    Methodist History, 27:4 (July 1989) BISHOP WILLIA.M TAYLOR AND METHODIST MISSION: A STUDY IN NINETEENTH CENTURY SOCIAL HISTORY DAVID BUNDY Part I: From Campmeeting Convert to International Evangelist The figure of William Taylor (1821-1902) is a recurring feature of the historiography of mission activity under the aegis of the Methodist Episcopal Church during the last half of the nineteenth century. Taylor was involved in missionary endeavors from 1849 when he was sent to California by Bishop Beverly Waugh until his retirement in 1896. He worked on six continents and was instrumental in the establishment of Methodist churches in Panama, Belize, Peru, Chile, Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, Zaire, and South India. He assisted the Wesleyan Methodists in Australia, South Africa and the Caribbean. During his missionary episcopacy, the struggling Methodist mission in Liberia was strengthened and expanded. Despite his frenetic and often quite successful efforts, relations with the Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church were anything but cordial. Methodist periodicals and Taylor's own publications record the continuous struggles to define and control the methods and results of missionary endeavor. Taylor and the Missionary Society viewed the con­ flict as related to missiology. It will be argued here that the conflict be­ tween Bishop William Taylor and the Methodist Missionary Society was not only a function of mission method and ecclesiological control; it was also related to the socio-religious structures ofTaylor's life and to the socio­ religious transitions within Methodism during the second half ofthe nine­ teenthcentury. Sources and Method The diaries, notebooks and collected correspondence of Bishop Taylor have not, in so far as I have been able to ascertain, survived.l Such cor­ respondence as has been preserved is scattered throughout th<fUnited States.

    Methodist History, 47:2 (January 2009) William Taylor in CHile: A MetHodist Missionary Case Study (1877-1903) PETER FEINMAN William Taylor (1821-1902) is not a name well-known today but in his prime he ranked with Henry Stanley and just below David Livingstone as a swashbuckling heroic missionary traveling to the four corners of the world. His missionary stints and evangelical campaigns took him to Africa, Australia, California, Ceylon, England, India, South Africa, and South America (1875- 1884).1 He has been called “American Methodism’s most traveled overseas missionary in the second half of the nineteenth century,” one who more than any other individual expanded the geographical frontiers of Methodism during this time, and who is “believed to have travelled the most miles and accomplished more in his time than anyone else in the nineteenth century.”2 As Asbury once had roamed the continental wilderness expanding the Methodist frontier, now Taylor pushed the geographical limits of American Methodism into areas far from America’s shores. Just as America was expanding economically, militar- ily, and diplomatically into the global arena, so too was Methodism led by its own warrior of light who proceeded outside the box. Methodist Perception of South America At first glace, South America offered many opportunities for missionary activity both by the Methodists and other Protestant denominations. An ex- cerpt from “The Church at Home and Abroad” in the Methodist Review of Missions described the situation as follows: “South America has been called, from a missionary point of view, the ‘neglected continent.’” Yet despite its size, population, proximity, and potential, South America did not receive the attention that “lands afar off” have received.

    “William Taylor, 'Taylor' Missionaries and Shifting Concepts of Holiness in Nineteenth Century Calls to Missionary Service” Dr. Douglas D. Tzan Wesley Theological Seminary The late nineteenth century saw a surge in evangelical interest in foreign missions. From 1860 to 1900, for example, the number of American missionary societies mushroomed from sixteen to ninety.1 Historians have offered several reasons for this growth of missionary enthusiasm. Sydney E. Ahlstrom argued that American Christians turned to foreign missions to “heal or hide” conflicts over the rise of historical criticism and evolutionary theory.2 William Hutchison claimed that missions of this period sought to offer “a moral equivalent for imperialism.”3 Such explanations fail to explain completely increased missionary interest and participation. Brian Stanley comes much closer to the mark by arguing that increased British evangelical mission activity in that period lay not in rising British imperial interests, but in the emergence of new varieties of holiness theology.4 As David Bebbington accurately noted, 1 William R.
