Middle Ages 500-1000 1 3 The Dark Age Church Period of Barbarian Invasions AD 500—1000 Introduction With the endorsement of the Emperor and obligatory church membership for all Roman citizens across the empire, Roman Christianity continued to change the nature of the Church, in stead of visa versa. The humble beginnings were soon forgotten in the luxurious halls and civil power of the highest courts and assemblies of the known world. Who needs spiritual power when you can have civil power? The transition from being the persecuted to the persecutor, from the powerless to the powerful with Imperial and divine authority brought with it the inevitable seeds of corruption. Some say that Christianity won the known world in the first five centuries, but a closer look may reveal that the world had won Christianity as well, and that, in much less time. The year 476 usually marks the end of the Christian Roman Empire in the West.

The Cradle of the Renaissance: The Italian City-States Renaissance Italy was distinguished by the large number and political autonomy of its thriving city-states, the development of which can be divided into two distinct phases: the republicanism phase of the eleventh century and the principality phase of the fourteenth century. A. The Renaissance Republics: Florence and Venice In contrast to the majority of the Italian city-states, Florence and Venice held steadfastly to the traditions of republicanism under the patriciate system of political and artistic influence by a few great families. 1. Florence Under the Medici The amazingly wealthy banker Cosimo de' Medici emerged as the greatest of the Renaissance patrons. Seizing Florentine political power in 1434, Cosimo enforced a long period of unprecedented peace in which the arts could flourish. Always at the center of Florence's political affairs, Cosimo nevertheless rarely held formal office and shrewdly preferred to leverage influence behind the scenes. 2. Venice, the Cosmopolitan Republic Venice, the first European power to control colonies abroad, conquered a number of ports along the Geek coast. The resulting influx of exotic goods transformed Venice into a giant in the economics of the region and cosmopolitan in its social scope. Defined primarily by its social stability, the Venetian city- state became (and still is) the longest surviving republic in history at roughly five hundred years of independent affluence. B. Princes and Courtiers The ideals of the Renaissance, though created within the republican city-states, soon spread to the principalities ruled by one man (the prince).

The French word renaissance is translated as “rebirth” and is described by many as one of the most significant intellectual movements of our history. Whereas the Baroque period is described by many as a time of intense drama, tension, exuberance, and grandeur in art. By comparing and contrasting the works made in this period students gain a greater sense of the history of European art and the great minds behind it. Many notable artists, musicians, scientists, and writers emerged from this period that are still relished and discussed today. Artists and great thinkers such as Leonardo Da Vinci, Michaelangelo Meisi da Caravaggio, Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni, Dante Alighieri, Johann Sebastian Bach, and Galileo Galilei were working in their respective fields creating beautiful and innovative works. Many of these permanent collection works were created in the traditional fashion of egg tempera and oil painting which the students will get an opportunity to try in our studio.

They introduce the new romantic spirit into melodrama and establish a tighter link between words and music. Their style is characterised by greater attention to the psychology of the different characters. 1835 - 1837 Italy Reforms And Social Changes For the first time, a cholera epidemic hits Italy, killing more than 140,000 (26,000 in Palermo and 19,600 in Naples). Its causes remain unknown until the 1880s. Its spread is favoured by poor sanitation in urban centres. Cholera epidemics hit poor people especially and often occasion social unrest. 1837 - 1840 Italy Great Inventions Of The 19th Century Naples and Turin are the first Italian towns to have gas street lightning. 1839 Italy Great Inventions Of The 19th Century First Italian railway line (Napoli–Portici, 8 km). In the following years, other railway lines are inaugurated in other Italian states, e.g. Milano–Monza (1840), Pisa- Livorno (1844), Padova–Venezia (1846), Torino–Moncalieri (1848). Political fragmentation is an obstacle to the construction of long railway lines. 1842 Italy Travelling A seaside hostel is opened in Viareggio (Tuscany) for the treatment of children affected by tuberculosis (the first of its kind in Italy). In Tuscany, experiments of “marine therapy” for children started in the 1820s. By 1882, 21 seaside hostels for medical purposes are active in Italy.

												  The Legacy of the Roman Empire and the Middle Ages in the West TheThe Legacy of the Roman Empire and the Middle Ages in the West The Roman Empire reigned from 27 BCE to 476 CE throughout the Mediterranean world, including parts of Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. The fall of the Roman Empire in the West in 476 CE marked the end of the period of classical antiquity and ushered in a new era in world history. Three civilizations emerged as successors to the Romans in the Mediterranean world: the Byzantine Empire (in many ways a continuation of the Eastern Roman Empire), and the civilizations of Islam and Western Europe. These three civilizations would become rivals and adversaries over the course of the succeeding centuries. They developed distinct religious, cultural, social, political, and linguistic characteristics that shaped the path each civilization would take throughout the course of the Middle Ages and beyond. The Middle Ages in European history refers to the period spanning the fifth through the fifteenth century. The fall of the Western Roman Empire typically represents the beginning of the Middle Ages. Scholars divide the Middle Ages into three eras: the Early Middle Ages (400–1000), the High Middle Ages (1000–1300), and the Late Middle Ages (1300–1500). The Renaissance and the Age of Discovery traditionally mark the end of the Middle Ages and the beginning of the early modern period in European history. The legacy of the Roman Empire, and the division of its territory into three separate civilizations, impacted the course of world history and continues to influence the development of each region to this day.

SETTING THE STAGE At the turn of the century between the 1200s and 1300s, church and state seemed in good shape, but trouble was brewing. The Church seemed to be thriving. Ideals of fuller political representation seemed to be developing in France and England. However, the 1300s were filled with disasters, both natural and manmade. By the end of the century, the medieval way of life was beginning to disappear. A Church Divided At the beginning of the 1300s, the papacy seemed in some ways still strong. Soon, however, both pope and Church were in desperate trouble. Pope and King Collide The pope in 1300 was an able but stubborn Italian. Pope Boniface VIII attempted to enforce papal authority on kings as previous popes had. When King Philip IV of France asserted his authority over French bishops, Boniface responded with a papal bull (an official document issued by the pope). It stated, “We declare, state, and define that subjection to the Roman Vocabulary Pontiff is absolutely necessary for the salvation of every Pontiff: the pope. human creature.” In short, kings must always obey popes.
