Nei primi anni di attività del dottorato, il momento più intenso di tale confronto è stato lo svolgimento della prima Graduate Conference (21-23 ottobre 2015), i cui atti inaugurano anche questi Quaderni della ricerca, con un primo volume che accoglie i contributi presentati al convegno, e preceduti dalla lezione magistrale di hans belting. mi piace sottolineare il fatto che la complessa macchina organizzativa del con- vegno (la scelta della tematica, la scelta e l’invito del keynote speaker, la redazione e la pubblicazione del call for papers, la delicata fase di selezione dei papers tra le numerose proposte pervenute, l’organizzazione materiale delle giornate e del- l’accoglienza ai partecipanti, la cura degli atti e la loro pubblicazione) è stata in- teramente presa in carico dai dottorandi del XXiX ciclo, a loro volta raccolti in un comitato organizzatore più ristretto, ma sempre attento a tutti gli orizzonti disci- plinari del dottorato. tutti i passaggi sono stati comunque seguiti dal collegio dei docenti, che, al momento d’avvio della pubblicazione degli atti, ha costituito un comitato scientifico per la revisione di tutti i contributi, con la collaborazione di lettori esterni con il sistema del double blind peer review. Questo primo volume dei Quaderni della ricerca del Dottorato in Studi lette- rari, linguistici e comparati non si distingue solo per l’alto livello dei risultati scien- tifici, di cui il merito spetta interamente ai giovani ricercatori che si sono impegnati per il successo del convegno. esso ha per noi il valore aggiunto del lavorare in- sieme, docenti e dottorandi, per la crescita scientifica e umana della nostra comu- nità di ricerca. carlo Vecce 5 premessa / Foreword Foreword Since its inception in 2013, the phD programme in “literary, linguistic and com- parative Studies” at the University of Naples “l’orientale” has been characterised by a strong interdisciplinary dialogue. its educational paths enable phD students to exchange their views and collectively experiment with new methodologies and forms of communication, while pursuing their individual and highly specialised research projects. the first years of the phD programme saw a fruitful collaboration among the phD Students in the conference held at the University of Naples “l’ori- entale” on 21-23 october 2015. the proceedings, introduced by hans belting’s lectio magistralis, are collected in this volume, which inaugurates the Quaderni della ricerca, published in Naples. i am delighted to highlight that the complex organisation of the conference – topic choice, keynote speaker invitation, call for papers, paper selection, confer- ence organisation, participants welcoming as well as proceedings editing and pub- lication – was undertaken by the phD Students of the XXiX cycle and especially by a smaller organising committee which was always conscious of the disciplinary horizons of the phD programme. all the stages were nonetheless supervised by the phD board of professors whom, in view of the publication of the proceedings, constituted a scientific committee for the peer-review process. all papers under- went a double blind peer-review with the collaboration of external reviewers. the first volume of the Quaderni della ricerca of the phD programme in “lit- erary, linguistic and comparative Studies” does not only stand out for its valuable scientific outcomes – whose merit lies entirely with the young researchers who committed themselves to the success of this initiative – but also for the added value of the joint work of professors and phD Students in the prospect of the scientific and human growth of our research community. carlo Vecce Translated by Emilio Amideo 6 Prefazione in accordo con l’ottica del dottorato in Studi letterari, linguistici e comparati, che prevede un dialogo aperto e uno scambio fecondo fra discipline diverse, la scelta dell’argomento della Graduate Conference, tenutasi all’Università degli Studi di Napoli “l’orientale” dal 21 al 23 ottobre 2015, è ricaduta sul tema dell’immagine, che si presta a letture plurime e approcci di analisi differenziati. ben oltre le declinazioni disciplinari e le specifiche definizioni operative, pensiamo all’immagine come elemento fluttuante tra rappresentazione e creazione. Nei passaggi tra realtà testuale ed extratestuale – al di là del testo verbale propriamente detto – essa da un lato rappresenta un mondo in atto, facendosi talvolta simbolo, dall’altro si carica di una forza generativa che schiude la possibilità di un mondo in potenza. oggi, in una società in cui l’individuo è esposto a un flusso incessante di sollecitazioni visive, la dialettica tra fissità della mimesi e dinamismo della creazione continua a offrire un terreno fertile d’indagine scientifica. Scopo del presente volume è, dunque, rintracciare le traiettorie lungo le quali si interseca e si biforca tale duplicità. a partire dal discorso maturato intorno al tema dell’immagine durante le giornate di convegno, il volume raccoglie interventi, in lingua italiana e inglese, che rinviano a un’ampia sottotematica che va dal linguaggio-per-immagini alla semiotica, dalle strategie di significazione del testo alla visual culture. il volume si apre con la relazione di hans belting, keynote speaker del convegno e studioso di storia dell’arte, antropologia e teoria dei media, la cui ricerca si orienta so- prattutto sull’indagine delle funzioni e delle modalità di ricezione dell’opera d’arte in relazione al suo contesto sociale e culturale. il suo contributo, affiancando il metodo d’indagine antropologica alla lettura iconologica, fornisce un quadro di riferimento pre- zioso entro il quale si collocano i contributi successivi scritti da dottorandi e dottori di ricerca. tali contributi affrontano temi legati all’archeologia, alla filologia e alla lingui- stica italiana, alla letteratura (americana

    GARAGE MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART PRESENTS: IF OUR SOUP CAN COULD SPEAK: MIKHAIL LIFSHITZ AND THE SOVIET SIXTIES March 7–May 13, 2018 This exhibition celebrates the fiftieth anniversary of the scandalous publication of The Crisis of Ugliness by Soviet philosopher and art critic Mikhail Lifshitz. The book, which first appeared in 1968, was an anthology of polemical texts against Cubism and Pop Art—and one of the only intelligent discussions of modernism’s social context and overall logic available in the Soviet Union—making it popular even among those who disagreed with Lifshitz’s conclusions. The result of a three-year Garage Field Research project, If our soup can could speak takes as its starting point Lifshitz’s book and related writings to re-explore the vexed relations between so- called progressive art and politics in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, as well as the motivations and implications of Lifshitz’s singular crusade against the modern classics. His appraisal of the crisis in twentieth-century art differs fundamentally from the standard attacks on modernism in government-issue Soviet art criticism, and in fact can be read as their direct critique. All the while, Lifshitz is in constant dialogue and debate with the century’s leading intellectuals in the West (Heidegger, Benjamin, Adorno, Horckheimer, Levi-Strauss, and others), searching for answers to the questions they posed from the perspective of someone with a unique inner experience of the Stalinist epoch’s revolutionary tragedy. The exhibition unfolds as a narrative of archival documents, art works, and text fragments, which are situated in a sequence of ten interiors that could be seen as spatial forms for landmark moments in the evolution of modernism, or in Lifshitz’s thinking.

  • The Comrades of the Past: the Soviet Enlightenment Between Negation
    Abstract: The paper constructs a concept of Soviet Enlightenment C R through the debate between Lenin and Bogdanov on the question of what I is proletarian culture and what is the relationship of the proletariat to the S The Comrades of I bourgeois knowledge. The paper starts with the overview of Bolshevik’s S political theory of spontaneity and organization. By referring to Adorno, Lukács and Lifshitz I show that this philosophical binary points to the & the Past: The Soviet dark rationalist side of the Soviet Enlightenment, but at the same time C demonstrate that this couple produces a critical reinvestigation of what R I is the now and what is the past. From here I try to elaborate two models T of the Soviet Enlightenment encyclopedic knowledge production that I Enlightenment Q equally calls to reformulate the past systems in the proletarian terms, but U differs in the understanding of the type of relationality that bridges the E past and the proletarian present. Lenin’s model rests on the “use value” / Between Negation of the historical past and proposes to appropriate it for the Socialist use, Volume 4 / while Bogdanov’s model treats past in terms of continuous comradeship Issue 2 between the labour of generations. I conclude by elaborating the idea of and Affirmation the comradeship in its relation to history, communism and knowledge production. A Soviet painter painted him with one leg, one arm, and one eye - and was shot for bourgeois naturalism. A second Soviet painter painted the commissar with two legs, two arms, and two eyes and was shot for reactionary idealism. A third Soviet artist posed the commissar in profile, showing the good leg, good arm, and good eye and was given a medal for socialist realism. Aline E. Simmons, an expert in Russian literature, who attempted without success to negotiate library and educational exchanges with Soviet officials in 1947, noted that "culture in the Soviet Union is political, and there is a direct correlation between all cultural manifestations and Soviet domestic and international politics. In short, the determination of cultural policies rests entirely with the government."' Artistic aesthetics and hence style are dictated by the exigencies and purposes of politics. In general terms, government policy has dictated three basic styles of twentieth century Russian art, two inspired by creative trends from abroad and the third in accord with government condemnation of Western artistic values.2 The first phase was a continuation of nineteenth century trends. Iconography, adopted from the Byzantine culture, was promoted by the state to inspire the masses. Thus the residences of the Tsar and the homes of most Russian families were filled with icons.

Russia Eternal: Recalling The Imperial Era In Late- And Post-Soviet Literature And Culture Abstract The return of Tsarist buildings, narratives and symbols has been a prominent facet of social life in post- Soviet Russia. My dissertation aims to explain this phenomenon and its meaning by tracking contemporary Russia’s cultural memory of the Imperial era. By close-reading both popular and influential cultural texts, as well as analyzing their conditions of production and reception, I show how three generations of Russian cultural elites from the 1950s until today have used Russia’s past to fight present- day political battles, and outline how the cultural memory of the Imperial epoch continues to inform post- Soviet Russian leaders and their mainstream detractors. Chapters One and Two situate the origin of Russian culture’s current engagement with the pre-Revolutionary era in the social dynamic following Stalin’s death in 1953.

Ross Wolfe “STALINISM IN ART AND ARCHITECTURE, OR, THE FIRST POSTMODERN STYLE” Book Review: Boris Groys’ Total Artwork of Stalinism and Vladimir Paperny’s Architecture in the Age of Stalin: Culture Two ast year, the English translations of two major works of art and architectural criticism from the late Soviet period were rereleased with Lapparently unplanned synchronicity. A fresh printing of Vladimir Paperny’s Architecture in the Age of Stalin: Culture Two (2002, [Культура Два, 1985]) was made available in June 2011 by Cambridge University Press. Verso Books, having bought the rights to the Princeton University Press translation of Boris Groys’ Total Art of Stalinism (1993 [Gesamtkunstwerk Stalin, 1988]), republished the work in a new edition. This hit the shelves shortly thereafter, only two months after Paperny’s book was reissued. Each book represents an attempt, just prior to the Soviet Union’s collapse, to come to grips with the legacy of its artistic and architectural avant-garde of the 1920s, as well as the problematic character of the transition to Socialist Realism and neoclassicism in the mid-1930s, lasting up until Stalin’s death in 1953. Not only do Paperny’s and Groys’ writings follow a similar trajectory, they intersect biographically as well. The two authors collaborated closely with one another, reading and revising each other’s manuscripts as they went. But their arguments should not for that reason be thought identical. Paperny began his research much earlier, in the late 1970s, and Groys’ own argument is clearly framed in part as a polemical response to his colleague’s claims.

  • Western Modernism Vs. Socialist Realism
    It is well known that the Cold War was represented in the context of art by a conflict between modernist – or more precisely, abstract – art on the one hand, and figurative, realist – or rather, socialist realist – art on the other. When we speak about the Cold War, we usually have in mind the period after WWII. However, the 01/10 ideological conflict between abstract and realist art was formulated before WWII, and all the relevant arguments were merely reiterated later without any substantial changes. This essay will discuss and illustrate the genealogy and development of the conflict between the Western and Soviet concepts of art before and during the Cold War. Boris Groys ÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊFrom the Western side, the foundational document that formulated and theorized this conflict was Clement Greenberg’s famous essay The Cold War “Avant-Garde and Kitsch” (1939). According to Greenberg, the avant-garde operates mainly by between the means of abstraction: it removes the “what” of the work of art – its content – to reveal its “how.” The avant-garde reveals the materiality of the Medium and the m s i artworks and the techniques that traditional art l a e used to produce them, whereas kitsch simply R Message: t s uses these techniques to produce certain i l a i effects, to make an impression on the primitive, c o uncritical spectator. HEGEL’S AESTHETICS AND SOVIET MARXISM: MIKHAIL LIFSHITS’S COMMUNIST IDEAL A B S T R A C T This paper discusses the materialist reading of Hegel’s Aesthetics by Soviet philosopher Mikhail Lifshits in his writings in the 1930s. Engaged in the development of Soviet Marxian aesthetic theory, Lifshits adapted the Hegelian conception of art as a form of truth and actualisation of the Idea in a sensible form as ideal. However, he rejected Hegel’s tragic fatalism regarding the historical fate of arts and their sublation in a new supra-sensual stage of the Spirit’s development. Lifshits sought the only answer to the historical destiny of arts in the Marxian dialectic of history. Here, he identified the aesthetic ideal with the realisation of communism. It is on this basis that throughout the 1930s Soviet aesthetic theory combined readings of Hegel, Marx, Engels and Lenin in order to develop its own version of art’s autonomy, one that was anchored in the concept of the ideal. The ideal in its historical and trans-historical dimension was seen as bridging between sensuousness and truth, and pointing towards the communist ideal. The paper argues that this concept of the ideal pointed towards a dialectical futurity that could not succumb to the official Stalinist formulations of dialectical materialism. Unlike the Stalinist victory of “socialism in one country” as the consummation of the historical dialectic, the question of the historical destiny of arts pointed at communism as an incomplete and yet historically actualisable ideal.

Vol. 3, No. 5, 2015, pp. 108-119. doi: 10.11648/j.ijla.20150305.17 Abstract: The aim of this research paper is to explore by comparing and contrasting between the two literary characters Hamlet and Oblomov how they are in their essence indecisive that are exploited by William Shakespeare and Ivan Goncharov in different historical ages to project different visions of the human situation. Every author is influenced by his age to certain degrees and if the art of characterization of William Shakespeare is set against that of Ivan Goncharov, it is because of the difference of ideological perspectives. William Shakespeare’s character Hamlet comes from the Renaissance England and Ivan Goncharov’s character Oblomov comes from the nineteenth century Russia. The former is in certain ways different from the latter despite the fact that those traits of the both characters are the same as indecision and procrastination. The comparison and contrast will be highlighted in this paper in terms of Marxist hermeneutics, which is scientific theory and method of analyzing the social and literary types in the context of class milieu.

    Scientific Baroque – for everyone. Constructing and conveying an art epoch during the Stalinist period in the Soviet Union and in Soviet Estonia Krista Kodres Thomas da Costa Kaufmann once remarked that the Princeton University library alone contains over 5000 books with the word ‘Baroque’ in their titles.1 On reading just a few of the writings on the Baroque, it appears that from the end of the eighteenth century onwards – when the problematic nature of the style first began to torment men of letters – the works of art and architecture of the era have been described in vastly dissimilar ways, with the result that the texts on the subject can give the impression that their various authors were writing about entirely different works and eras. It is precisely such obvious differences in the treatment of the Baroque (or of any other period, of course) that make the corpus of work in the discipline so challenging as an object of study. Regrettably, one must admit that, despite the long-abiding strength of historiography since the historiographic turn in art history occurred, research into the historiography of the Baroque is still only in its infancy. Accordingly, and among other topics, the art history of the immediate post-war period – i.e. of the Stalinist period in the Soviet Union – including the treatment of the Baroque style during that period, is now buried under a rather thick layer of dust.2 In Estonia, one of the former republics of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, research into socialist-era art history has only recently begun to arouse interest among scholars.3 The current article attempts to examine interpretations of the Baroque made by the leading art historians working in the central institutions of art history in the Soviet Union during the Stalinist period, as well as texts penned by art historians in Estonia.

This timely exhibition challenges visitors to explore the role Tof knowledge in recent history and in the present—a time of so-called information societies, in which discourses flow in opposite directions and knowledge expands but appears to be constrained by its ubiquity and its multitude of sources. Although its roots stretch much further back, the clearest precursor of the current interest in the uses of knowledge dates from the early nineteenth century, with the dawning awareness of the desirability of a type of education that pages 1–2, 4–5, 9–13 goes beyond mechanical skills and productive activities. CAROLE CONDÉ & This legacy has come down to us today, but it is clearly KARL BEVERIDGE in need of reformulation. This is the deeper significance Art Is Political, 1975 of an exhibition based on a critical review of pedagogy, a Panel of 9 B&W reassessment of our ways of learning, and an analysis of the photographs means and resources allocated to education. This project stands out among the exhibitions that the Museo Reina Sofía has organized to present the results of long-term processes of artistic and intellectual dialogue and research. These “thesis” exhibitions show us a museum that sees itself as a living institution that is not simply a container for our visual culture but is above all an important catalyst for reflection and public debate. The very act of organizing an exhibition of this type in a space dedicated to modern and contemporary art is an example of how knowledge now flows from various sources simultaneously, how it moves outside the academic world, and how it is enriched when it comes into contact with citizens.
