1 2 3 4 Acknowledgement Shri. K.P.Srikanth, FOIS implementer /TVC has taken special interest in maintaining key commercial data of the division including location-wise, day-wise earnings statistics of both UTS and PRS locations. Besides furnishing the data which has made this book possible, he has also made very significant contribution in shaping the final outcome of this book. Shri.V.Rajeev, Chief Booking Supervisor, Kollam has put in the painstaking efforts in actual compilation of the data in a booklet form. 5 6 INDEX Note: While Thiruvananthapuram Central (TVC), in view of its prominence and proximity to divisional headquarters, has been included as the first station under the section “Station-wise profile” at Page No 37, the other stations comprising the division appear in geographical order commencing from the southern end and progressing towards the north. Hence, Melapalayam station follows TVC and so on. After Tripunithura, the stations on the Kayankulam- Alapuzha route i.e from Cheppad to Tirunettur has been included. The northwardly pattern continues from Ernakulam Jn onwards (page 235); and needless to add, the final station Vallatholnagar winds up this section. The ritual art of Kaliyoottu was originally celebrated in North Malabar to propitiate Goddess Kali and was brought to Travancore by King Marthanda Varma (1729–1758). Legend has it that Marthanda Varma Maharaja tried to capture Kayamkulam province several times to expand his domain. Although unsuccessful, he did not give away his ambition. His one and only motive was the defeat Kayamkulam Raja. With the unyielding desire he was forced to make another arrangement for a war. On his way to Kayamkulam it is said that he chose the big ground near the Sarkara temple to take rest. Learning about the arrival of Maharaja in their mace, that leaders assembled together to meet the Maharaja. Hearing the Raja's stories of defeat at Kayamkulam, they suggested that the only way to his triumph was to offer a Kaliyoot to Sarkaradevi. In agreement with their suggestion the Maharaja decided to offer Kaliyoot to Sarkaradevi and finally became successful in the war.
