A Brief History of the MSO THE BIRTH OF AN ORCHESTRA T WAS A CHILLY JANUARY EVENING IN 1959, and members of the Board I of the Milwaukee Pops Orchestra were witnessing the climax of their most successful season to date. Six thousand and three hundred people crowded into the old Auditorium to watch the ensemble, led by a young conductor named Harry John Brown, perform in concert with a young Texan pianist named Van Cliburn. After ten years of ups and downs, the fledgling orchestra was experiencing the beginnings of stability. For more than a decade, under the baton of John Anello, the Milwaukee Pops Orchestra had grown and persevered. With the success of the 1958/59 season, the Directors — including President Stanley Williams, Judge Robert Landry, George Everitt and others — realized that they had come to a crossroads. In May of 1959, prior to the start of the 1959/60 season, the Board gathered in Judge Landry’s chambers, and the name of the ensemble was officially changed to Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. The Board immediately hired Milwaukee public relations man Robert S. Zigman as the first business 1 Harry John Brown is appointed the MSO’s manager. MICHAEL KUREK New World Records 80497 Nashville’s cultural landscape is richer than the pop-culture mythologists would suggest. The capital of Tennessee is indeed the capital of Country-Western music, as well as the home of the Grand Ole Opry, which opened its doors in 1925, and an employer of country-music players in the numerous studios that support its booming recording industry. And yes, the cowboy hats are there, but there are also academic mortarboards and ecclesiastical caps of various kinds. Vanderbilt University, a major research center founded by Commodore Vanderbilt in 1873, holds a high distinction among academic institutions in the South. Fisk University, founded in 1865, and whose Fisk Jubilee Singers first concertized outside Nashville in 1871 to raise construction funds for the new Negro college, has likewise maintained a high reputation. Nashville is the seat of major publishing houses for the Methodist and Baptist churches. There is a Catholic cathedral there as well, and there are museums, a symphony orchestra, an opera company, and a full-scale reproduction of the Parthenon. Composer Michael Kurek, whose music is on this disc, has what might be called a genetic attraction to this city. Kurek was born and raised in Nashville, and is now an associate professor of composition at Vanderbilt University. Like Nashville itself, he is cosmopolitan, fitting comfortably into the stimulating intellectual and cultural milieu characterized by the cultural organizations that typify most American cities. His mother was a commercial artist and, working in an impressionist style, illustrated a number of children’s books in addition to caring for her son and three daughters. -

Among these are three works specifically for the alto saxophone: Suite “Alla Barocco” for Alto Saxophone (2004), Monologue 3 for Alto Saxophone (2005), and Cantilena and Toccata for Alto Saxophone (2006). These three compositions portray common traits and represent Kreines’ unique compositional style. Aside from discussing Kreines’ musical background, this document explores these three works for alto saxophone from a historical perspective and includes a formal analysis and performance considerations for all movements of each composition. ii To Erin My soulmate; my best friend; my greatest supporter.
