Virtual GBGB Awards 2020 In a year that has been anything but conventional, GBGB has confirmed that the stars of 2020 will be recognised at a unique and exceptional awards ceremony, held and broadcast virtually on the evening of Sunday 14th February at 6pm. While the current Covid-19 restrictions prevent greyhound racing fans and supporters of the sport coming together to celebrate its stars in person, the 2020 GBGB Awards will have no less significance in ensuring that their achievements can and will still be recognised. Categories will remain the same as in previous years. This includes recognising 2020's canine stars across each of the different racing disciplines, together with the best of British breeding, and those awards celebrating the incredible people behind our sport. Details of how to register for this exciting event will be published soon. CALENDAR 1 NOMINATE YOUR 2020 BAGS KENNELHAND OF THE YEAR The Greyhound Board of Great Britain (GBGB) is calling for nominations for the 2020 BAGS Kennelhand of the Year Award. This prestigious award is presented to one outstanding kennelhand who shows impressive commitment to their work and who goes above and beyond to provide the highest standards of care to the greyhounds in their charge. The winning kennelhand will win £500 and a special trophy in recognition of their dedication and exceptional efforts. To submit a nomination for this year’s award, please email the name of your nominee, a brief description of why you think they should win and your own contact details to awards@ 2019 BAGS Kennelhand of the Year Winner Hannah Prince receives her gbgb.org.uk with the subject line trophy from BAGS Chairman Dominic Ford (Photo: C Media) ‘Kennelhand of the Year 2020’. The deadline for nominations is Monday 18th January 2021. After this date, a panel comprising several industry experts will meet virtually to discuss each nomination and decide the winner of the sought-after title. Whilst the current Covid-19 restrictions prevent greyhound racing fans and supporters of the sport coming together to celebrate its stars in person, the 2020 GBGB Awards will still go ahead this year as part of an exciting virtual event. This will be held and broadcast online on the evening of Sunday 14th February 2021. Mark Bird, GBGB Managing Director, said: “This award is our annual opportunity to thank the kennelhands of our sport for their hard work and dedication to their role. Each day across our trainers’ residential kennels, our kennelhands are working tirelessly to care for their greyhounds, ensuring they bring out the best in them both on and off the track. “This year, in particular, kennelhands have played an invaluable role within trainers’ teams to keep owners updated and kennels running smoothly. I know how difficult this period has been for everyone so kennelhands across our sport should be proud of everything they have done in support of our greyhounds.” 2 VOL 13 NO 1 15 JANAURY 2021 GBGB MAINTAINS UKAS ACCREDITATION Following audits by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) during 2020, the Greyhound Board of Great Britain (GBGB) is pleased to announce that it has successfully maintained its UKAS accredited status for the inspection and licensing of racecourses. GBGB first achieved UKAS accreditation in 2010 and has consistently met the standards for licencing and certification services, guaranteeing high standards of greyhound welfare across all its licenced racecourses. GBGB is now building on this by seeking UKAS accreditation for the inspection and licencing of trainers’ residential kennels. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, all UKAS audits since March 2020 have been carried out remotely, with assessors and accredited bodies such as GBGB utilising virtual meeting software and secure file sharing applications to carry out what are usually office-based audits. Remote technology allowed UKAS technical assessors to view field inspections despite not being on site, to keep all participants safe and all processes Covid-secure. During their audit, UKAS were able to view both the practical and theoretical sides of track inspection and licensing to fully assess compliance with all clauses of the international standard ISO17065, against which GBGB is assessed. All elements of GBGB’s COVID-19 Operational Policy were also assessed and deemed “comprehensive” ensuring a “well managed return to racing”. Amanda Duplock, GBGB Quality Manager said: “2020 has obviously been a difficult year for all in so many ways, and businesses have had to quickly amend their practices to allow work to continue. With UKAS being a body that monitors quality, safety and effectiveness, it was essential for its assessments for take place to maintain confidence in the products and activities it accredits. “This presented unique challenges for UKAS and for GBGB around our two surveillance assessments this year. We were, however, able to hold what is usually a ‘Head Office’ audit remotely, allowing a thorough and detailed review of our documents, processes and procedures by UKAS. This year’s track inspection audit involved a UKAS inspector viewing a Stipendiary Steward in real time via a video feed as they carried out an annual inspection at a track, allowing everyone to comply with all safety measures. “It was a new experience for all GBGB staff involved, but it worked effectively and allowed us to demonstrate to UKAS that, despite the extraordinary circumstances of 2020, our inspection processes are continuing at the same consistently high standards.” 4 VOL 13 NO 1 15 JANAURY 2021 IMPORTANT NOTICES Complaints The Greyhound Board of Great Britain will receive complaints in confidence from anyone concerned about a possible breach of the Rules of Racing.     For immediate release July 7, 2014 TIMEFORM APPOINTED DISTRIBUTOR OF OFFICIAL BRITISH HORSERACING PRE-RACE DATA Racecourse Data Company (RDC) has announced that Timeform has been appointed a distributor of official British horseracing Pre-Race Data (PRD) up to the end of 2018. Timeform has been providing horse racing form and ratings, racecards, results, tips and betting advice since 1948. In the past few years Timeform has increased its output considerably so that data and content is now available at differing levels of sophistication. The contract sanctions the distribution of PRD – both domestically and overseas – to Timeform’s broad customer-bases, including newspapers, websites, TV and media businesses, mobile platforms, Pari-Mutuel operators, bookmakers, online betting companies, racing authorities and racecourses. RDC, a joint-venture comprised of 57 British racecourses, was assigned the PRD licence from Racing Enterprises Limited (REL), with effect from January 1, 2014 to 31 December 2018. Any income received by REL will be wholly invested in British horseracing. PRD is generated by Weatherbys and is the key component of information required to take a bet. It includes information on a racecard, such as final fields, owners, trainers, jockeys, weights, colours, draw and ratings. The deal means that Timeform joins PA and SIS, who both signed as distributors of official British horseracing PRD in May. Richard FitzGerald, Chief Executive of Racecourse Media Group and Tony Kelly, Managing Director of Arena Racing Company, who are both RDC Directors, said: “We are delighted that Timeform has signed with RDC. It means that nearly all those customers who received PRD through REL’s licensing process will continue to do so under RDC’s licensing.

    Early History of Thoroughbred Horses in Virginia (1730-1865) Old Capitol at Williamsburg with Guests shown on Horseback and in a Horse-drawn Carriage Virginia History Series #11-08 © 2008 First Horse Races in North America/Virginia (1665/1674) The first race-course in North America was built on the Salisbury Plains (now known as the Hempstead Plains) of Long Island, New York in 1665. The present site of Belmont Park is on the Western edge of the Hempstead Plains. In 1665, the first horse racing meet in North America was held at this race-course called “Newmarket” after the famous track in England. These early races were match events between two or three horses and were run in heats at a distance of 3 or 4 miles; a horse had to complete in at least two heats to be judged the winner. By the mid-18th century, single, "dash" races of a mile or so were the norm. Virginia's partnership with horses began back in 1610 with the arrival of the first horses to the Virginia colonies. Forward thinking Virginia colonists began to improve upon the speed of these short stocky horses by introducing some of the best early imports from England into their local bloodlines. Horse racing has always been popular in Virginia, especially during Colonial times when one-on-one matches took place down village streets, country lanes and across level pastures. Some historians claim that the first American Horse races were held near Richmond in Enrico County (now Henrico County), Virginia, in 1674. Miss Mini Mouse ($3.10) secured her berth in Australian greyhound racing’s blue riband event with a scintillating 2.25 length win in 29.71. The Group 2 South Australian Oaks winner will take her place in the final alongside litter­sister Betty’s Angel ($2.50F), who proved too strong in her heat to win in an impressive 29.77. Betty’s Angel will attempt to become the first greyhound since Sydney Dingaan in 1986 to complete the Sapphire Crown – Melbourne Cup double. Paul Bartolo narrowly missed out on a third Cup runner when the third member of his outstanding litter, Leprechaun Pace ($3.60F), was narrowly defeated by Group 1 Maturity Classic winner and Group 1 Sky Channel Topgun runner­up Train A Journey ($3.70). Despite beginning only fairly, Train A Journey railed strongly to win his heat in 29.79. An impressive trial last Saturday morning confirmed the Group 1 Maturity Classic winner had overcome any injury concerns following his fall in the Group 3 Silver Bullet, and is sure to be well supported in this week’s final. Underrated bitch Cash Up ($4.40) gave master trainer Graeme Bate his 19 th Cup finalist when she capitalised on the favourable box 1 to secure a comfortable five length win in 30.10.

The QR scanning code is also located at the kennels, Empress and Grace Stands and around the site • No Mingling - Owners can watch their dogs run but must obey Government guidelines and stick within their social bubble. Please ensure you stay in your groups of 6 and 2 meters apart from other groups. • As per GBGB guidelines Trainers & kennel hands must not mingle with owners and vice versa. These measures have been put in place to avoid a complete shutdown should a member of the public test positive for Covid-19. • Please do not come to the Racecourse if you feel or have Covid-19 symptoms, please stay at home. • Masks must be worn at all times. • There are separate areas on site for owners and trainers please follow the guidelines. • All visits are currently external areas only so please dress for the British weather! • All cars must be parked in the rear car park • Should an owner wish to see their dog run: 1. They must contact their trainer and give names and telephone numbers of those wishing to attend. 2. For syndicates 6 people per dog can attend.
