Copyright by MARISSA KREIN 2015 All Rights Reserved “OUR NAVY”: WOMEN ACCEPTED FOR VOLUNTARY EMERGENCY SERVICE AT IOWA STATE TEACHER’S COLLEGE, 1942-1945 An Abstract of a Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts Marissa Krein University of Northern Iowa July 2015 ABSTRACT During World War II, Iowa State Teacher’s College (now known as University of Northern Iowa) was host to the first indoctrination school and later yeomen school (naval secretaries) of the United States Naval Women’s Reserve or the Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service (WAVES). The first class of 1,500 WAVES arrived at Iowa State Teacher’s College (ISTC) in December 1942. The women endured five to six weeks of an intensive introductory training. In April 1943, the indoctrination school was replaced by a yeomen school. The yeomen school remained in operation until it was closed in April 1945. During its twenty-nine months of operation the school trained 14,000 WAVES. This study serves as a first-time analysis of the WAVES’ experience at ISTC and Cedar Falls, IA through the use of primary sources, oral histories, local press coverage, and photographs. The experiences of these women are best assessed through the study of primary sources, oral histories, local press coverage, and photographs found at the Cedar Falls Historical Society, University of Northern Iowa Special Collections, and Rod Library. These sources illustrate the experience of individual women who trained and served as WAVES at ISTC. This study also complicates the current scholarship on the experience of women in quasi-military organizations in World War II. Scholars have noted that such women had to deal with gender stereotypes of other servicemen, senators, journalists, and their own family. These women were enlisted members of the Women’s Reserve of the United States Navy better known as Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Services (WAVES). Upon arrival at the Cedar Falls Indoctrination School, the women gave up their civilian luxuries and were billeted four to a sparsely furnished room with women from all forty- eight states and two territories. At the school they learned the basics about naval life and were drilled into sleek marching machines. Adjusting to life in the Navy was hard, many of the women experienced sore muscles and bouts of homesickness. Josephine Turner arrived at the indoctrination school in December 1942. She remembered the people of Cedar Falls welcoming the WAVES with open arms and hearts. Over fifty years later she recalled “…. The interest and friendliness extended to me that [Christmas] day and during my time in Cedar Falls was truly heartwarming and I’ll never forget them.”1 The Women’s Reserve Training Station at Iowa State’s Teacher’s College (ISTC) trained women first at the indoctrination school and later at yeomen (naval secretaries) school until April 1945. During its operation, the station and the WAVES were a novelty and attracted local and national publicity.2 However, after the closing of the training station it faded into obscurity, as did the contribution of the WAVES to war effort during World War II. Few monographs focus on the WAVES and their contribution to war effort during World War II, and none tell the story of the WAVES training stations at ISTC. This thesis will look at military reports, newspaper articles from local papers, photographs, oral histories, and memoirs of WAVES stationed at the Cedar Falls Training Station to understand the importance of the WAVES during World War II and to tell the story of the Women’s Reserve training station at ISTC. In addition this thesis will complicate the scholarship on the experience of women in quasi-military organizations in World War II. Scholars have noted that such women frequently had to deal with the gender stereotypes of other servicemen, senators, journalists, and their own families. The nation was worried that women in the military would upset the prevailing societal hierarchy. According to Lesia Meyer, many felt that allowing “women into [the] Army [and other military services], even as noncombatants, was to threaten the gender hierarchy that guaranteed only men that status and the power associated with the military service.”3 Despite this well-documented evidence of public disapproval of women in women in the military, my evidence suggests that there was at least some public support for women in quasi-military organizations during World War II. This article will examine the legal impediments to service by women in the United States military. This brings to light an interesting assessment of the meaning of the term “Rule of Law,” as the legal exclusions barring women from service, establishing barriers to equality and creating a type of legal glass ceiling to preclude promotion, all fell within the then-existing Rule of Law in the United States. Finally, this article looks at the remaining barriers to women in the military and reasons to open all fields and all opportunities to women in today’s military. I. THE CONCEPT OF THE RULE OF LAW Albert Venn Dicey, in “Law of the Constitution,” identified three principles which establish the Rule of Law: (1) the absolute supremacy or predominance of regular law as opposed to the influence of arbitrary power; (2) equality before the law or the equal subjection of all classes to the ordinary law of the land administered by the ordinary courts; and (3) the law of the constitution is a consequence of the rights of individuals as defined and enforced by the courts.1 This concept of the Rule of Law has existed since the beginning of the nation, most famously reflected in the writings of John Adams in drafting the * Colonel, USAF, Ret.     Women Ashore: The Contribution of WAVES to US Naval Science and Technology in World War II Kathleen Broome Williams On 30 July 1947, US Navy (USN) women celebrated their fifth anniversary as WAVES: Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Se rv ice. In ceremonies across the count ry, flags snapped and crisp young women saluted. Congratulatory messages arrived from navy brass around the globe. The Commander-in-Chief (C-in-C) of the Atlantic Fleet, Admiral William H.P. Blandy, noted (perhaps too optimistically) that "the splendid serv ices rendered by the WAVES...and their uncomplaining spirit of sacrifice and devotion to duty at all times" would never be forgotten by "a grateful navy."' Admiral Louis E. Denfeld, C-in-C Pacific, wrote more perceptively that "the vital role" played by the WAVES "in the defeat of the Axis nations is known to all and, though often unsung in peacetime, their importance has not decreased." Significantly, Admiral Denfeld added that he would welcome the addition of the WAVES "to the Regular Naval Establishment," an issue then hanging in the balance.' Indeed, for all the anniversary praise, the WAVES' contribution to wartime successes did not even guarantee them a permanent place in the navy once peace returned nor, until recently, has their "vital role" in the Allied victory received much scholarly attention. This article helps to round out the historical record by briefly surveying one aspect of the role of the WAVES: their contribution to naval science and technology. The navy has always been a technical service but World War II was the first truly technological war.

Rapoport’s “The Four Waves of Modern Terrorism,” is one of the most influential and widely debated theories in the field of terrorism studies. Following the terrorist attacks in the United States on September 11, 2001, Rapoport created his theoretical framework for modern terrorism by grouping previously indistinguishable patterns of political violence into four distinct waves, each lasting a generation and inspired by ideologies derived from anarchism, anti-colonialism, socialism, and religious fundamentalism. Since 1979 the world has existed within the fourth “Religious” wave that will dissipate by 2025 if the generational life cycle remains constant. Rapoport’s model will serve as the foundational source for this thesis. It will discuss the importance of the wave model and how it can be useful in counterterrorism efforts. Rapoport argues that academics and governments unduly focus on specific organizations and contemporary events, which make us less sensitive to generational patterns. Individual terrorist organizations will have specific defining features but understanding overarching global and generational patterns in real time can help shape thinking on the most effective ways to combat terrorism.

Katz* Introduction Among the more significant impacts of the 1991 War in the Persian Gulf is the altered image of women in the armed forces. The word "image" is carefully chosen. For years, women have held numerous positions in the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines, many in non-traditional fields. But with the Gulf War, the American public saw for the first time the widespread partici- pation of women in warfare. This was a TV war, and on television Americans saw women shipping out with their units and hefting sandbags in the desert. Eleven women were killed in the Gulf, five of them in action, and two were taken prisoner of war.' Fathers sent their daughters, husbands their wives, off to war. These were powerful images, at odds with the nation's understanding of the legal and social status of women and men. As a result, the Gulf War will ultimately alter the legal status of military women.

    The Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP): Marvelous Women With Their Eyes on the Stars Anne Wensley Senior Thesis Department of History Barnard College, Columbia University Professor Carl Wennerlind April 2019 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS “With the new day comes new strength and new thoughts” - Eleanor Roosevelt I’ve had the incredible privilege of growing up with a phenomenal, strong female role model: my mom, Lieutenant Colonel Laura Theodorson. When I was born, she was stationed on active duty at McGuire Air Force Base, New Jersey, eight years into what would become twenty-eight years of service in the U.S. Air Force. Twenty years ago, my mom transitioned to the Air Force Reserve at McChord Air Force Base, now Joint Base Lewis-McChord, south of Seattle, Washington, where she continued flying for the military while beginning an airline pilot career. The idea of women serving in military aviation was normalized for me from a young age, as I frequently saw both my mom and her close female friends in uniform and in the cockpit. I was introduced to the topic of the Women’s Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs) in 2010, when my mom had the distinction of escorting WASP Ruth Glaser Wright Guhse during their Congressional Gold Medal ceremony. In April of 2010, I had the honor of meeting WASP Dorothy Kacher Olson when my Girl Scout Troop served as color guard for a City Council meeting in University Place, Washington, during which Olson was recognized. 2 It wasn’t until seven and a half years later, when taking Professor Premilla Nadasen’s History course on Women, Gender, and Sexuality in the 20th Century United States in the Fall 2017 that I began engaging with the topic of Women in the U.S.
