He developed a strong personal style within the technique of using cameras that were usually fixed in place, mounted on heavy tripods and using large negatives, typically 4 x 5 inches in size. The dynamic qualities of photographs made this way came through their careful planning: the precise placement of the camera, and equally careful placement of the lighting sources, with people and objects also being arranged with an eye for the final effect.

    N&W Class J 611: The Spirit of Roanoke The “Queen of Steam” gets new bearings. First, background from the “Fireup611.org” and Wikipedia websites… No. 611 was one of fourteen Class ‘J’ passenger locomotives built for the Norfolk & Western Railway between 1941 and 1950 and the only one in existence today. The Norfolk and Western Railway's J class was a class of 4-8-4 streamlined steam locomotives built by the railway's own Roanoke Shops located in Roanoke, Virginia. The last units, 611-613, rolled out between May and July of 1950, marking them the last steam passenger locomotives built in the United States. The J class locomotives were used daily to pull such passenger trains as the Powhatan Arrow, the Pocahontas, and the Cavalier between Cincinnati, OH and Norfolk, VA. The J’s also pulled the Tennessean, the Pelican and the Birmingham Special between Monroe, Virginia, and Bristol, Tennessee. In the late 1950s, N&W began purchasing first generation diesel locomotives which proved to be cheaper in maintenance and fuel cost. In 1958 and 1959, the railroad ran several “Farewell To Steam” excursions with 611 pulling the last one in October 1959. While many of the locomotives went to the scrap lines, 611 was donated to the Roanoke Transportation Museum where it sat dormant for two decades. In 1981, Norfolk Southern president Robert Claytor sent 611 to the Norris Steam Shop in Birmingham for overhaul and 611 became the star of the Norfolk Southern steam program pulling excursions throughout the eastern United States. For twelve years she traversed the mainlines recreating the golden age of American railroading and inspiring a new generation of steam fans.

He said that when I discussed railroad issues, that I "spoke from the heart". He then asked me if I was interested in taking part in the yearly NS awards event held every March in Norfolk. Of course, I said yes, because I knew that NS pulls out the red carpet for this prestigious event. However it wasn't until February 2010 that I learned what my duties would be. I had been chosen to take the stage and announce all the safety award winners for the entire Maintenance of Way division. The event was held on March 9-10, 2010 at the Marriott Waterside Hotel in Norfolk. Considering the fact that Suzie had never seen the ocean, I decided to build a family vacation around this event. So we packed up the car and headed east until we ran out of land, and we exited into downtown Norfolk. The railroad provided us lodging for the first night, and I checked into the Sheraton Norfolk Waterfront on Tuesday March 9, 2010, grabbed a bite for lunch then headed across the street to the Marriott to register, pick up my name badge and itinerary, and find some familiar faces in a sea of employees.

Some steam featuring part of a 4501 run from Pittsburgh to Alexandria is included, too. Bob provides this biography. I was born in the Bronx, New York City. I have been married to my wife Ruthe since 1967. We are the proud parents of two wonderful daughters and four great grandsons. Ruthe and I met and married in Pittsburgh, PA, where she lived while I was in graduate school. We lived briefly in Pittsburgh and then in Columbus, OH, for almost three years before moving to Maryland. I spent most of my career as a Metallurgist/Materials Scientist with the U. S. Bureau of Mines managing metallurgy research programs. I have loved trains since my earliest memory. I took my first railroad photos in the mid 1950s as a teenager but did not really get serious about shooting until we moved to Maryland in 1971. Soon after moving I joined the Potomac Chapter, NRHS, which had many excellent photographers. I was privileged to learn much about photography and local railroading from them. I have had an opportunity to photograph trains in all 50 states; and in many foreign countries when my wife and I visited them. I look forward to sharing my WM program with the Blue Ridge Chapter.

    Appendix C NRV Rail History C1 BRIEF HISTORY OF PASSENGER RAIL IN THE NEW RIVER VALLEY Photo: Radford Heritage Foundation The New River Valley has a rich history of passenger rail service. The railroad reached what is now Radford in 1854, eventually providing a rail connection between Lynchburg and Bristol. Scheduled rail service on this line began in approximately 1856. The Norfolk & Western Railway’s extension line from Radford west to the coalfields, along the south shore of the New River, reached the Town of Narrows in 1882. The Virginian Railway, along the north shore of the New River, began operation in 1909. The Norfolk & Western’s passenger service offered a more fully developed menu of options, while the Virginian Railway offered limited passenger service. To serve the coal mines at Merrimac, the Virginia Anthracite Coal and Railway Company, built a branch rail line in the early 1900s that connected with the Norfolk & Western at Cambria, which is now part of Christiansburg. This line was eventually extended to Blacksburg with passenger service between Cambria and Blacksburg commencing in the fall of 1904. The new passenger rail service was a significant improvement over the largely unimproved roads in existence at that time. Owing to the berries that grew along the route, the line was affectionately referred to by locals as the “Huckleberry”. For many years, the Virginia Tech Corp of Cadets traveled to the annual VPI-VMI football game at Roanoke via passenger trains originating on the Huckleberry line. Norfolk & Western assumed ownership of the Huckleberry branch in 1912. Scheduled passenger service on the line ended in 1957.
