As I near the end of my term as Commodore, I often now reflect on just what a club must offer in today. Our world is always changing and in our ‘time poor’ modern life, it is essential for all clubs to remain relevant and important in the life of its members and – most importantly – future members.

Clubs with a long history have fallen by the wayside. Bridging the gap between learning to sail and boat ownership

One of the greatest challenges for RQYS and sailing generally is to provide a means for bridging the gap for our youth or mature age sailors through to a time when they can look to personal boat ownership. Clearly our ‘Sail our Boats’ program is a key step in this direction. People regularly ask what activities are available for the 18 – 33 age range. We do offer a range of suitable activities and I do encourage our young members to get involved.

Young adult (and young at heart) pathways include: Opening Day Festival 2016 on the RQYS Rigging Lawn • Sail our Boats • Windsurfing • SUP • Crewing • Volunteering

Wine Down Friday with special host and sponsor Multihull Central

RQYS Windsurfing Precinct is regularly alive with activity on weekends

Encouraging and actively supporting all member boating endeavours

Beyond the areas that I have already discussed, the growth of our Sail and Power Cruising groups is very significant. The basis for this growth is, of course, the boom in ‘empty nesters’ who are buying cruising boats - and wish to cruise in company. This is a world-wide trend and shows no sign of slowing. The challenge for yacht clubs is to remain relevant to this group, to understand their needs and provide suitable facilities, encouragement Family Easter Fun Day 2017 and support.

This year we have seen many of our members not just cruise the bay or even the Queensland coast, but have ventured further afield to cruise the South Pacific or circumnavigate Tasmania. Fantastic stuff!

RQYS is on the right cultural track by encouraging lifetime participation; through developing youth, facilitating family and women’s participation, finding accessible pathways to on water activities to retain engagement and of course, by providing world class facilities for our existing boating Our emerging female sailors and RQYS Coach members. Brady Lowe representing women in the sport at International Women’s Day 2017 www.rqys.com.au Mainsheet 5 General Manager’s Update from General Manager Shawn Ket

Reflecting on the 2016/2017 year (our Financial Year ends at April 30), the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron continues to build on the successes of last year; moving from strength to strength across all business units, but especially in key areas such as membership, sailing and cruising, sailing academy, marina and member services.

Notably, we have outdone last year’s historic best-ever records to again achieve our most successful year in membership acquisition and retention as well as achieving record sailing academy enrolments and growth in the Junior and Youth sailing fleets. Optimist Green and Intermediate Racing have provided sailors with an accessible pathway for progression into other Youth fleets like the and Laser 4.7; all of which are growing by the month and are supported by our Coaching staff and dedicated members.

We have also enjoyed strong membership growth across all age brackets in the last 24 months. The graph below should be considered in conjunction with our Sailing Academy Enrolment statistics, wherein we expect that in the future, with appropriate strategy and planning, the exceptional growth in participation will translate into growth in our junior and young adult membership categories. This approach, we trust, will address our key area of work for the coming year which now is to find a solution to on-water accessibility for non-boat-owning young adults, particularly in the 18 - 33 year age bracket.

6 Mainsheet Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron Winter 2017 RQYS at the end of financial year was some 4100 members strong, seeing an increase of almost 1000 members in the last two years. Equally exceptional is that 76% of these members belong to an on-water category and are actively participating in the sport. This shows that our commitment to encouraging all members to participate in the sport of yachting, and to providing accessible and affordable pathways to getting out on the water, is proving a success.

One of the ways we are addressing the 18 - 33 non-boat- owner participation rates is through our ‘Come Sail Our Boats’ membership program. We now have approximately 50 members and their families who have taken up the option to learn and subsequently sail on our two Corsair Pulse 600s or six Elliott 6s. Crewing opportunities during WAGS and with our Division Yacht fleets are also available to our members who are interested in the competitive elements of the sport. This has been a fantastic initiative which has allowed both new and existing members to sail regularly despite not yet owning their own boat. We invite all members, their families and friends to take advantage of this program. We also thank our sponsors Multihull Central for making this program possible.

Financials

Continuous improvement has been a hallmark of the last few years of operational performance at RQYS. This has been underpinned by the financial performance of the business. EBITDA, the measure of our company’s operating performance, shows solid and improving results. This allows us to fund major capital projects such as our Windsurfing Precinct, our 2017/18 Sports Amenities building, fuel wharf upgrade and new RIB replacement program as well as maintain our assets through very healthy cash generation, again improving yearly.

EBITDA is the way to evaluate a company’s performance without having to factor in financing decisions, accounting decisions or tax environments.

As we move into our 2017/2018 year, we look forward to another challenging but rewarding year at the RQYS; with a particular focus on our Manly Summer of Sailing program which will see over 5,000 competitors, supporters, spectators and guests visit our Squadron. It’s never been a better time to belong . . . to the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron.

www.rqys.com.au Mainsheet 7 SAILING REPORT: 132nd Sailing Season 2016/2017 BY BRADY LOWE | SAILING MANAGER

The 2016/2017 Season for the Royal Queensland Yacht Also notable over the last season in the Junior and Youth Squadron was another one of growth, both in entrants space has been Blake Wilson, a young sailor who has and in classes. We have seen a newly formed Green spent much of the last season travelling Europe with his and Intermediate Fleet for Optimist Racing on Saturday family, competing in a number of National Championships mornings, a growing fleet of Flying 11s, and a strong and having several regatta wins on the European Junior resurgence of the 29er class at the Squadron with half Circuit. To Blake’s credit he also jumped in a wide variety a dozen boats racing on the Northern Course by the of boats that haven’t found their way to Australia, including conclusion of the Season. competing at the RSFeva class nationals and placing solidly in the Gold Fleet at that event. The Etchells Fleet too showed steady growth through the year with the core group of hardened veterans These exceptional results underpin the hard work of many increasingly being joined by more new owners, showing parents and coaches who have taken part in numerous promising signs for a powerful club fleet leading into the regattas around the country, but, and more importantly, 2018 World Championship. have become increasingly involved in active training programs at the club. With sailors on their bikes in the early morning, at the Gym, and then on the water in the afternoons, the future looks bright for young athletes at RQYS.

The two primary YouthSquad classes – the Flying 11 and the Laser 4.7 – have seen growing numbers on the start line and at regattas. This has been underlined by RQYouthSquad sailors taking home much of the silverware from Queensland Championships in their various classes.

The list of seasons prize winners shows some real strength in Youth Sailing at the Squadron. Over 30 sailors competed in Adelaide over the summer as part of the various class Nationals and the Australian Youth Championship. A great result came from Kristen Wadley, a member from Tinaroo who travels to RQ to train and compete as part of the RQYouthSquad, who was Australian Women’s 4.7 Champion.

In the Senior classes the growing trend would seem to indicate less weekly participation, but a growth in the overall numbers of persons signing up to go racing here at RQYS. Laser, Hobie, VXOne, Sabre, and Laser fleets all have large followings in membership, although with sailors taking part in less week to week activity on the Southern and Northern Courses.

This aligns with many of the global trends in sport, and it’s interesting to note that the Regatta calendar for the Squadron is growing more and more; especially with classes like the 29er, Laser, Sabre, VXone, Foiling Moth, Nacra and Flying 11 all scheduling regattas at the Squadron over the next 12 months.

I just wanted to say that I’m incredibly humbled to have It’s nice to have my hard work acknowledged by the won the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron Yachtsman Squadron, I have also been working a lot with the younger of the Year Award. It’s such a privilege and an honour sailors of the Squadron throughout the past year and I to be able to nominated, let alone to win. I remember hope to encourage them to do their best and hope to be three years ago when Joey Newton won for winning a good role model. the America’s Cup in 2013, and to go on a list like that is something pretty special. Receiving this award has certainly given me some extra motivation especially coming out of a back injury. In terms For me, the last 12 months have been pretty hectic, and of the coming season I was planning to go to world’s in a very busy period; with the Olympic Qualifications, August but am no longer able to do so because of my which was obviously stressful, followed by the Olympics back. So the focus now is starting to get back into routine in Rio. The Olympics in Rio were obviously a bit of mixed and to train hard for the coming Laser Nationals at RQ. emotions. It was fantastic to compete, but everyone who knows me knows that I don’t go anywhere to compete or I’d definitely like to thank Mum and Dad especially, for the just race – I go to win. So that’s really fuelled the fire for amount of times they’ve dropped me to the yacht club or Tokyo 2020; and Gold at the next Olympics is still on the to the gym, or driven me long distances to get to a regatta, forefront of my mind. I certainly would not be the sailor I am today without them.

In saying that, in the last few months since the Olympics Also to my coaches Brady Lowe, Ash Brunning and Danny I’ve signed with Artemis Racing for the America’s Cup Fuller for all the hours that they’ve spent coaching me and here we are in Bermuda currently, with the Louis over the years. The other sailors have also played a huge Voutin series underway. It’s been fantastic to be part of role in my sailing career, especially Squadron sailors, Tom such a special team and to race here at the America’s Needham and Annie Eastgate, two people that I train with Cup – great experience. I think it bodes well for sailing regularly during the week. into the future and I’m incredibly proud to represent Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron on the world stage – both at the America’s Cup and at the Olympics.

So I’m going to keep trying to do you guys proud and I just want to say thank you very much to everybody for all their support again.

18 Mainsheet Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron Winter 2017 MOTORLINE CLUB MEMBER OF THE YEAR 2016 / 2017 DAVID LANE

Our 2017 Club Member of the Year has over many years contributed in many ways to the running of the Squadron. He has held a number of Committee positions and is a long term on-water patrol vessel skipper. He is often sought out for his professional advice within the different departments of the Squadron and is always happy to help wherever he can. When there are extraordinary events and volunteers are needed he will happily jump in and give 150% to the project whatever that may be. RQYS Club Member of the Year 2017 David Lane & Commodore Ian Threlfall

An Interview with RQYS Club Member of the Year 2017 David ‘Shady’ Lane

Were you expecting to win club member of the year? No. It was totally surprising, unexpected and overwhelming.

What do you do at RQYS? You see the thing is, I’ve been a member here since 1983. But as I mentioned on the Saturday night, the real sailor in the family is my wife. Her career in sailing in Queensland is quite interesting. She’s a past honorary treasurer of Yachting Queensland and Wynnum Manly Yacht Club and she’s a life member of the Sail Training Association. So, she’s done Hobarts and all the good stuff. I always go somewhere else. When she went to Antarctica, I went to Melbourne. The thing being is that I’m a member here by default. But even before I joined, there were quite a few of my mates from university in the ‘60s who were members – Past Commodore Tony Love and Ray Turner. I’ve always been involved on-water, but I have also been David Lane & his wife Lynette members of three committees here: Finance, Membership and House. But there was a hiatus of about nearly 8 or 10 years when I just concentrated on coming down, enjoying myself and being a volunteer. I’m a patrol boat skipper and I lay courses.

I do get seasick, so I don’t go on a boat where I have to moor for a long period of time. I can’t do much about it.

I was on Finance Committee from 1999 to 2007; then I was requested to nominate for House Committee in 2013; then I was on Membership Committee, where I am now. One thing that I do for the Squadron and have done for a long time is provide advice to the Squadron on Management Advisory and the such. If the Squadron requires assistance in recruiting, I’m there.

What is your fondest memory of RQ Is there anything you wish more people knew about RQ? It’s the being amongst friends and the involvement. There are a few. I still believe we are one of the best kept Seeing Championships up front, being congratulated as secrets in Brisbane. Part of me says that’s good because a group or running World Championships. It’s a win win. I think I’m in illustrious company and a lot of them I’ve known for I’d encourage every member here to get involved. Anything a long time and now I think that the Squadron thinks that you can do. Anyone who says they’d like to get involved I’m one of them and that’s fantastic. we will find something for you. This club can’t operate without the support of its members and volunteers. I get more fun out of the Squadron when I give. I tell members regardless of their background, let it be known what you can do and what you’re interested in because somewhere down the line someone will offer you an opportunity. I just get involved with things which are difficult to explain. The classic case is that I’m helping with the History of the Squadron. There’s many other members they could have asked to help them but they chose me and I feel honoured for that. Sometimes I think I spend a bit too much time at the Squadron. Meeting new members who are mainly social members, they’ve made the decision to come here. I’m one of these people who believe we should make them feel welcome. Because we can’t survive without any members, we need members and we have to maintain membership. And the thing is if I expend an hour or half an hour taking them for a walk and talking about the history and they get some benefit out of it, it’s fine. The 2017 Musto Queensland Youth Week so over 250 competitors from all over the country converge for another year on the Squadron. With light conditions always on the menu at this time of year, it does offer a chance to escape the winter cold of the southern states, and catch up with friends as well as often being the first regatta for many sailors in new classes and with new crews. This year the Squadron itself has its strongest representation to date, with nearly 90 members competing in the competition, demonstrating the increasing prominence RQYS has on the National youth sailing scene. The regatta featured a four-day program, but unfortunately Day 3 was spent on the rigging lawn for most as the breeze came to play only on the first and last, and a lucky single race worthy breeze on Day 2. Nonetheless all competitors enjoyed themselves and renewed friendships and got their bearings before many would return for multiple weeks over the summer as part of the Manly Summer of Sail event.

This coming summer season, the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron (RQYS) will host or co-host seven major national sailing events involving more than 5,750 sailors and attendees over 23 days.

Individuals are anticipated to stay between four and seven nights, participating in not only their respective sailing competitions, but also engaging local tourist activities and frequenting local businesses. Considering the average daily spend of a visitor in conjunction with our projections of dates and attendee numbers for the Manly Summer of Sailing, we expect that the economic value to the community will be in the range of $5.5 million.

Aligning with the principles of ’s Department of National Parks, Sport and Racing as well as the Advancing Tourism 2016-20 initiative, the RQYS believes that together we can contribute to the growth and improvement of quality state and national events, invest in fundamental infrastructure and accessibility projects, and build our business capability to the benefit of the sporting and tourism industries.

RQYS General Manager Shawn Ket said: “The Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron aspires to replicate here in Manly, Brisbane the vigour and dynamism of the Geelong Victoria Sailing Regatta & Community Festival: The Festival of Sails. The Festival of Sails is an ideal example of how the unification of sport and community can be mutually beneficial to local, state and national sport and tourism. We consequently see incredible opportunity for the Brisbane, Queensland and Australian communities and economies to support the RQYS in hosting the Manly Summer of Sailing this December / January.”

The RQYS has identified a number of desirable improvement and infrastructure works to ensure that the maximum value to sport and tourism is received from this event, and these have been suggested to government, including: • Semi-permanent demountable amenities for competitors and guests • Observation deck & regatta management centre upgrades to existing viewing platform • Floating, retractable poly-dock on Eastern Beach for improved on-water accessibility • Safety access ramp over rock wall between RQYS facility and shore • Grass and lawn improvements for public verge • Relocation of RQYS boundary fence backward to create better access

Chris took some Sail the Bay in May Series? time to share his thougths with the Editor: I think it’s good because in the past we really haven’t had a lot over winter. We’ll be taking the boat out of the How was the Commodore’s Ocean Classic Cup? water after Canaipa, it’ll have some work done on it. My It was an overall successful event. I think it was good that wife gets to have an overseas holiday because she says we had a night race in it, because the only other time we I spend too much on my boat! Then by the time we come have anything competitive at night is the Kingfisher series back, we’ll be getting the boat ready for the Bsirbane to and then we have nights at sea in the Brisbane to Keppel. Keppel Tropical Yacht Race so this series is timed well So, this event is a really good shake-down for that. leading into winter.

What is it about night racing that makes it different to One of the things I would like to promote is that the any other type of competitive event? Enclave Sail the Bay in May Series is open to other clubs. With night racing, safety is the main concern. If people fall It’s not just restricted to RQ and we should be looking at over at night, it’s hard to find them. So, it’s very important getting the other clubs to participate. Quest joined us for that the safety aspect of it is really adhered to very the first event, they’re a Gold Coast boat. But they had strictly. Everybody has to wear their PFDs and you have their boat up here having some work done it, they had to to be tethered on at all times. That’s a discipline which go around the outside to get home so thought ‘why not do is sometimes hard for sailors to wear, people become the race up’. But they were the only outsiders so to speak, complacent, we need to make sure it doesn’t happen so it would be good if next year we could encourage because the last thing we want is someone going over participation from other clubs in the Bay, Mooloolaba and the side and then us trying to find them in the dark. our friends down at Southport.

When did you know you’d won the Cup? What’s next for yourself and Ragtime? We didn’t know on the Saturday that we’d won. We got in The next challenge for ‘Ragtime’ will be the Kepple Race, about half past one and drank rum until just past the sun we won it years ago so we want to have another crack at coming up. We knew on the Sunday because we were so it. I think it was 2014 we won it, and last year we had to pull far ahead. On Saturday we were second across the line out because we ripped our mainsail off Caloundra... and to ‘Quest’ who were about seven or eight minutes in front so we have some unfinished business. of us. But they didn’t sail on Sunday because they were taking the boat back to the Gold Coast. We had Electra, ‘Matrix’ and Georgia Express directly behind us. Georgia was the one we were really chasing down, and it really came to the last run in from the fairway mark into Point Cartwright; and we just had a dream run. A lot of others had problems with spinnakers and seasickness.

Seasickness can seriously affect your performance. Especially when you have a couple of people down, you have to keep an eye on them and make sure they’re hydrated, drinking water. Then they’re just not on deck, which is just a nuisance because everyone else has to pull their weight.

On the way back we left at about 9 o’clock in the morning. It was an easier race back, we had about 15 to 18 knots all day which really suited us. We broke away at the start and we were first across the line. So we knew we’d won that one. On Friday night we were second across the line, second on IRC and we were third on handicap. On Sunday we were first across the line, first on IRC and first on handicap, so that was our good day.

44 Mainsheet Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron Winter 2017 ENCLAVE SAIL THE BAY IN MAY: Canaipa Cup BY ROD JOHANNESSEN The 2017 Canaipa Cup was held in late May. There were 30 competitors - one of the largest fleets in an RQYS Division Yacht event in recent times - with entries from RQYS as well as other yacht clubs around Brisbane.

Light conditions were a feature of racing on both the Saturday and Sunday, with the breeze typically less than 10 knots. The start of racing on Saturday was delayed while the starters waited for the breeze to build enough to get the race underway. On the Saturday a large group of yachts parked up just north of the Cleveland Yellow mark.

Another feature was the number of yachts who found the bottom of Moreton Bay on both days. A popular topic of discussion on the Division Yacht Racing and WAGS facebook page the following week. A few skippers had to resort to using their engines to get off and then withdraw from the race to comply with the rules of racing including, on the Saturday, the author of this article.

A highlight of the week-end was the efforts of Kevin Ball, the caretaker at RQYS Canaipa, and his team who prepared a delicious roast dinner for 100 hungry crew on the Saturday night and then backed up to prepare a good hangover curing breakfast the next day. If you have not been to Canaipa recently, get on down there as the grounds are looking great, although the pool will be a bit chilly.

The overall results for the weekend were: In PHS Overall, first place went to Ian Vonk’s Anka’s Away from Wynnum Manly Yacht Club, with Jamie Renwick on Uppercut the first placed RQYS yacht and as a result, the winner of the Amity Replica Cup. In IRC Overall, first palce went to Kerisma skippered by David Rose. Followed by Roger Vinton’s Black Dog in second and Tam Faragher’s Kerumba in third. David Rose’s Kerisma was also the winner in Division 1 PHS. Roger Vinton’s new J-Boat Black Dog took second place followed by Barry Cuneo’s Beachball (skippered by John Warlow) in third. In Division 2 PHS, Colin Pollock’s Tap the Goose from the Trailor Sailer Club of Queensland took first. Ian Vonk’s Anka’s Away came in second, with Uppercut taking out third.

The Enclave Sail the Bay in May Regatta consisted of the second race of the Commodore’s Ocean Cup from Mooloolaba and the first race of the Canaipa Cup. The winner of the Regatta was Rod Johannessen from RQYS on Drake’s Prayer on PHS with Chris Morgan’s Ragtime taking the IRC honours for the event.

Unable to keep his own boat, he ended up as a crew member on a 16ft skiff at South Brisbane for the following four to five seasons. Due to work and family Dr. Reye was unable to sail much for the next 20 years from 1950 until the early ‘70s.

In the early ‘70s though, he acquired a very run-down Thorpe, about 12ft single cat-wing boat which he “sailed until it deteriorated also.” Upon buying a 1980s Hood23, Dr. Reye and his wife became members of RQYS in 1983 and in the years proceeding 1986 sailed it around Moreton Bay until his wife’s passing in 1990. When he was still working in Ipswich, Dr. Reye would come down on occasion to go for a sail… “As far as I can find out, from looking at my old logs, the first recorded time I went out on WAGS was in October of ’94. Whether I’ve done any more, any earlier, they’re not recorded.” www.rqys.com.au Mainsheet 47 Dr. Reye has found RQYS to be a great place to find eager “Very loose groups do form. We’ve had some that were not quite as more competitive boats, those people sort of hang around nice as others, but nearly always they’re very pleasant together too.” Fortunately, Dr. Reye assures that “there’s and happy to have been out.” never any serious squabbles.”

It would have been much the same then, it would have never been more than twice a year, there might have been a few times that I mightn’t have won any. Mostly about once a year.”

Being one of the oldest active members of RQYS comes with its challenges but even at 89 and 39 months, Dr. Reye doesn’t see himself furling the sails any time soon.

“Well it’s getting to the stage where, with my age and so forth, you think that any sort of long-term problems are going to make you stop sailing. It’s sort of been a bit touch and go over the last few years at times. Sometimes getting When asked about other sailors and newcomers he gets organised seems like too much hard work, but when I get to meet and interact with at WAGS, Dr. Reye explains that out there it’s always no problem; so, I keep going. There are some people who are do a lot of the Division Racing and so forth, and they come and – I can’t speak for them – but they seem to take it a bit more seriously than others. Valentine’s Day Cruise Trip Report Cruise Captains: Bryan & Mal, C’est la Vie

A cocktail with ingredients including preparation for Valentine’s Day, a Safety Scavenger Hunt, a Journey out of the Bay, a step back in time to the Way We Were/Are and a Nice Cruisy Weekend were the makings for the recent monthly cruises of the Sail Cruising Group.

The Valentine’s Day Cruise to Horseshoe provided the opportunity to see another side of the members when they wrote and recited a poem to their Skipper and/or First Mate. This was followed up with preparation of dessert back on their yacht for later in the evening. The judges of a romantic life awarded prizes on shore the next morning.

The Safety Scavenger Hunt mixed a 70s theme with a serious element. Craig and Kerry (Scarlett) invited the cruisers to hunt down their flares (trousers not distress), their Farah Fawcett hairdo and all things from the 70s and join them on the beach at Lucinda Bay. They also introduced a safety element when they posed the question;

If the skipper was not on board would the first mate be able to locate all the safety and other important equipment?

Skippers were allocated a boat that was not their own and aided by the First Mate of the boat there was a race to locate a range of safety and some novelty items aboard. The conclusion was satisfying with First Mates performing well. This was celebrated with dinner aboard Scarlett.

Easter Cruise Trip Report Cruise Captains: Glenn & Joanne, Simpatico

Easter saw ten of the Group enjoy an interesting yet challenging trip to Mooloolaba over Easter. The group cruised the westernmost course up and the easternmost course on return. A BBQ at the marina was enjoyed on the first night and a dinner out on the town the next. Sunday saw the fleet sail to Lucinda Bay for the traditional Easter egg hunt and an opportunity to show off their Easter Bonnets. Monday was a motor sail home across an unusually becalmed Moreton Bay... perhaps ideal after all that chocolate!

54 Mainsheet Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron Winter 2017 May Cruise Trip Report Cruise Captain: Peter & Bev, Spirit of Tommie

May saw the Cruisers ashore at Blakesleys Anchorage trying to put a name to the members in photos taken in their late teens or early 20s. Hence the cruise theme The Way We Were/Are. Jane (Curlew) had the most imagination to identify all of the members. The Sunday morning saw a gathering ashore for a walk to view the lake behind the Anchorage.

June Cruise Trip Report Cruise Captains: Geoff & Di, Stylapora

The weather dictated a change of venue for the June cruise. Di and Geoff’s (Stylapora) original plan was a cruise to Bribie Island’s Oyster Shed at Sandstone Point. They changed the plan to Canaipa. The theme for the weekend was “Nice and Cruisy”. Many of the group have been enjoying adventures over recent months. This cruise provided the opportunity to lay back and listen or speak of those adventures.

The Sail Cruising Group is starting another season of monthly cruises, learning opportunities and just sharing time on the water. If these are your interests and you are considering joining the Group visit our pages on the RQYS website for details

This great annual event is drawing closer as we prepare ourselves for a week of good company and great fun. This combined club cruise, of which RQYS has been affliated with since its inception, is centered about the southern half of Moreton Bay so is a great sheltered water event. With plenty of support available from fellow cruisers this means it is a great way to begin the cruising experience for those new to boating and those wishing to involve the whole family in boating.

These features combined with the option to have many of the dinners catered for at the various venues, along with shore ablution/shower facilities, means this cruise really ticks all the boxes for those with both larger and smaller vessels of any type.

This event coincides with the first week of the September school holidays and has a strong activity program for kids of all ages. This allows our junior cruisers to make new friends as well as catchup with those from previous years. That’s great news for those with children/grandchildren as it keeps them occupied, and along with the catered meals, allows more time for the boats chief executive to relax and enjoy the company of fellow cruisers.

If previous commitments mean that the full week is not possible, then there are options to only do part of the cruise.

Applications are online, and this, along with much more information regarding this years itinerary, theme nights, and eNews can all be found at www.interclubbaycruise. org.au . If you wish for more information on what to expect on this cruise then you can contact Steve (0428 869 491) onboard Gypsymariner who is one of the RQYS delegates for the Interclub Bay Cruise.

Have a look, sign up, and come join us for “Cruising the Seven Seas” on the 42nd Annual Interclub Bay Cruise.

They say you get what you pay for, and this couldn’t For clears left uncovered in the elements, expect 5 to 7 be more true when it comes to the choices in clear years life. Cover them and routinely clean and apply a enclosures for your boat. Sure, they will all keep you drier dedicated clear preserver product, and you can expect and warmer, but the true test of quality is in their clarity and even longer life. But fail to maintain them and you’ll life expectancy. drastically reduce their usable lifespan.

The do’s and don’t of maintaining clears:

• The key to getting a long life out of your clears is to keep the vinyl surface sealed from damaging environmental factors by washing and polishing at least monthly. Strataglass recommend weekly!

• Follow the manufacturer’s advice when maintaining clears as not all polishing and cleaning products are compatible.

The near perfect visibility from acrylic and polycarbonate clears is worth the extra expense. For glass like clarity, you can’t go past Acrylic or Polycarbonate. My preference being Acrylic because you can polish fine scratches out of this product. However, because they are both stiff materials which can’t be rolled up like common PVC clears, they won’t suit all applications.

When superstructure or similar obstructions won’t allow the panels to be hinged upwards and clipped flat to the ceiling when open, then use Strataglass or similar, or as I often do, a combination of both products. Strataglass with its special scratch and UV resistant coatings, and Dedicated clearners remove stubborn grime reasonably good clarity makes it the next best option to even after a soapywash as seen here Acrylic. • Do not rub or wipe salt crystals or dust off without water and soap. If you do the clears will scratch. Good visibility is so important at sea – and it’s not just about detecting barely visible current lines or working • Always wash gently before applying a protective birds in the distance when fishing, its vitally important for product. Use mild PH neutral soaps diluted in water spotting navigation beacons or avoiding debris and other with a soft cleaning mitten or sponge. boats to keep safe! • For applying the protective products like Vuplex or Imar polishes use two micro fibre towels. One to apply product and a second to buff.

• Don’t get sunscreen on the clears - it will permanently cloud the vinyl surface.

• Never use regular window cleaners, detergents, abrasives, petroleum based products, chemicals or alcohol on clears. They will break down the protectors in the vinyl.

• Do not use water repellent products. They can Neglect is the beginning of the end for clears. damage the external finish.

58 Mainsheet Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron Winter 2017 • If you can, it is best to leave clears in place so they hold their shape and size. Do not fold clears. It will increase the risk of cracks happening. Store clears flat or roll them up with an old white bed sheet between layers. Don’t store clears with anything on top because zippers and life jacket buckles can leave impressions in the vinyl.

• Never store clears when they are wet. It can make them go cloudy and white.

• Lubricate zippers and fasteners periodically using a clear silicone spray.

• Keep the flybridge area well ventilated to reduce mildew build up. If using bleach, make certain Teflon stitching was used – bleach will destroy cotton stitching. Rinse it off thoroughly!

So don’t sell yourself short on the quality and maintenance of your clears – as boaters we are so often surrounded by such natural beauty, life is way too short to look at it through poor clears!

Happy and safe boating.
