University of Florida Thesis Or Dissertation Formatting THE BRONY CULTURE STUDY: UNDERSTANDING THE NEEDS AND VIEWS OF ADULT FANS OF MY LITTLE PONY: FRIENDSHIP IS MAGIC By JESSICA A. MARSH A THESIS PRESENTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS IN MASS COMMUNICATION UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA 2016 © 2016 Jessica A. Marsh To my family, friends, and professors who have supported, encouraged, and challenged me both in this process and throughout life ACKNOWLEDGMENTS First and foremost, this thesis would not have been possible if it weren’t for the fans of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic who eagerly came forth to participate in this study. I am forever grateful to you all for your participation and the insight you provided into the fandom and your experiences. Thank you. I’d also like to thank the members of my thesis committee. You were quick to see the research potential and merit in studying a fandom such as the Bronies and gave me the permission and encouragement to do so. I’d like to thank my parents, my aunt Helena, and my grandmother for encouraging me early on to follow my dreams, do that which makes me happy, and instilling in me a hunger for learning from books as well as people. I am blessed to have such people in my life. Thank you to my significant other, Jason Andrews, for your love, support, and encouragement through this project and every project I take on. Without the love of my family and friends I would not be who I am today. Thank you all for the parts you play. 4 TABLE OF CONTENTS page ACKNOWLEDGMENTS .................................................................................................. 4 LIST OF TABLES ............................................................................................................ 7 LIST OF FIGURES .......................................................................................................... 8 LIST OF ABBREVIATIONS ............................................................................................. 9 ABSTRACT ................................................................................................................... 10 CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION .................................................................................................... 12 Purpose .................................................................................................................. 14 Research Questions ............................................................................................... 15 2 LITERATURE REVIEW .......................................................................................... 17 Fans and Fandoms: An Overview ........................................................................... 18 A Brief History of Fan Studies .......................................................................... 18 Unpacking the Word “Fan” ............................................................................... 19 Technology: Changing Fan Practices and Fan Experiences ............................ 24 My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic ........................................................................ 26 Bronies .................................................................................................................... 33 A Fandom Is Born ............................................................................................ 33 Who Are the Bronies? Marsh May 2016 Chair: Bernell Tripp Major: Mass Communication In 2010, Hasbro’s iconic My Little Pony brand received a new look when the Hub network debuted the children’s cartoon My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. While the show became popular among its target demographic, girls under the age of ten, upon its airing it quickly developed a unique and unexpected audience—that of adult males. These adult fans, known as “Bronies,” watch My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, create fan art, cosplay, attend conventions, and engage with one another through various online forums. In this qualitative study, semi-structured, synchronous interviews were conducted with both adult male and female fans of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic in attempts to understand three aspects of being a fan. This study sought to understand first, the relationship between participants and the show by focusing on why participants like watching My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic and how the show has affected them. Second, the study sought to discover the relationship participants have with the fandom, especially why they felt the need to join the fandom and what pleasures and meaningful experiences do they gain from participating. The study also sought to identify the 10 experiences participants have had with those outside

  • An Integrated Media Campaign for Hasbro Studios
An Integrated Media Campaign for Hasbro Studios Richard Rodriguez Integrated Communication Hawaii Pacific University November 23, 2015 Executive Summary MY LITTLE PONY is a brand introduced by Hasbro in 1983 targeted at girls age 4-9. Over the years it has established itself as a leading brand for the company, promoted through numerous animated TV series, home video releases and a theatrical film. In the late 2000s Hasbro hired animation producer Lauren Faust, whose credits include The Powerpuff Girls, Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends and Super Best Friends Forever, to re-imagine MLP for a new generation of fans. The result was the TV series MY LITTLE PONY: FRIENDSHIP IS MAGIC, which premiered in 2010 and became a surprise runaway hit and fan culture phenomenon. Faust’s contributions have made FIM the most successful MLP franchise in the brand’s history and the company’s leading brand overall for the past six years. The life cycle of the current MLP franchise is nearing its end. To ensure the brand’s viability against newer competing brands, the company is taking the best values of FIM and the most beloved characters from its entire history to develop the next generation of MLP, to be known as MY LITTLE PONY: TWO OF A KIND. Just as Hasbro Studios partners with creative stewards to re-imagine, revision and re-ignite its brands as TV and film franchises, so it has partnered with Honolulu public relations firm Newport Muse Hawaii to develop an integrated campaign to introduce TWO OF A KIND to the diverse MLP audience and continue the brand’s commercial and critical success.

  • Top Ten Worst MLP:Fim Episodes
Top Ten Worst MLP:FiM Episodes As much as I am in love with My Little Pony Friendship is Magic, I feel that even in my previous reviews of episodes, I’ve become very critical to many episodes, calling them bad to worse, and focusing a lot on the negative side of the show. However now, I’m going to be doing a top ten best list to compliment this list and balance out the hate with some compliments. I’m also going to be including the movies as “episodes”, and counting two-part episodes as a single episode. Now as of the reasoning behind my choices, I’m going to be weighing things a bit differently, talking more about morals, pacing, enjoy ability and character handling and less about animation, songs, or plot. Also, since everyone has their own opinions on what they like and what they don’t, not everything on this list will apply to you, seeing as a few points including enjoy ability will be a bit biased on the Top Ten Best List as well as this one. Either way lets tick off the entire fandom and dive right into this! Tenth Place: Dragon Quest Kicking off our list is a poorly played re-make of a G1 episode in which Spike decides to go off and learn what it’s like to be a “Real Dragon” and ends up learning that dragons are, as a collective, just a bunch of mean, dishonest, violent bullies who want to peer pressure Spike into becoming a bully like them.

Volume 22• Number 4 • April 2013 This issue published online only New neighborhood market gets two thumbs up from Young D.C. Damali Hall and Peter Berg Young D.C. Glen’s Garden Market opened Sunday April 14, 2013. YDC caught up with co-founder Danielle Vogel and chef Sean Sullivan on Friday April 19. After working on Capitol Hill on a doomed climate change bill, Vogel decided to open up a store that would bring about change with every bite. Sean Sullivan joined her to create Glen’s Garden Market, named for Vogel’s late father. Glen’s Garden Market is supplied with produce, groceries and meat from 300 different vendors. While Vogel and Sullivan plan to venture out further, they will only look for vendors in the Chesapeake Watershed states: Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland, Virginia, New York, Delaware and D.C. The store offers a welcoming, open atmosphere and the music is really great. As “I Just Haven’t Met You Yet” by Michael Bublé floated from the speak- ers, YDC decided that we’d met a great new business. This neighborhood store is well organized and things are set out on tables for easy access. The labeling is also clear and informative. The produce is arranged so everything is within arm’s length. Foods that go well together, such as salsa and chips, and foods that are in the same food group, such as dairy products, are located near one another. There is a deli area and a freezer aisle. There are no bulky carts to crowd the space; instead, the market provides environmentally friendly shopping bags.

You didn’t help enough to make it into the acknowledgements, but everything I do is for you. 4 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I want to thank the educators who guided and influenced me along the way. In particular, Elaine McDuff and Rachel Kraus, both of whom made me the sociologist I am today. I admire both so much and truly would not be where I am without them. I must also mention Melinda Messineo, in whose cultural sociology class I came up with the idea of studying Bronies, and Jack Spencer, the first person to suggest that it might be an interesting dissertation topic. And, of course, my committee members, Linda Renzulli, Rachel Einwohner, Carolyn Perrucci, and Jo Reger did so much to help shape this dissertation. Linda especially stepped in at a critical time and did so much to see me through to the end. This dissertation would not have been possible without the help and support of Preethi Krishnan, Vasundhara Kaul, and Lori Lundell, who were there with me through the best and worst of graduate school.

1 The Taming of the Bronies: Animals, Autism and Fandom as Therapeutic Performance Maria Pramaggiore, Maynooth University Abstract: In defining and defending the Brony fandom, scholars and journalists emphasise the way these primarily adult male fans of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic challenge traditional gender norms. These accounts fail to examine the significance of the horse to the Bronies’ bid for non-normative masculinities. This article focuses on the implicitly therapeutic function of the animated equine, reading the fandom’s discourse about itself in two documentaries within the context of a contemporary (and often antifeminist) rhetoric that links adolescent masculinity to forms of disability that are ameliorated through Equine Assisted Therapy. This therapeutic resonance—based on the characteristic movement of horses—is situated within a broader history of cinema and visual culture in which horses have typically been recruited as vehicles of physical and psychic transport. The emergence of the Brony fandom in 2011 in the wake of toy and game manufacturer Hasbro’s 2010 reboot of the My Pretty Pony (1981)/My Little Pony (1983) franchise from the 1980s captured the attention of journalists and scholars alike. Numerous articles and essays explore the subversive potential of these adult male fans of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic (2010–), hereafter MLP:FiM, an animated toy-based children’s series created by Lauren Faust, who previously worked on Powerpuff Girls (1998–2005). The programme is organised around a group of characters known as “the Mane Six” who are hybrid, anthropomorphic, talking ponygirls. The Brony subculture of adolescent boys and adult men developed within the online environment of the “Comics & Cartoons” discussion board of 4chan, an image-board site established in 2003 by 15-year-old Christopher Poole.

  • Girl Loses Her Virginity at Bronycon 2016 & Other Stories
Girl loses her virginity at BronyCon 2016 & other stories This year I attended BronyCon for the first time in order to interview people about their love for My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. Some of the people I spoke to really love MLP, while others managed to find love between the sheets of a cheap Baltimore hotel. All is fair in love and bronydom and below I have compiled a few interesting stories from people I spoke to during my three days at BronyCon (July 8 – 10). The Girl Who Lost Her Virginity at BronyCon 2016 One girl I spoke to at BronyCon - 19 years of age wearing a wonky tiara and pink wig as an aspiring Pinkie Pie – told me on the Sunday that on Saturday night she slept with a man for the first time. The man, described as being 'older than [her] but not too old for it to be weird', met her on the Friday and complimented her on her costume. They encountered one another again on the Saturday and spent most of the day hanging around with each other. “We both went to BronyCon with friends so it's weird in a way that we spent most of the time together,” she said. “He was a good looking guy and stood out because he had sunglasses on his head, even indoors.” After spending Saturday together the two went off-site for the evening, managing to find a store and purchase some alcohol and hot pockets which they took back to the room in the Baltimore hotel the fellow was staying at.
