Cities and Towns classified by Population with variation for fifty years.

This Table sh~ws the urban population as now ascertained with that of the five previous censuses.

It will be noticed that while the urban population of other towns shows an increase, that of Jodiya shows decrease in the net variation since 1881. Probably the cause may be that Jodiya recognised at one time flourishing Bandar doing brisk business not only with other Indian Ports but with foreign countries like Africa etc., has not been able to hold its own on account of subsequent and rapid develop ment of British Ports. It is also not connected by Railway and as such bereft of modern Transport facilities its trade cannot prosper as it otherwise would.

Bhanvad and Jam Jodhpur both show an increase and as such they have been classified as towns. TABLE . IV· 8

15 ,TABLE VII IMPERIAL TABLE VII

Age, sex and civil condition.

This Table gIves information about the population of the State arranged according to age groups.

A glance at figures for the age group 0 to 5 will show that the number of females exceeds that of the males, but after that the number begins to fall off thus showing greater mortality amongst female children between the ages of 6 to 20. This may be due to the child marriage system which. however. is get tin g iess popular, day by day and there is every reason to believe that a marked change for the better will be noticed when the information regarding this matter will be collectEd during the next census.

It will also be noticed that at present even upto the tender age of 10. so many as 8. 559 persons [3441 boys and 5118 girls] are married, i. e, 11.6 and 18.2 percent respectively of their total population. Of course in old times this percentage was still higher. The following table shows the civil condition of the males and females upto the age of 10 years by different religions.
