 1956 and have had a strong influence on all groups within Australian society – this continues today. Sport has retained an important role in Australian life and has become closely tied to our sense of identity. The Australian film industry has also emerged to tell uniquely Australian stories that entertain and inform. While British, American and, more recently, European and Asian cultures have influenced us, Australia has developed its own distinct culture. Music, film, television and sport have not only become ways of reflecting who we are, but have also enabled Australia to engage with the rest of the world. chapter Source 1 ‘Hello possums’ – one of Australia’s many contributions to international popular13 culture is Barrie Humphries as Dame Edna Everage. 13A 13B 13C How did developments in How have the music, filmDRAFT and What contributions has popular culture influence Australia television industries in Australia Australia made to international Insert obook assess logo: after World War II? changed since World War II? popular culture?
