Alberto Giacometti, from the mid 1950’s on, began working from life, drawing and sculpting heads of his friends and family. One of his most important subjects was his younger brother Diego, who had sat for a sculpted portrait when Alberto was only thirteen. He became the artist’s alter ego, although a talented artist and sculptor himself. Diego’s high forehead and sharp profile, are instantly recognizable in many works throughout the artist’s life, growing in intensity, as Giacometti focused on the powerful gaze. The artist is quoted as having said: ‘The object of art is not to reproduce reality, but to create a reality of the same intensity.’

In late 1907, possibly in September, prominent New York physician Pearce Property of a Palm Beach Lady Bailey commissioned Irving Ramsay Wiles to paint his five year old twin sons, Pearce 81 and James in Mattapoisett, Massachusetts. He paid Wiles $1,600 (including expenses). American, 1856-1925 The paint was hardly dry on the canvas Val D’Aosta: A Mountain Stream, circa 1907 when Wiles showed the double portrait Stamped with the artist’s estate stamp JSS on the reverse in the 1907 winter exhibition at the Oil on canvas National Academy of Design, identifying 17 1/8 x 21 1/4 inches Dr. Bailey as its owner. Volume VII, New Haven and London: Yale University Press, 2012, no. 1409 (as untraced), illus. p. 296 C $20,000-40,000 Richard Ormond describes the present work, the location of which was unknown when his catalogue raisonné of Sargent’s work was published, as “a sketchy view of a stream, almost certainly at Peuterey. In common with his other studies of the brook, the artist allows no horizon line to interrupt his close-up view of stream and brook.” [John Singer Sargent: Figures and Landscapes, 1900-1907, Complete Paintings, Volume VII, p. 296]

From 1900 to 1907, John Singer Sargent traveled extensively, visiting the Middle East as well as numerous destinations in

79 Europe that included Spain, Norway, and the Alps. Tiring of formal portraiture, he delighted in creating a virtual travelogue of paintings that documented his trips. A visit to the Val D’Aosta in Italy inspired numerous works in oil and watercolor, several depicting crystalline Alpine waters playing over rocks and forming eddies in pools. These compositions, freely painted with robust brushstrokes, some depicting the rushing waters at close range, are nearly modern in sensibility. Val D’Aosta, clearly inspired by this sojourn, shows Sargent at his most fluid, the composition rendered in a vibrant palette of plums, green and gold. C $50,000-80,000

Provenance: Private collection

Literature: Richard H. Love, William Chadwick (1879-1962): An American Impressionist, Chicago: The Richard H. Love Gallery, 1978, p. 16 illus.

The passion for Japanisme that swept through American art in the 1890s is exemplified in Seated Woman in Kimono. Taking an approach inspired by Whistlerian aestheticism, Chadwick offset the broad sweep of his subject’s flowered garment against the compact geometry of her space, creating as much a decorative conception as a rendering of his subject. Chadwick’s Impressionist brush handling serves to suppress individual detail, adding to the overall harmony of the image.

A native of Yorkshire, England, Chadwick emigrated to the United States in 1882. He studied at the Art Students League, traveled frequently to Europe, and settled with his family in Old Lyme, Connecticut, in 1915, where he remained an active art of the artists’ colony.
