For over 30 years, AQS has been the leading voice in quilting inspiration and advice, through a broad suite of products—magazines, books, live events, contests, workshops, online networks, patterns, fabrics, and catalogs. At AQS, we believe that with inspiration and advice, the creative individual can take their quilting projects beyond what even they had imagined. That is why inspiration is central to everything we do. The leading authors in quilting choose to publish with AQS; the best in artistry select AQS events to display their work; the newest quilters learn from the knowledge and inspiration of AQS members.

To the maximum extent of the law, your attendance and participation, including that of your children and minors accompanying you, in any AQS QuiltWeek workshops, lectures, or special events (paid for or not), is conditioned on your agreement to hereby indemnify American Quilter’s Society, its employees, volunteers, and contractors from and never to make any claim for injury, loss, or damage to you or your children and minors accompanying you, against American Quilter’s Society, its employees, volunteers, and contractors, caused by its very own negligence, strict liability, or for any other reason. From art to appliqué: The Art of Linda M. Poole by: Ann Hammel

From the moment Linda Poole held a pencil and paper, her world changed to a place where she could endlessly dream. She spent countless childhood hours drawing and then applying paints to make that world come alive. European influence

Linda is a first-generation American, and her nurturing European parents always encouraged her pursuits in any art form. Linda’s artistic talent flows naturally, inherited from gen- erations of artists on her father’s side; her grandfather, a notable impressionist artist, studied in France alongside Pablo Picasso, and his "St. George slaying the dragon" design is manhole cover art throughout Germany. Linda's dad, always her muse, was a Master Silversmith at Tiffany & Co and crafted 38 years of Super Bowl trophies. Her mother’s northern Italian family, owners of a trattoria in the Dolomite Mountains, is the source of Linda’s love of food, wine, cooking, and sewing.

“I am so grateful for the genes I inherited. After college, I worked in Manhattan for three years at the prestigious advertising agency BBDO in pre-computer days. I drew the storyboards for Pepsi, Hawaiian Punch, Mrs. Butterworth syrup, and Dial soap,” Linda said, adding that she attended night school for a certification in electro-mechanical drafting at the same time. Linda went on to open her own copyright, trademark, and patent illustration company.

The quiet pace of quilting

In the 80s, Linda was a crafter, making decorative wreaths, sewing bunnies, and covering frames and journals with fabric. She saw a sampler quilt top in a remnant shop near her home not far from Manhattan, walked around and studied it, and immediately decided to make one. She signed up on the spot for a six-week course on hand piecing the blocks.

Linda loved the entire quilting process in pre-rotary-cutter days. “It is all about the beginnings and about patiently letting the world be silent as attention is paid to the present moment. Whether it is a stitch, cutting out a piece of fabric, selecting just the right colors, mixing and blending ink and paints to make a new color—quietly seeing what you intended becoming some- thing real is so rewarding. It slows the heart rate; your mind is in a different place, not the place of everyday life.“

Although Linda still loves hand piecing and hand appliqué, she also dearly loves to mechanize those same tasks. As a BERNINA Artisan and a Handi Quilter Ambassador, she’s quite fond of machine sewing, too.

33 It started in Turkey…

Linda’s professional quilting career started in Turkey, where she was invited by the Minister of Culture to rep- resent America at their very first quilt show, “Peace with Quilt,” in 2000. After 21 years as the owner of her illus- tration company, she knew it was time to focus on being a quilting instructor. Her careers overlapped, and she needed to choose.

“I had been teaching appliqué in the 90s, and when I went to Turkey, my eyes opened wide with possibilities. AQS accepted my first book proposal within two weeks of submission. The heart won’t steer you wrong as long as you bring your brain!” Her quilt, Mediterranean Medallion, which appeared on the cover of her first book, Turkish Delights to Appliqué, is her favorite appliqué quilt. Linda taught intensively in Europe for many years, and she started to teach more and more in America—always with a hand appliqué project to take on the road.

More books followed. Bended Bias Appliqué was born from Linda’s love for adding swirls, stems, and weaving to her projects. Linda has always been a voracious reader, and Quilted Fairie Tales, an appliqué book based on fairy tales, grew from her desire to write chil- dren’s books with less grim (pun intended) endings.

“A few years later, something started to niggle at me. I had always wanted to introduce painting on fabric to my appliqué students, but would they accept that?” She had painted on fabric with inks and textile paints on many of her earlier quilts, but new ways to transfer ideas to fabric were becoming available. She wrote Painted Appliqué: A New Approach for those who wanted to try something new, and that book was the basis for her iquilt.com class, Artistic Painted Applique.

“My favorite painted quilt is Painted Mermaid. I have been raised with boats since I was a child, and the water is a big part of my life. My artistic side always dreams of what is below the surface of the ocean.”

Her latest book, Color by Design, is a coloring book full of whimsical medallions and intricate swirls.

Contact Linda at lindampoole.com for teaching opportunities, and follow Linda M. Poole - The Magic of Applique on Facebook. Inspiration and Design

Artistic inspiration might come from a walk through a local farmers' market, Sunday car rides in the country with her husband and her little corgi, sitting in the airport, or visiting foreign countries. Linda continues to be inspired by everyday life, taking plenty of photographs or sketching with her sketchpad, pencil, and watercolors anywhere she travels. She loves urban sketching with her iPad pro. With it, she sketches, draws, and paints in the traditional fashion by using her drafting skills for the layout, refining with linework, and then painting it in. “It is great for on-the- go ideas,” Linda says.

Linda loves to bring her design creations to fruition. She’s currently painting a lot and updating her surface design and fabric design portfolio. “A long time ago, I designed fabric, and some- thing tells me to start the process once again.”

“I am grateful every day that I get to do what I passionately love. I strive to be an instructor who encourages you, lets you see things in a new light, helps you resolve any insecurity, and is a springboard to creating your own twist on what you have learned.”

Linda lives happily with her husband, Ray Williams, and Corgi pup, Zoie, near Milford, Pennsylvania, a beautiful region in the northeastern part of the state. Together they share the passion of discov- ering the gifts of nature while hiking trails that lead to creeks, brooks, rivers, and lakes. Ray can be found with his fishing pole in hand, Linda by his side clicking away with her camera.

35 The Best of QuiltCon 2018 Sponsored by The Modern Quilt Guild presents the Best of QuiltCon 2018, a collection of modern quilts from QuiltCon, the guild’s annual worldwide conference and show. This inspiring exhibit showcases the best work of modern quilters today. Graphic and hip, these quilts represent the pinnacle of craftsmanship and design in today’s modern quilting movement. The MQG developed out of a thriving online community of modern quilters and their desire to start meeting in person. The founding guild was formed in Los Angeles in October of 2009. Through blogs and the Internet, word spread quickly of the fun they were having, and soon guilds started popping up everywhere. There are now more than 200 guilds around the world with members on six continents.

New Quilts From an Old Favorite: Bow Tie Sponsored by The National Quilt Museum One of the roles of a museum is to not only preserve the past, but to also link it to the present and future. This objective is why The National Quilt Museum created the New Quilts From an Old Favorite contest: to honor the heritage of quilt- making, as well as to recognize the innovation, creativity, and excellence of today’s quiltmakers. This contest challenges quiltmakers from around the world to create an original quilt based on a specific traditional block. The 2018 competition featured the traditional Bow Tie block.

37 Taiwan Art Quilt Society

The Taiwan Art Quilt Society (TAQS) is a nonprofit organization that promotes quilt art in Taiwan. This exhibit includes several large collaborative quilts made entirely by hand and based on natural and environmental themes, as well as individual quilts made by members of TAQS. Recurring subjects in the quilts relate to the island of Taiwan – its flowers, trees, and creatures of the ocean.
