While Kalevala is the Fatherland of Heroes, Pohjaor Pohjola is the back country, Lapland and the North. The heroes of Kalevala seek wives from among the daughters of Pohjola, with varying degrees of success, since the normal state between the two was one of open hostility, particularly under the Lady of Pohjola, Louhi, protectress of the country. Czech Radio Symphony Orchestra (Bratislava) The Czech Radio Symphony Orchestra (Bratislava), the oldest symphonic ensemble in Slovakia, was founded in 1929 at the instance of Milos Ruppeldt and Oskar Nedbal, prominent personalities in the sphere of music. The orchestra was first conducted by the Prague conductor FrantiSek Dyk and in the course of the past fifty years of its existence has worked under the batons of several prominent Czech and Slovak conductors. Ondrej Lenard was appointed its conductor in 1970 and in 1977 its conductor-inchief. The orchestra has recently given a number of successful concerts both at home and abroad, in West and East Germany, Russia, Bulgaria, Denmark, France, Spain, Italy, and Great Britain. Kenneth Schermerhorn Kenneth Schermerhorn was appointed Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra in 1984. He is also Music Director of the Nashville Symphony Orchestra and Music Adviser to the White Plains Symphony in New York. Born in Schenectady, New York, he began his musical career as a trumpet-player,turning to conducting during his army service, when he conducted the united States Seventh Army ~~mphon~.-~fterstudying with Leonard Bernstein, Schermerhorn became Assistant Conductor of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra for the 19541960 season. From 1963 to 1968 he directed the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra with which he introduced the Sixth Sym~honyof Roger -. 7 - %ssions to the public.
