He is just as determined to do what he can to make that happen as he was when he first ran for office in 2004. “The issues are different than they were ten years ago”, says Buchanan, referring to the financial constraints that plague not only the city, but also the county, state and federal governments. However, he says, “I just can’t walk away. My inspiration is the town, the volunteers,”. Disney.com/Terabithia BRIDGE TO TERABITHIA PRODUCTION NOTES “Just close your eyes and keep your mind wide open.” PRODUCTION NOTES —Leslie Deep in the woods, far beyond the road, across a stream, lies a secret world only two people on Earth know about—a world brimming with fantastical creatures, glittering palaces and magical forests. This is Terabithia, where two young friends will discover how to rule their own kingdom, fight the forces of darkness and change their lives forever through the power of the imagination. From Walt Disney Pictures and Walden Media, the producers of “The Chronicles of Narnia,” and based on one of the most beloved novels of all time, comes an adventurous and moving tale that explores the wonders of friendship, family and fantasy: BRIDGE TO TERABITHIA. The story begins with Jess Aarons (JOSH HUTCHERSON), a young outsider on a quest to become the fastest kid in his school. But when the new girl in town, Leslie Burke (ANNASOPHIA ROBB), leaves Jess and everyone else in her dust, Jess’s frustration with her ultimately leads to them becoming fast friends. At first, it seems Jess and Leslie couldn’t be more different—she’s rich, he’s poor, she’s from the city, he’s from the country—but when Leslie begins to open up the world of imagination to Jess, they find they have something amazing to share: the kingdom of Terabithia, a realm of giants, ogres and other enchanted beings that can only be accessed by boldly swinging across a stream in the woods on a strand of rope.

  • Transformations in the Composition of American Jewish Households
Sylvia Barack Fishman Transformations in the Composition of American Jewish Households Introduction: Diverse Reasons for Common Behaviors Jewish societies around the world have certain commonalities, but also differ from each other in significant ways. Indeed, Jews who travel are often struck by attitudes, behaviors, and life circumstances among Jews in other countries that seem quite different from their own. This is true even when statistical “bottom lines” appear similar. Thus, although demographer Sergio Della Pergola documents that rising rates of intermarriage are observable to varying extents in Jewish communities worldwide,1 recent research shows that the reasons for intermarriage and the reactions to it can differ dramatically from place to place.2 From a public policy standpoint, it is important to recognize and analyze these differences. Effective strategies for dealing with intermarriage must be responsive not only to the fact that it occurs, but even more so to the circumstances that generate it. Endogamy and Exogamy Both Influenced by Wider Culture What are the specific contexts of contemporary intermarriage in the United States, and possible policy responses? As demonstrated by both the 1990 and 2000– 2001 National Jewish Population Surveys (NJPS), respectively conducted by the Council of Jewish Federations (CJF) and the United Jewish Communities (UJC), about half of recent marriages involving a Jew are marriages between a Jew and a non-Jew, which means that about one-third of recently married American Jews have married non-Jews.3 Although those concerned with Jewish cultural continuity often regard rising intermarriage rates as a specifically Jewish phenomenon, contemporary American Jewish attitudes, values, and behaviors clearly reveal the broader cultural influence.

  • Children's Online Reports About Educational and Informational Television Programs
Applied Developmental Psychology 22 (2001) 103±117 Children's online reports about educational and informational television programs Sandra L. Calvert*, Jennifer A. Kotler, William F. Murray, Edward Gonzales, Kristin Savoye, Phillip Hammack, Susan Weigert, Erin Shockey, Christine Paces, Melissa Friedman, Matthew Hammar Children and Media Project, Department of Psychology, Georgetown University, 37th & O Streets, N.W., Washington, DC 20057, USA Abstract The Children's Television Act of 1990 requires broadcasters to provide programming that furthers the development of children. The purpose of this study was to examine second through sixth grade children's learning from educational programs broadcast by affiliates of ABC, CBS, NBC, and FOX compared to PBS and Nickelodeon. Using the Internet as a data collection tool, 97 children in locations throughout the US reported their viewing patterns and their learning from educational and informational programs. Children viewed about four different educational and informational programs a week, primarily from Nickelodeon and PBS, with the educational strength of children's reports being comparable for the commercial vs. cable/PBS offerings. Children reported more social and emotional lessons and knowledge information lessons than cognitive skills lessons or physical well-being lessons. The results indicate that many children are learning lessons of social and informational value from programs mandated by the Children's Television Act. The implication is that governmental regulation of children's television results in measurable benefits for child viewers. D 2001 Elsevier Science Inc. All rights reserved.
