Se presenta una lista actualizada de los escorpiones de Bolivia. Se rnencionan 24 especies (tres de elias con dudas) y una subespecie, perte­ necientes a las familias Bothriuridae, Buthidae e luridae. Para cadaespecie se proporciona una referencia bibliografica abreviada, as! como la n6mina com­ pleta de las local idades para las que ha sido citada. Brachistosternus ferrugineus (Thorell) y el genero andino Orobothriurus Maury (Bothriuridae) secitan por pri­ rnera vez para Bolivia. Sediscuten los motivos para excluir de la escorpiofauna boliviana a siete especies nominales citadas por autores previos. Se adjunta una lista de las localidades bolivianas, con sus coordenadas, donde se han recolectado escorpiones. PALABRAS CLAVE. Región Neotropical. Bolivia. Lista de especies. Scorpiones. Distribución. • ABSTRACT. Checklist of the Bolivian scorpions(Chelicerata: Scorpiones), with notes on their distribution. An updated checklist of the scorpions of Bo­ Iivia is presented. Twenty four species (three of them, with doubts) and one subspecies, belonging to the families Bothriuridae, Buthidae and luridae are listed. For each species, an abbreviated bibliographic reference and the com­ plete list of known localities are given. Brachistosternus ferrugineus (Thorell) and the Andean genus Orobothriurus Maury (Bothriuridae) are mentioned for the first time from Bolivia. Seven nominal species cited by previous authors are excluded from the Bolivian scorpiofauna, and the reasons for these exclu­ sions are discussed. This species is endemic to the upper level of the Somuncura plateau, a Patagonian island placed in the Monte Phytogeographic province. This is the third known endemic scorpion from this area. Bothriurus nendai n. sp. is closely related to the patagonicus group; however, several morphological characters separate B. nendai from the species of this group. New data on the scorpion species of the plateau are also provided. Key words: Scorpiones, Patagonia, Argentina, Somuncura, Bothriuridae, Bothriurus, endemism Introduction The Patagonian scorpion fauna has received little attention by taxonomists until recent years; however, in the last decade several papers have been published on this subject (Acosta 2003; Mattoni 2007; Ojanguren- Affilastro 2001, 2003, 2007; Ojanguren-Affilastro & Cheli 2009; Ojanguren-Affilastro & Roig-Alsina 2001). Most of the scorpions of this area belong to genus Bothriurus Peters 1861, with five described species: B. burmeisteri Kraepelin 1894, belonging to the burmeisteri group; B. patagonicus Maury 1969, B. sanctaecrucis Mattoni 2007, and B. ceii Ojanguren-Affilastro 2007, belonging to the patagonicus group (Mattoni 2007; Maury 1969; Ojanguren-Affilastro 2007); and B.

Brachistosternus cepedai n. sp. occurs in coastal dunes and is closely related to Brachistosternus (L.) sciosciae Ojanguren-Affilastro, 2002. On the other hand, Brachistosternus coquimbo n. sp occurs at high altitudes in the Andes mountain chain and is related to Brachistosternus (L.) montanus Roig Alsina, 1977, and to several Andean species from Argentina and Chile. Adaptative characters of the psammophilous Br. (L.) cepedai n. sp. are discussed. 39 scorpion species are now known from Chile, ten of them occur in the Coquimbo Region, being the region with the more diverse scorpion fauna in the country. Introduction: Bothriuridae has representatives in South America, Africa (southern part), Asia (India) and Australia, where they are found in temperate and subtropical habitats. One genus has recently been discovered in the Himalayas (Cercophonius). Members of this family are found in small burrows, under stones, in cracks and crevices, and in self-made burrows up to 40 cm deep. Methods: Information about taxonomical changes in the period 1998 - 2006 has been collected through intensive searching in major databases like Zoological Records, Biological Abstracts, Pubmed (Medline) and others. Another important source of information has been researchers around the world sending me new papers on scorpion taxonomy, or informing me about new changes. The combination of an anatomical study using methylene blue as the contrast medium together with a histological analysis using hematoxylin-eosin and Heindenhain´s iron hematoxylin techniques permitted the identkfication of a large number of nerves in B. bonariensis. Many of these are also present in a variety of other species of scorpions, belonging to distinct families of the order Scorpiones. Nev- ertheless, two pairs of nerves from B. bonariensis originating in the cheliceral ganglion, one pair of esophageal nerves and one pair of nerves from the aortic arch, appear to diverge from this basic orga- nization. They have not been previously described, nor have any equivalents been reported in research on other scorpion species, in which the current homological criteria have been employed. As most spiders and all scorpions are venomous and due to their mostly negative image in the public media, several governments are already considering introducing legislation to regulate the domestic care of potentially dangerous captive animals. We aimed to investigate the circumstances and effects of exposure to arachnids kept in captivity. Thus, we collected and analysed data from 335 reported bites and stings attributed to pet arachnids. Our data revealed that on average there were less than 20 recorded envenomations per year with ~90% preventable by due care. We also categorized the severity of the resulting symptoms and found that the vast majority of symptoms were either local (60.9%) or moderate (33.4%), 4.8% were asymptomatic, only 0.9% were severe and no fatalities were recorded. Based on our database of bite and sting reports, we performed a risk assessment for arachnid pet ownership and concluded that with the proper care arachnids can be safely kept as pets and pose a lower risk than many other recreational activities.
