To teach together, the obvious joint venture was feminism. Hence the title of a course: "Feminist Theory: Law and Literature" and our intensive study of the emerging field of "law and literature." But when we delved into the newly-minted disci- pline, we found to our dismay (and even, admitting, never-ending naivet) that like both "law" and "literature," much of that hyphenated field ex- amines a world in which white men attempt from a place of power to speak as if for us all. Unidentified Allies: Intersections of Feminist and Transpersonal Thought and Potential Contributions to Social Change Christine Brooks Institute of Transpersonal Psychology Palo Alto, CA, USA Contemporary Western feminism and transpersonalism are kaleidoscopic, consisting of interlocking influences, yet the fields have developed in parallel rather than in tandem. Both schools of praxis developed during the climate of activism and social experimentation of the 1960s in the United States, and both share a non-pathological view of the human experience. This discussion suggests loci of synthesized theoretical constructs between the two disciplines as well as distinct concepts and practices in both disciplines that may serve the other. -

And a woman with power is feared.” - Gloria Anzaldúa ABSTRACT YOU HAVE A VOICE HERE: IMPLEMENTING ARMENIAN FEMINIST LITERATURE WITHIN FEMINIST DISCOURSE Grace Hart This project melds personal narrative with literary criticism, as it excavates the literature of Armenian writer and political activist Zabel Yessayan, particularly with her novel My Soul in Exile and memoir The Gardens of Silihdar. I argue that the voice of Zabel Yessayan should be included in the feminist women of color discourse within institutions in the United States. I develop this argument by bringing in the works of Cherríe Moraga and Gloria Anzaldúa’s anthology This Bridge Called My Back: Writings by Radical Women of Color and showing parallels in themes and lenses such as excavating traumatic histories, the importance of personal identity, and using writing as a form of resistance. Zabel Yessayan’s texts and This Bridge both comprise stories conveying the theme of residing in the “in-between,” and topics concerning womanhood, culture, identity, alienation and isolation. -

Even so there are also some people who do not understand the understanding of feminism. Feminism is born from the unfair treatment felt by women. Through literary work, feminism was born as a thought to change the unfavorable situation for women. This paper examines the approach of feminism in the novel Salah Pilih by Nur St. Iskandar. Keywords: Literary Criticism, Feminism, Novel Feminism is a movement that demands the emancipation or equality and justice of rights by men. Feminism comes from Latin, femina or female. This term began to be used in the 1890s, referring to the theory of equality of men and women and the movement to obtain women's rights. The widespread definition of feminism is the advocacy of equality of women's rights in political, social, and economic matters. The feminist movement began in the late 18th century and flourished throughout the twentieth century beginning with the equality of women's political rights. Mary Wollstonecraft's A Vindication of the Rights of Woman is considered one of the earliest feminist writings containing criticisms of the French Revolution which applies only to men but not to women. A century later in Indonesia, Raden Ajeng Kartini co-authored his thoughts on the criticism of the situation of Javanese women who were not given the opportunity to attain equal education with men other than criticism of Dutch colonialism. -

How to Write Feminist Legal History: Some Notes on Genealogical Method, Family Law, and the Politics of the Present Ann Genovese Genealogy does not oppose itself to history as the lofty and profound gaze of the philosopher might compare to the molelike perspective of the scholar; on the contrary, it rejects the metahistorical deployment of ideal significations and indefinite teleologies. It opposes itself to the search for ‘origins’. Michel Foucault, ‘Nietzsche, Genealogy, History’ (1971)1 We are arguing for a political perspective in historical research and writing, a suggestion which must disturb every academic vigilant in pursuit of the ‘value-free’ … It is only by seeking and recognizing political relevance in history that we can bring it more directly into the battle of ideas ... Sally Alexander and Anna Davin, ‘Feminist History’ (1976)2 What is the purpose of feminist legal histories, and how can we write them, especially in Australia in our own times? In this essay I explore, in the spirit of dialogue, how we might confront the tension between legal history’s intellectual traditions, and the political effects of law’s legacies in the present. This question of method is an important inference in this collection’s conversation about ‘who owns the legal past’. My premise is that for many legal history projects, especially in a settler-colonial state like Australia, writing about law historically requires a conscientious identification of law’s present paradoxes, discontinuities, and iterations. To this end, this chapter will be in three parts. First, a description of the historiographical problems I have encountered in my current project, which is an account of how feminism and law met in the 1970s. -

Mainstream Feminism
Feminist movements and ideologies This collection of feminist buttons from a women's museum shows some messages from feminist movements. A variety of movements of feminist ideology have developed over the years. They vary in goals, strategies, and affiliations. They often overlap, and some feminists identify themselves with several branches of feminist thought. Groupings Judith Lorber distinguishes between three broad kinds of feminist discourses: gender reform feminisms, gender resistant feminisms, and gender revolution feminisms. In her typology, gender reform feminisms are rooted in the political philosophy of liberalism with its emphasis on individual rights. Gender resistant feminisms focus on specific behaviors and group dynamics through which women are kept in a subordinate position, even in subcultures which claim to support gender equality. Gender revolution feminisms seek to disrupt the social order through deconstructing its concepts and categories and analyzing the cultural reproduction of inequalities.[1] Movements and ideologies Mainstream feminism … "Mainstream feminism" as a general term identifies feminist ideologies and movements which do not fall into either the socialist or radical feminist camps. The mainstream feminist movement traditionally focused on political and legal reform, and has its roots in first- wave feminism and in the historical liberal feminism of the 19th and early- 20th centuries. In 2017, Angela Davis referred to mainstream feminism as "bourgeois feminism".[2] The term is today often used by essayists[3] and cultural analysts[4] in reference to a movement made palatable to a general audience by celebrity supporters like Taylor Swift.[5] Mainstream feminism is often derisively referred to as "white feminism,"[6] a term implying that mainstream feminists don't fight for intersectionality with race, class, and sexuality. -

From “Wall-Flower” to “Queen of the Forest”: Frontier Migration, Nature, and Early Ecofeminism in Caroline Kirkland’s A New Home, Who’ll Follow? (1839) Alexandra Ganser ABSTRACT In The Land Before Her: Fantasy and Experience of the American Frontiers, Annette Kolod- ny asserts that women’s literature claimed the West “as a potential sanctuary for an idealized do- mesticity” (xii) rather than imagining the “[m]assive exploitation and alteration of the continent” (xiii). Kolodny cites Caroline Kirkland’s A New Home, Who’ll Follow? (1839) as a key example of how women’s narratives imagined the triumph of domesticity in the ‘wilderness.’ This essay argues that Kirkland articulates mobility—understood as “socially produced motion” (Cresswell 3) according to the “new mobilities” (Urry) paradigm proposed by recent work in cultural geogra- phy—as a basis for transformed notions of both home and the natural environment. Analyzing its environmental imagination, I explore how A New Home, on the one hand, casts migration as fun- damental for a sensitized perception of the environment that challenges patriarchal notions of sub- duing the land as much as traditional ideas of domesticity. Kirkland undermines the conceptual binary between movement and domesticity in ways that question the environmental implications of both. At the same time, her western “removal” obscures the simultaneous removal of Native Americans in the 1830s and 1840s, erasing the ‘Indian’ not only from ‘civilization,’ but also from ‘natural’ American landscapes. The article discusses the environmental implications of a pioneer woman’s account of the frontier as fundamentally tied to effects of migration and relocation.
