For larger garden plots, apply the same design principles and plant spacing, but increase the number of plants to fit your garden space. Cut-Flower Garden Design Considerations • Access paths. Provide adequate space between rows to comfortably access all plants in your cutting plot. Given the modest dimensions of our example, we allow a 12”-wide access path. A 24”-wide path is common for larger plantings. • Layout by crop height. Place taller plants such as amaranth and sunflowers at the back of the garden, on the north or northwest side, depending on the orientation of your plot. Place shorter plants such as calendula and ageratum at the front of the garden, on the south or southeast side. Ordering plant heights from tallest to shortest along a north-to-south axis will help prevent taller crops from shading out shorter ones. • Days to bloom. Use the number of days to bloom to calculate your planting dates by crop, so that your flower crops begin to bloom at relatively the same time. orF example; ageratum requires 80–100 days to bloom from seed whereas calendula requires about 55 days. Hence, you will want to seed your calendula about 50 days after you seed ageratum to achieve a similar bloom time for mixed bouquets. • Direct-seeding and transplanting. Plan your space to accommodate both direct-seeded and transplanted crops. For efficiency, it may be useful to designate one area of your plot for direct- seeding and another for transplanting. In our example, we designated the easternmost end of our garden plot to direct-seeded crops. • Proportion. All the varieties in our Easy Cut-Flower Garden Set are cut-and-come-again flowers and should provide a season of blooms if well maintained. Consider the proportion of each type of flower you will want to use in your bouquets when planning your garden. As a general rule of thumb, focal flowers and fillers make up 80% of most bouquets, while spikes and accent flowers make up about 10–20%, depending on the design. #BloomWithJohnnys 955 Benton Ave., Winslow, ME 04901 U.S.A. | Johnnyseeds.com | 1 - 8 7 7 - 5 6 4 - 6 6 9 7 .
