Ravindranatha Menon3 1Department of Industrial Production Engineering, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Nigeria 2 Department of Mechanical Engineering, Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun, Nigeria 3Functional Materials, National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram, 695019, Kerala, India Abstract:Critical stresses responsible for static failure of tire sidewalls were predicted using MATLAB PDE Toolbox.A model ofthe tire sidewall was developed using the PDE toolbox GUI draw tool and the parameters characterizing the linear isotropic elastic behaviour of rubber vulcanizates were established. The study was developed on maximum inflation pressure of 0.2206MPa and results obtained from the study indicates that the tire material developed from Natural Rubber/Rubber Seed oil modified kaolin composite are acceptable under static analysis with critical stress values of 5-25MPa obtained around the tire sidewall which are higher than the applied maximum inflation pressure. The maximum shear stress obtained is 15MPa at the periphery of the sidewall while the values obtain within the sidewalls ranges from -10 to 10MPa. The 2D FE model computations for static loading of the tire gave reasonably good prediction of the critical stresses responsible for failure and proved that the new tire material developed to be functional for tire sidewall applications. ABSTRACT Kaolin was modified using a chemical complex of hydrazine hydrate and oleochemical sodium salts derived from rub- ber seed oil (SRSO) and tea seed oil (STSO) respectively. Characterization of the pristine kaolin and the modified kao- lins were performed using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Simultaneous Thermogravimetric/Differential Ther- mal Analysis (TG/DTA) and UV Spectrophotometry. TG/DTA revealed that the incorporation of the oleochemical salts enhanced thermal decomposition of kaolin into metakaolin. Ultraviolet spectrophotometric studies conducted on the modified kaolin show for the first time that the SRSO-modified kaolin and STSO-modified kaolin have a peak absorb- ance wavelengths of 312.72 nm and 314.26 nm respectively.

Intercalation was attained by the entrance of hydrazine hydrate as co-intercalate. Characterization of the pristine kaolin and modified kaolin was done using powder X-ray diffraction which revealed increase in the interlayer basal spacing d-001 for the SRSO-modified and STSO-modified kaolins, confirming intercalation process. The FTIR studies further revealed that the fatty acid salts of rubber seed oil and tea seed oil were effectively intercalatedin the kaolinite layers as per the bands at 1564 cm -1and 1553 cm -1for SRSO-modified and STSO-modified kaolins respectively.
