In the care of the Augustinians Cnr White & Wanganella Sts 2 King Street Parish Priest: Fr Dave Austin OSA 12th July 2020 [email protected] Parish Office: 9949 4455 15th Sunday Ordinary Time (yr A ) www.northharbourcatholic.org.au PASTOR’S PERSPECTIVE – ’Imagine… a Middle Class of Holiness!’ Dear Friends, Today’s Gospel of the Parable of the Sower helps us to reflect on our responsibilities as Church, as families, Parish and School Communities, and as Augustinians. God the Sower is almost wasteful in scattering the seeds wildly but then God’s love is like that. The parable could apply to the many areas of our lives where our openness to the Spirit varies – times when we are very receptive to God’s grace, times when we’re perhaps a bit shy, and times when we resist strongly. Life knocks us around – certainly our recent experience - but thankfully Jesus’ parables turn reality on its head. A seven-fold return was considered a good harvest but Jesus says otherwise, ‘Imagine… imagine the kind of seed that can produce up to a hundredfold in spite of the difficulties involved!’ Keeping our faith fresh is an engaging task at any time and we must ‘imagine’ and ’keep sowing’! Comments from parishioners ‘returning’ to our churches reflect relief and fresh energy that we can now gather again. Some of you may find spiritual support in a favourite ’app’. Pope Francis’ homilies and reflections can be found on the Vatican News App or the Click to Pray App. I find Laudate particularly helpful because it has a remarkable menu which includes the Prayer of the Church, the Daily Readings, prayers and devotions, the Order of Mass, the Catechism, 2 versions of the Bible, major Vatican documents from the Popes and Vatican II, and even the Code of Canon Law – in case I ever need it! Liturgy nourishes our faith! Even in the current ‘Ordinary Time’, for Christians the ordinary is rarely ordinary! Our Sunday journey is ‘ordered’, our ‘weekly Easter’, the most basic feast of our liturgical cycle.

  • How the Catholic Church Sexual Abuse Crisis Changed Private Law
CARDINAL SINS: HOW THE CATHOLIC CHURCH SEXUAL ABUSE CRISIS CHANGED PRIVATE LAW MAYO MORAN* ABSTRACT For several decades now, the unfolding of the Catholic Church sexual abuse crisis has been front-page news. It has wreaked havoc on hundreds of thousands of lives, cost the Church billions of dollars, and done irreparable harm to a once-revered institution. Along the way, it has also helped to transform the all- important private law of responsibility. When the crisis began to break in the early 1980s, the few survivors who sought legal redress faced a daunting array of obstacles. Limitations periods alone had the effect of barring almost all child sexual abuse claims. Immunities also helped to shield the Church. Private law itself was generally hostile to institutional liability, particularly where the harm resulted from the criminal act of an individual. All of that has changed. Among the catalysts for change within private law, the Catholic Church sex abuse crisis looms large. The scale of the crisis and the universal nature of the Church were certainly both important factors, but so too was the Church's response. From the initial impulse to cover up instances of abuse to choices made in the legal and political arenas, it appeared willing to do almost anything to protect itself. Yet the Church had traditionally bene®ted from special treatment precisely on the ground that it was not an ordinary, self-interested legal actor. The tension between the Church's mission and its approach to covering up abuse began to attract notice. Courts and legislators were prompted to act.

Social Mania: The Impact of Likes, Posts, and Swipes on Insurance Never before has such a small number of companies held such influence. Silicon Valley’s social media giants connect, inform, anger, and interest billions of people. How can we assess the impact of all those likes, posts, and swipes on the South Africa Neil Parkin Chief Pricing Actuary insurance markets? RGA explores the power, and peril, of several social trends: RGA South Africa Employee Social Endorsement In a Weber Shandwick/KRC Research global survey of 2,300 employees at mid-sized or Cliff Jooste Chief Underwriter larger companies, 50% said they post messages, pictures, or videos about an employer RGA South Africa often or from time-to-time. On the positive side, much of that content involves industry insights that can burnish Belinda Thorpe brand reputation, or workplace posts that can help recruit and retain associates. Research Head of Claims Africa and Middle East demonstrates that commentary and advice from employee experts is far more likely to RGA South Africa be considered authentic and trustworthy within social networks than similar posts from a faceless corporation. In the same survey, 39% of employees shared praise or positive comments online about an employer. Yet social media also presents risks: 16% of respondents in the survey reported sharing criticism or negative comments online and 14% said they posted something in social media about an employer that they regretted. A poorly considered post can generate public backlash and unwanted viral conversations. Furthermore, unauthorized and accidental disclosures of personal and confidential information can also be used in cybersecurity attacks.

  • And Now for Something Completely Different …
And Now for Something Completely Different … This week I was talking to a prospect in the marketing department of a company that I had been introduced to by a colleague. They are in the storage industry and are looking to make a big splash by flooding their “message” out to end users, resellers, and analysts. I was told that they had a very well developed content stable so they may not need the full range of DCIG services but that introducing my company to them could prove beneficial. The ensuing conversation reminded very much me of one of my favorite Monty Python’s Flying Circus show sketches; The Cheese Shop sketch. (Cue the Bouzouki music) Me: So you are trying to get the message out into the hands of end users looking to make a buying decision right? So you probably have some Case Studies to share with them? Prospect: No, not today. Me: Ok, then do you have any White papers that you are able to put into the hands of their hands so that they can look at your technical benefits in a detailed manner? Prospect: Afraid we are fresh out. Me: Webinars? Prospect: No Me: Executive white papers? Prospect: No Me: Product Evaluations Prospect: We had one coming, but the truck broke down. Me: How about blogs? Certainly you must have blogs? Prospect: No Me: Product spec sheets? Prospect: Oh yes…! We have those. Me: Super, we can derive content from them and a briefing with your team, can we get some of them to start with? Prospect: Well, they are kind of runny… Me: Oh that’s OK, we like them runny! We can tighten them up for you and deliver them in a way that resonates with your prospective clients.

  • A Successful Provocation for a Pluralistic Global Society. The
POLITICS & SOCIETY BRIEFING PAPER A successful provocation for a pluralistic global society The encyclical Laudato Si’ – A Magna Carta of integral ecology as a reaction to humanity’s self-destructive course Christoph Bals A successful provocation for a pluralistic global society GERMANWATCH Brief Summary This background paper explores the potential relevance within a pluralistic society of the important encyclical Laudato Si’ issued by Pope Francis in June 2015. It considers whether the encyclical documents a reflected faith that accepts the primacy of science in secular knowledge as well as the primacy of democratically elected governments, human dignity, and human rights in the political sphere. Laudato Si’ presents a paradigm shift from the im- age of the dominion of mankind over the rest of creation to universal fraternity with even weak and marginalised people as well as fellow beings threatened with mass extinction. The Pope carefully double codes the paradigm shift in scientific and theological terms. On this basis, the background paper explores whether this encyclical could provide new stimuli with- in a pluralistic society. The Pope presents it as a counter-strategy to strictly utilitarian ap- proaches, in which people experiencing social exclusion – the weak members of the ecologi- cal environment – are threaten to slip through the net. The encyclical therefore calls for the protection of common goods such as the environment and the climate and insists on finan- cial commitment for those affected by climate change. The background paper concludes with a discussion of whether religion can help to motivate the necessary collaborative action in a pluralistic society or what functional equivalents for this task might look like.
