Hanover, 3 September 2010

Impressive architecture provides the backdrop for outstanding achievements in design: BMW World Munich hosts the cele- brations for the winners of the 2010 iF communication design award.

Host and iF director Ralph Wiegmann and the presenter Bettina Cramer are a well established team when it comes to handing over the trophies to the 30 iF gold award winners. The award winners were called to the stage in front of an audience of several hundred guests from the areas of advertising, media, business and design.

A total of 1,687 entries (compared to 1,367 in 2009) were submitted to this year’s iF communication design award. The jury handed out the coveted iF label 499 times to 480 entries. Twenty of these entries received awards in more than one category. Designers and agencies will receive points in the iF ranking as well as in the national rankings of PAGE magazine and the German W&V Werben und Verkaufen.

Impressions from the Jury

The 16 strong international expert jury evaluated the entries in the categories of digital media, product interfaces, print media, packaging, corporate archi- tecture, crossmedia and too good to be true.

“It was very encouraging to see the large number of different types of entries. We have seen many fantastic entries that communicate their branding in an excellent way, for example in the area of packaging.” Paul Flowers

“We had really strong entries in the area of product interfaces. The trend is clearly developing towards ‘touch’. But not just your simple drag & drop, there’s multi-touch and gesture operation. And the products not only impress from a technological point of view but also with their excellent usability and visibly improved efficiency.” Prof. Astrid Beck For further information: iF International Forum Design GmbH “Overall, the quality of the entries was at a high level. However, as far as I’m con- Anja Kirschning, Carmen Wille Messegelaende cerned, the submissions were a bit too traditional. I would have loved to have 30521 Hanover, GERMANY seen more innovative ideas.” phone +49.511.89-32403/-438 fax +49.511.89-32406 Magdalena Frankowska [email protected] [email protected] www.ifdesign.de “Overall, the quality of submissions was excellent. “The entries weren’t as playful as in previous years, there is a return to objectivity and sobriety – maybe as a result of the economic crisis. During the previous years, it was pretty hip to enter DVDs, CDs or USB sticks. Today, there is a stronger focus on print, on excellent Web implementations and on representations on mobile end user appliances.

“There was also a trend towards using portraits and hand-drawn illustrations. If you like, a turning away from photography and a focus on drawing.” Dr. Andreas Siefke

02. product interfaces

Category: product interfaces Entry/Project: BenQ Gemini | Mobile Internet Device Client/Company: BenQ Corporation, Taipei/TAIWAN Design: BenQ Corporation, Taipei/TAIWAN (inhouse design team)

“BenQ present a new, foldable, mobile internet device with two screens. The first screen can be used like a cell phone; by unfolding and adding the second screen, you get more functionality. For example, the increased screen area allows for easy website scrolling or for comparing appointments during a phone conver- sation. The interface is also very impressive with its small units that can easily be moved around via drag & drop. Altogether a very beautiful interface.”

Category: product interfaces Entry/Project: IdeaPad U1 | Hybrid Notebook in U Design Client/Company: Lenovo () Ltd., Beijing/ Design: Lenovo (Beijing) Ltd., Beijing/CHINA

“Lenovo are presenting a new and excellent idea for desktop design. This touch screen can be operated via gestures with which the area can be extended or made smaller and objects can be moved around. Identity GmbH, Berlin/GERMANY (Anne Kohlermann/Creative Direction & Art Direction; Cornelius Mangold/Art Direction, Copywriting & Strategy; Sarah Illenberger/Styling; Attila Hartwig/ Photography)

“This campaign honors the tradition of FSB and its design history: the idea of transferring individual metal elements from the door handle collections into ar- chaic shapes like dinosaur skeletons is simply ingenious. For a print campaign, the visual language is very striking and also surprising. A very well executed entry worthy of a gold award.”

Category: print media image Entry/Project: Premierenplakate | Posters Client/Company: Kultur Ruhr GmbH, Gelsenkirchen/GERMANY Design: strichpunkt design, Stuttgart/GERMANY (Kirsten Dietz & Jochen Rädeker/Creative Direction; Julia Ochsenhirt/Art Direction; Agnetha Wohlert & Julia Ochsenhirt/Design)

“The combination of the script typeface with these very special, urban photos creates a striking and very emotionally charged language. The ‘rough’ charm of the posters, in which background and foreground levels often seem to com- bine into a new theatrical reality, provides a platform extremely well-suited to the communication of cultural events during the Ruhrtriennale. An excellent piece of contemporary design!”

“This series of posters represents the order of topics in forthcoming lectures: the metamorphosis of art and design has been implemented by simple, yet very effective, means. A pointillist yellow rectangle and a blue, magenta and green geometrical body are graphical representations of the different content levels. A very minimalist, very precise piece of work that deserves gold.”

Category: print media typography Entry/Project: Kult Mag 7 | Customer Magazine Client/Company: Kult Model Agency, Hamburg/GERMANY Design: Christian Tönsmann Kommunikationsdesign, Hamburg/GERMANY

“These notebooks are lovingly produced and, besides an excellent acquisition strategy (designers and agencies are the target groups for the packaging materi- als company), they provide excellent added value: the notebooks not only show materials but, in addition to being a notebook, offer a calendar with fantastic illus- trations on different themes, one of which is food. The books surprise the user in a positive way and are of an outstanding design quality that clearly deserves an iF gold award.” For further information:

“If you are not exactly enthusiastic about 3D photography, then you should take a look at this book: these photos are better than anything 3D you’ll have ever seen. Using the theme of skateboarding for these precise and unbelievably three-di- mensional images was an excellent choice. You are drawn into these images and you will be just as impressed as the jury who honored this outstanding book with an iF gold award.”

Category: print media corporate communciation Entry/Project: Anästhesisten (Anesthesiologists) | Corporate Design Client/Company: Die Freien Anästhesisten, Krefeld/GERMANY Design: Hesse Design GmbH, Dusseldorf/GERMANY (Silke Heiburg, Klaus Hesse)

“This humorous reference to ‘counting sheep’ in the corporate design for an as- sociation of anesthesiologists brings some verve to a field that is usually treated in a rather conservative way. The experiment of using self-parody in graphic design, whilst avoiding looking ridiculous has been implemented perfectly here. The consistency of the design and the beautiful typography were additional rea- sons for honoring this CD with an iF gold award.”

“The book about the Borkebjs monsters is a lovely and beautifully implemented publication. The illustrations and images are brilliant, the typography has been used sparingly and supports the image of the monster world, which is home to the Borkebjs. The cover offers an additional plus: by moving the little plastic squares around, you can try to complete the slide puzzle. A great book!” For further information:

Innere Angelegenheiten Basel/ SWITZERLAND Design: l’art interactive ag, Basel/SWITZERLAND, Buchner Bründler Archi- tects BSA AG, Basel/SWITZERLAND

„Flashing façade is a project that manages to bring a brilliant medium into the dull and dreary concrete world of the city. This example of the Swiss pavilion for the 2010 Expo in Shanghai could conquer the world, thanks to its LED technology and its digital control possibilities that bring living pictures into the heart of the city. Its solar cell array that continually recharges during the day and produces current at night means that this project has been efficiently implemented both from an energy- and sustainability point of view. A fantastic example that will in- spire architecture students and, therefore, future architects.“

„With highly intelligent, cleverly developed ideas that cost little to implement, this corporate design delivers a wonderful impact. Thanks to the black display bars, print media comes together brilliantly with urban corporate architecture and corporate culture. Andreas Doria presents a black bar not only in the graphical sense, but also as a display, on which various information, pictures and docu- ments can be examined: the display becomes a communicative element. A won- derful and successful entry.“

07. too good to be true

Category: too good to be true Entry/Project: Dortmunder U | Poster Client/Company: Regionalverband Ruhr, Essen/GERMANY Design: Oktober Kommunikationsdesign GmbH, Bochum/GERMANY

“The color combination of brown and dark blue is focused on the striking U: you can imagine that this poster design will appeal to young people and make them want to visit the building in person. The interplay of architecture and typography in the image works extremely well, and the illumination of the capital U is an ap- pealing aspect.”

Category: too good to be true Entry/Project: Friseur Paul | Logo Client/Company: Friseur Paul, Augsburg/GERMANY Design: Oktober Kommunikationsdesign GmbH, Bochum/GERMANY (Artur Gulbicki, Mara Weyel, Christoph Sauter)

“A script typeface forms the basis for this logo and, if you like, gives this hair- dresser a unique face. Critics might say that this is not a totally new idea, but the excellent and witty implementation has impressed us. The illustration is tradi- tional but perfectly composed and therefore very appealing.”

Everything in this magazine surprises and is new – it could hardly be bettered.” For further information:
