The International Transport Forum The International Transport Forum is an intergovernmental organisation with 57 member countries. It acts as a think tank for transport policy and organises the Annual Summit of transport ministers. ITF is the only global body that covers all transport modes. The ITF is politically autonomous and administratively integrated with the OECD. The ITF works for transport policies that improve peoples’ lives. Our mission is to foster a deeper understanding of the role of transport in economic growth, environmental sustainability and social inclusion and to raise the public profile of transport policy. The ITF organises global dialogue for better transport. We act as a platform for discussion and pre-negotiation of policy issues across all transport modes. We analyse trends, share knowledge and promote exchange among transport decision-makers and civil society. The ITF’s Annual Summit is the world’s largest gathering of transport ministers and the leading global platform for dialogue on transport policy. -

The Suzhou National High-tech District tram was investigated as a J6 case study. Two key findings are highlighted. Firstly, the new tramway was routed along the “path of least resis- P2 tance”–avoiding dense urban areas, to reduce conflict with cars. Secondly, regarding urban transport integration, R3 four perspectives were evaluated, namely planning and design, service operation, transport governance and user R4 experience. Findings show insufficient integration in the following aspects, namely tram and bus routes and services, O2 fares on multi-modal journeys, tram station distribution, service intervals, and luggage auxiliary support. For immediate release 1 December, 2015 China Railway + Transit Exhibition and Conference Opens Today in Shanghai Today marks the debut of China Railway + Transit Exhibition and Conference 2015 (CRTEC). The show is jointly organised by UBM Asia and the China Chamber of Commerce for the Import and Export of Machinery and Electronic Products (CCCME). The exhibition will take place at the Shanghai New International Exhibition Centre (SNIEC) in Shanghai, China from 1-3 December, 2015 and is expected to attract manufacturers and buyers from the railway, urban transit and relevant transportation industries. The show is co-located with Marintec China - the largest maritime and shipbuilding event in Asia. Visitors would be able to visit both events on the same trip. The booming railway industry market in China offers huge business opportunities China’s railway industry has developed rapidly since the beginning of the 21st century and has achieved profound success, especially in high-speed railway and urban rail transit. By 2014, China’s railway mileage reached 112,000 kilometres and high-speed operating mileage reached more than 16,000 kilometres. The transportation of 2.357 billion passengers and 3.813 billion tons of freight by railway nationwide ranked first in the world. The quantity of national railway locomotives was 21,100, that of railway trucks was 710,100 and that of the railway passenger trains was 60,600, which includes 1,411 multiple units and 13,696 vehicles. With the massive investment in ordinary and high-speed railways, China will remain the world’s largest railway market in the coming five years. -

Contesting the Commercialization and Sanctity of Religious Tourism in The Shaolin Monastery, China Abstract The Shaolin Monastery annually attracts millions of visitors from around the world. However, the overcommercialization of these sacred places may contradict the values and philosophies of Buddhism. This study aims to comprehensively understand the balance between commercialization and sanctity, engaging with 58 Chinese practitioners and educators in 7 focus groups. Participants articulated their expectation to avoid overcommercialization, and they discussed the conflicts between commercialization and sanctity to further explore on how to mitigate over commercialization. Based on the study findings, a balanced model of religious tourism development is proposed and specific recommendations are offered to sustainably manage religious sites. Keywords: Shaolin monastery, kung fu, culture, commercialization, sanctity, religion INTRODUCTION A popular Chinese saying states that “All martial arts under heaven arose out of the Shaolin Monastery.” The Shaolin Monastery is the birthplace of Dhyana (also known as Zen, a Buddhism philosophy that emphasizes internal meditation) and Shaolin kung fu, which evolved from Buddhism. This martial art tradition, which spanned for over 1,500 years, involves the Shaolin monks learning the Buddhism doctrines and practicing the Dhyana (Chan) philosophy in their martial arts. This practice has distinguished Shaolin kung fu from other types of Chinese kung fu (The Shaolin Monastery, 2010). The movie Shaolin Monastery released in 1982 established the global reputation of Chinese kung fu and the Shaolin Monastery. A number of movies are also made subsequently based on topics involving Chinese kung fu and the monastery. For example, the recent movie, The Grand Masters (2013), introduced kung fu worldwide as a fascinating element of the Chinese culture. -
