The contract to complete the final stage of work has been awarded to NACE Civil Engineering Pty Ltd. The final stage of the project will deliver 20 kilometres of upgraded road from Tianjara Falls to Billy’s Hill near Bulee Gap. This final stage will improve the steep incline east of Sassafras and link the first two stages of work. The final stage of work is expected to start mid-2009 and be completed in late 2010. The original $80 million estimate for the project has risen to $95 million, since the original budget was determined in 2000. The NSW Government provided $34 million in 2001, with $34 million from the Federal Government and $12 million from Shoalhaven City Council. Stage one, the 24 kilometres from Hames Road to Morton National Park, was finished in June 2007. Stage two, the nine kilometres from Bulee to Nerriga, is under way and expected to be open to traffic in mid-2009. A $22.5 million contract for the second stage of the upgrade, comprising the nine kilometre section from 44 kilometres west of Hames Road (near the Touga Road junction just east of the Bulee mountain area at Billy’s Hill) to Nerriga, was awarded to Nace Civil Engineering Pty Ltd in July 2007. The second stage includes major improvements, widening, realigning and sealing to the existing steep and narrow section from Bulee Gap to the Endrick River. Earthworks and the new bridge near Bulee Gap are nearing completion and 3.5 kilometres of new pavement was sealed before Christmas 2008. For all enquiries concerning operational matters relating to Stage 2 construction activities, please call the NACE Civil Engineering Pty Ltd site engineer, Clinton Woods on 0412 490 602, or the pro- ject supervisor, Bob Meins on 0412 464 866. Changes to road conditions Motorists are advised to drive carefully throughout the construction area and also on the remain- ing section of gravel road as the road conditions are variable. Particular care should be taken in wet weather as the unsealed sections of the road can be slippery and suitable only for 4WD vehi- cles.
