A dissertation by Daniella Zsupan-Jerome Director: Jane Regan, PhD ABSTRACT Internet-mediated communication is undoubtedly shaping our culture, especially the way we access, gain, produce, share and understand information. The Internet, a vast resource of content is also taking form as a social communication network, where online content mediates the presence of people animating this network, who are accessing, contributing to, sharing and connecting over information. This movement toward the social web has significant implications for the way we go about communicating, sharing knowledge and making meaning as a whole, giving way to an overall more participatory culture, both on and offline. Commissioned to go and proclaim the Good News to the world, the Church continues to hold the communication of the faith as one of its essential tasks. This cultural shift in communication thus demands the attention the Church, presenting new opportunities and challenges for its evangelizing mission, while inviting a greater dialogue between evangelizing faith and digital culture. This dissertation engages the Church in this dialogue, focusing especially on what the present cultural shift wrought by Internet-mediated communication may mean for the theological foundations of communication in divine revelation, and the practice of the transmission of revelation in the context of the catechetical ministry. The dissertation offers a theological and ministerial foundation for exploring Internet-mediated communication, and the ways it may continue to evolve and shape our culture. To narrow in scope my investigation of the Church’s dialogue with Internet-mediated communication, the dissertation approaches the Church’s evangelizing mission as an expression of the theology of revelation concretely exemplified in catechesis, the religious education process concerned with facilitating conversion to Jesus Christ. This process of catechesis fueled by the theology of revelation encounters the socio-cultural phenomenon of Internet-mediated communication as its context. For the greater dialogue between the evangelizing faith and digital culture, all three of these elements, the theology, the ministerial process and the socio- cultural context receive careful analysis. After exploring each of these three constitutive elements, the dissertation suggests new directions and possibilities for revelation and catechesis in light of this dialogue. Chapter I introduces Internet-mediated communication and describes its relevance both from an ecclesial and socio-cultural perspective, focusing especially on the Church’s clear intention to take social communications media seriously, as articulated through a series of ecclesial documents. Chapter II investigates the theology of revelation and Chapter III examines catechesis, and both of these chapters highlight the particular dynamic of communication operative in both revelation and catechesis as one that emphasizes both relational presence and informational content. Chapter IV on Internet-mediated communication also continues to address this dynamic of communication, offering both revelation and catechesis a new model for integrating the relational and the informational in one process of communication. Chapter V concludes the dissertation by exploring the theological and ministerial implications of this integrated model of communication that the Internet as social network offers, while suggesting new directions especially for the practice of catechesis.     1 ‘Inter Mirifica’ after 40 Years Franz-Josef Eilers, svd The Decree on Social Communication of Vatican II Inter Mirifica received the biggest number of “no” votes in the final voting for any council document. This was probably due to the fact that the text was heavily criticized by communications people and some council fathers even tried a campaign at the entrance to Saint Peter’s Basilica to stop it. The original proposal for the document had 114 paragraphs which were reduced to a skeleton of now 24 paragraphs only, with some basic considerations. I. After 40 years, Inter Mirifica appears in several ways different from those days. Despite its history, the document now looks rather like the starting “shot” for more professional considerations. The Pastoral instruction, Communio et Progressio, is still considered the best document on church and social communication even beyond the Catholic Church. The bishops rightly felt that they were not fully competent for a professional document which later was confirmed by the short three-day council discussions (23-27 Nov 1962) on the text. Most Episcopal interventions of those days reflect a very rudimentary background on social communication, to say the least. Communio et Progressio, on the other hand, went through different stages of reconstruction and rewriting even in different languages in the course of seven years till it finally was published. Without the happenings around Inter Mirifica and a special mandate for the pastoral instruction (IM 23), Communio et Progressio would not exist. God the Sower is almost wasteful in scattering the seeds wildly but then God’s love is like that. The parable could apply to the many areas of our lives where our openness to the Spirit varies – times when we are very receptive to God’s grace, times when we’re perhaps a bit shy, and times when we resist strongly. Life knocks us around – certainly our recent experience - but thankfully Jesus’ parables turn reality on its head. A seven-fold return was considered a good harvest but Jesus says otherwise, ‘Imagine… imagine the kind of seed that can produce up to a hundredfold in spite of the difficulties involved!’ Keeping our faith fresh is an engaging task at any time and we must ‘imagine’ and ’keep sowing’! Liturgy nourishes our faith! Even in the current ‘Ordinary Time’, for Christians the ordinary is rarely ordinary! Our Sunday journey is ‘ordered’, our ‘weekly Easter’, the most basic feast of our liturgical cycle.

    CARDINAL SINS: HOW THE CATHOLIC CHURCH SEXUAL ABUSE CRISIS CHANGED PRIVATE LAW MAYO MORAN* ABSTRACT For several decades now, the unfolding of the Catholic Church sexual abuse crisis has been front-page news. It has wreaked havoc on hundreds of thousands of lives, cost the Church billions of dollars, and done irreparable harm to a once-revered institution. Along the way, it has also helped to transform the all- important private law of responsibility. When the crisis began to break in the early 1980s, the few survivors who sought legal redress faced a daunting array of obstacles. Limitations periods alone had the effect of barring almost all child sexual abuse claims. Immunities also helped to shield the Church. Private law itself was generally hostile to institutional liability, particularly where the harm resulted from the criminal act of an individual. All of that has changed. Among the catalysts for change within private law, the Catholic Church sex abuse crisis looms large. The scale of the crisis and the universal nature of the Church were certainly both important factors, but so too was the Church's response. From the initial impulse to cover up instances of abuse to choices made in the legal and political arenas, it appeared willing to do almost anything to protect itself. Yet the Church had traditionally bene®ted from special treatment precisely on the ground that it was not an ordinary, self-interested legal actor. The tension between the Church's mission and its approach to covering up abuse began to attract notice. Courts and legislators were prompted to act.

Concannon, Con for short, retired from his very successful business. I guess his business experience moved him a bit to the right, to conservatism—a conservative just to the right of the middle. Then there’s me. I think I’m pretty much a middle of the roader—except for my passion to save our planet by reducing our population before global warming, massive poverty and far-reaching famines decimate our humanity.
