ISBN: 1-84701-521-2. pp. 139-52. 5 Abstract This study interrogates both long and short written prose by a distinguished sample of emergent and established writers from Kenya as a microcosm of East Africa. The sample includes both novels and short stories published in English. The region produces literature that is both written and oral. It also produces literature in vernacular language, the regional lingua franca, Kiswahili beside English. The term contemporary has been used here to denote generally the written tradition of English expression in the turn of the century (c. 1991-2011). The authors under study include: M. G. Vassanji, Binyavanga Wainaina and Yvonne Adhiambo Owuor. The study conducts a critical interrogation of new works by these writers. These are: The In-Between World of Vikram Lall (2003), No New Land (1991) by Vassanji; Discovering Home (2002) by Wainaina and ‘Weight of Whispers’ (2003) by Owuor. We are interested in examining how ethnicity and gender as two major indexes of identity in East Africa today are treated in exemplary works of short and long prose. Specifically, how do these two indices, in the hands of the selected writers of note, contribute to the aesthetic and formal thematization, as well as treatment, of identity issues? The study emanates from the need to contribute to critical studies that trace the recent contours of literary writing across Africa in light of the call for appreciations of diversity within African identity discourses especially in the context of expanding ethnic and gender conflicts. Creative imagination is one of the pathways by which a people or culture presents itself to the world. It represents their internal and external environments. To study the sociology of literature is to contribute in the creation of awareness around a society and its vocal agents. This is our guiding assumption and it is rooted to the core of postcolonial studies as a discipline. The tendency to use or apply sociological parameters in the study of East African literature is well established. Owing to the multiracial and multicultural nature of the societies of the nation-states that make up the region, this is an almost natural phenomenon. These countries include Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Somalia, Sudan, Ethiopia, Rwanda and Burundi. The first three countries, from whence comes the majority of our sample are homes to indigenous African communities and immigrant communities from South Asia and the Arabian Peninsula as well as visible communities of European descent. It these three strands of cultural heritage that make the composite core of East African identity as a region. Naturally,

A close look at 1930s Kenya Luo women’s dance in the context of “dance history” raises questions about which dances matter, who counts as a dancer, and how dance is defined. When discursive practices are considered in light of multicultural demographic trends and globalisation the problem points toward a crisis of reason in western discourse about how historical origins and “the body” have been theorised: within a western philosophical tradition the body and experience are negated as a basis for theorising. Therefore, historical models and theories about race and gender often relate binary thinking whereby the body is theorised as text and history is understood as a linear narrative. An alternative theoretical model is established wherein dancers’ processes of embodying historical meaning provide one of five bases through which to theorise. The central research questions this study poses and attempts to answer are: how can I illuminate a view of dance that is transhistorical and transnational? How can I write about 1930s Luo women in a way that does not create a case study to exist outside of dance history? Research methods challenge historical materialist frameworks for discussions of the body and suggest insight can be gained into how historical narratives operate with coercive power—both in past and present—by examining how meaning is conceptualised and experienced.

    THE CHIMURENGA CHRONIC A future-forward, pan African newspaper BACKGROUND In which ways do people live their lives with joy and creativity and beauty, sometimes amidst suffering and violence, and sometimes perpendicular to it? How do people fashion routines and make sense of the world in the face of the temporariness or volatility that defines so many of the arrangements of social existence here? These questions loom over a contemporary Africa. Yet most knowledge produced on the continent remains heavily reliant on simplistic and rigid categories, the bulk of it unable to capture the complexities and ambivalences that inflect so much of contemporary quotidian life here. During 2011 Chimurenga produced a pilot issue of a fictional pan African newspaper. Titled, the Chimurenga Chronic, the project was published in collaboration with Nigeria’s Cassava Republic Press and Kenya’s Kwani Trust, and distributed across several African cities. An intervention in both time and space, it embraced the newspaper as the medium best capable of inhabiting, reproducing and interpreting political, social and cultural life in places where uncertainty and turbulence, unpredictability and multidirectional shifts are the forms taken, in many instances, by daily experience. Employing reportage, creative non-fiction, autobiography, satire and analysis “Better than The New Yorker,” to offer a detailed, vivid and richly textured engagement of everyday life, the Chronic told stories of a complicated ordinariness. Conserving the Intangible This paper addresses the task of conserving the intangible – in this case, the identity of a community. The setting is within national history and the national heritage; the task itself always as affirmation of Kenya’s pluralistic heritage. It records the steps taken by the Asian African community in Kenya in this regard. The experience may provide a template for other individual communities. The Asian Africans are originally from Asia’s Sub-continent (now India and Pakistan), settled in East Africa for over two hundred years. “Travelling individuals and cosmopolitan encounters”1 are part of what brought about the Asian African presence. References in texts, speech, records or debates refer to them variously as coolies, indentured labourers, Asiatics, Indians, Asians or South Asians, among other labels. But now, with the passing of these centuries, individuals and homes have become filled with a new social identity, simultaneously Asian and African – Asian African in fact.

It acknowledges that the production of cultural value in any kind of setting is not always just a social process, but it is also always politicised and leaning towards the prevailing social power. The prize-winning short stories are highly influenced or dependent on the material conditions of the stories’ production and consumption. The content is shaped by the prize, its requirements, rules, and regulations as well as the politics associated with the specific prize. As James English (2005) asserts, “[t]here is no evading the social and political freight of a global award at a time when global markets determine more and more the fate of local symbolic economies” (298).

    World Archaeology at the Pitt Rivers Museum: A Characterization edited by Dan Hicks and Alice Stevenson, Archaeopress 2013, pages 35-21 3 Kenyan Stone Age: the Louis Leakey Collection Ceri Shipton Access 3.1 Introduction Louis Seymour Bazett Leakey is considered to be the founding father of palaeoanthropology, and his donation of some 6,747 artefacts from several Kenyan sites to the Pitt Rivers Museum (PRM) make his one of the largest collections in the Museum. Leakey was passionate aboutopen human evolution and Africa, and was able to prove that the deep roots of human ancestry lay in his native east Africa. At Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania he excavated an extraordinary sequence of Pleistocene human evolution, discovering several hominin species and naming the earliest known human culture: the Oldowan. At Olorgesailie, Kenya, he excavated an Acheulean site that is still influential in our understanding of Lower Pleistocene human behaviour. On Rusinga Island in Lake Victoria, Kenya he found the Miocene ape ancestor Proconsul. He obtained funding to establish three of the most influential primatologists in their field, dubbed Leakey’s ‘ape women’; Jane Goodall, Dian Fossey and Birute Galdikas, who pioneered the study of chimpanzee, gorilla and orangutan behaviour respectively. His second wife Mary Leakey, whom he first hired as an artefact illustrator, went on to be a great researcher in her own right, surpassing Louis’ work with her own excavations at Olduvai Gorge. Mary and Louis’ son Richard followed his parents’ career path initially, discovering many of the most important hominin fossils including KNM WT 15000 (the Nariokotome boy, a near complete Homo ergaster skeleton), KNM WT 17000 (the type specimen for Paranthropus aethiopicus), and KNM ER 1470 (the type specimen for Homo rudolfensis with an extremely well preserved Archaeopressendocranium).

In 2014, she was selected as one of the most promising African writers for the Africa39 Anthology, a project of the Hay Festival. Since winning the Caine Prize in July, Chatto & Windus in the UK and Hogarth in the US have bought world rights to her debut novel The Old Drift. For the first time in the history of the Caine Prize, the winner shared her prize money with the other shortlisted writers. When India is reorganizing its global engagement as an emergent power, its dialogue with Indian Diaspora is its major foreign policy strategy. However, since its Diaspora is diverse- old (which went as indentured workers and traders), new (as in the west), high skilled (as in Europe and North America) and low skilled (as in the Persian Gulf), the potential role of its Diaspora as a partner in engagement of India is diverse. Indian Diaspora in East Africa is largely a business community and is an old Diaspora in the region. This Diaspora is African in its economic and political identity, through it still has cultural Indianness left. They are integrated African citizen, still they are like ‘heritage resources’ for the host and home countries. They are a ‘cultural capital’ in bilateral relations of India with East African countries. Though the experiences of Indian Diaspora and Indian policy in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania had been diverse, it is important to understand and asses their potential as a ‘heritage resource’ in bilateral relations of India and East African countries. The Diaspora is a non-governmental resource and organizes itself as a civil society. This programme intends to engage Indian think tanks and civil society to make them aware of these emerging engagements and understand its impact on India and the host societies.
